The event is expected to attract about 140,000 spectators daily, with race cars reaching speeds over 200 mph along downtown streets near key landmarks such as the Capitol and Washington Monument. The main race on Sunday at 1 p.m. will be broadcast nationally on Fox,and free tickets are fully booked.

Traffic disruptions are anticipated, with the Metropolitan Police Department implementing extensive street closures from December 12th to September 15th, affecting access to several buildings including the Ronald Reagan Building and waldorf Astoria. Alternative routes and restricted areas are in place, encouraging spectators to use public transportation; Metro will add services and staffing. Access to Smithsonian museums within the restricted zones is limited to ticket holders on race days.

The closures will also impact residents and students, notably those at Georgetown University, who are advised to move in after the race weekend. The impact of the event extends beyond race days,as city officials work to dismantle the race circuit. This event continues the series of disruptions caused by America 250 festivities, which are expected to draw large crowds in celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Washington, D.C., is bracing for a weekend of major road closures, security restrictions, and heightened law enforcement presence as the Freedom 250 Grand Prix takes over some of Washington’s busiest streets.

The event, organized by the White House as part of the America 250 celebrations, is expected to draw roughly 140,000 spectators each day on Saturday, Aug. 22, and Sunday, Aug. 23. For access to the Waldorf Astoria, drivers will be directed south on 11th Street from E Street, with vehicles permitted to cross Pennsylvania Avenue to reach the hotel. Officials said they will make every effort to accommodate access to parking garages and loading docks within restricted areas when public safety conditions allow.
