Possible candidates include Braid’s deputies, Jeff Freeland and Katie Bailey, with Vince Haley also considered a dark horse due to his experience working under Stephen Miller and with Newt Gingrich.Sources suggest Trump is likely to choose someone familiar with Capitol Hill or internal to the White House, as the role is not attractive to private sector candidates and involves dealing with complex issues like impeachment and oversight investigations.

The White House has not officially commented, but insiders believe the new appointee will probably be an internal candidate because of the nature of the job and recent staffing trends. Braid and his deputy Blair have played key roles in passing legislation and negotiating with Congress, including ending government shutdowns. Braid, who previously staffed Republican Congress members and held positions with JD Vance, plans to leave his post in September, ahead of the midterms, a move aligned with past timing strategies for staff departures. Despite speculation, many do not see Braid’s departure as linked to any 2028 presidential ambitions; rather, it appears to be part of his planned midterm transition.

President Donald Trump is not expected to look far when selecting a replacement for outgoing White House Legislative Affairs Director James Braid.

Sources close to the president told the Washington Examiner that there are “a lot” of “qualified” staffers already working in the White House legislative shop who could be slotted in immediately to fill Braid’s shoes.

Recommended Stories

Trump eyes White House insiders to replace outgoing legislative affairs chief

Vance brings in $5 million in Hamptons fundraising event: Report

James Braid to leave role as White House liaison to Congress

Three sources close to the White House specifically floated Braid’s deputy director, Jeff Freeland, as a replacement.
