On Jan. 24, 2023, Lindsay Clancy asked her husband Patrick to go out to run errands. She then strangled 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan with exercise bands. She then tried to strangle herself but failed to kill herself; she is now paralyzed from the waist down due to spinal cord injuries from the attempt.<\/p>\n<p>The defense claims that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and depression along with bipolar disorder, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/lindsay-clancy-was-begging-help-killing-children-former-mother-law-tes-rcna593290\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC News<\/a>. In addition, they allege these conditions were incorrectly treated by medical professionals who gave her what the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/17\/us-news\/lindsay-clancys-stricken-mom-testifies-about-disturbing-moment-daughter-confessed-her-darkest-inner-thoughts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a> described as \u201ca revolving door of powerful psychiatric medications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJurors have heard testimony that Lindsay was given 30 prescriptions for 13 drugs by a handful of providers in the four months leading to the killings. She also did a five-day stint in a mental institution weeks before because of having intrusive suicidal thoughts,\u201d the Post reported.<\/p>\n<p>Clancy has pleaded not guilty to murder by reason of insanity.<\/p>\n<p>Under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/doc\/9200-lack-of-criminal-responsibility\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Massachusetts law<\/a>, the burden of proof that an individual was criminally responsible for their actions in the case of an insanity plea lies with the prosecution, and it must either prove that there was no \u201cmental disease or defect at the time of the alleged offense\u201d or that \u201ceven if the defendant suffered from a mental disease or defect at the time of the alleged offense, the defendant nonetheless retained the substantial capacity to appreciate the wrongfulness or criminality of their conduct and to conform their conduct to the requirements of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In testimony for the defense on Monday, Paula Musgrove said that Lindsay had \u201ctold us that she had thoughts of harming the children\u201d sometime in December of 2022, roughly one month before the murders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember her being very nervous,\u201d she said of the discussion. \u201cI remember Pat asking her if she felt like she couldn\u2019t be alone with the children, and she said, \u2018No.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said she wasn\u2019t concerned for the safety of the children \u201cbecause I was there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, she testified that her daughter\u2019s mental health began deteriorating in the four months prior to the murders, and she asked her mother to help her out \u2014 including, in one case, coming to sleep with her.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 20, 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/police-recording-captures-new-disturbing-details-mother-found-night-children-murdered\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lindsay<\/a> texted her mother and asked her to \u201cplease come up and stay with me for a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really sick. Something is wrong. I have horrible insomnia all night and I just don\u2019t know how I\u2019m going to get through the day,\u201d Lindsay wrote in the text.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started taking medicine my doctor prescribed for anxiety and I think it\u2019s made things worse. It\u2019s just really scared and I don\u2019t want to be alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mother drove up from Connecticut and was there by late morning, according to the texts. She told the jury that she was \u201cback and forth so many times\u201d she couldn\u2019t keep track of how often she was at the house.<\/p>\n<p>She added that Lindsay was \u201ca very loving mother,\u201d but that the pharmaceutical regimen her daughter was being given was causing serious harm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLindsay had lost a lot of weight, had become paranoid about different things that really weren\u2019t logical,\u201d Musgrove testified. \u201cShe would mention this wasn\u2019t her mind. \u2018This isn\u2019t me. I have never been like this before,\u2019 and I would agree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said she couldn\u2019t remember anything. The medication was destroying her mind, and it wasn\u2019t her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love my grandchildren with all my heart, and you will never know what it is like to love a grandchild until you become a grandmother,\u201d a visibly distraught Musgrove told the court.<\/p>\n<p>While the case has kicked off a social media discussion about the effects of postpartum depression and psychosis, it\u2019s also lent itself to theories of Patrick Clancy\u2019s culpability that even the defense admits aren\u2019t accurate.<\/p>\n<p>Videos like this, which blame Patrick Clancy for the murders, have been rife on TikTok, Instagram, and X.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Female TikToker takes a break from work to film a video in front of a bathroom stall, explaining that Lindsay Clancy jumped from her window because her husband barricaded her in the room.<\/p>\n<p>Her evidence? You were not honored nor protected. All we see in the proceedings are his glaring weaknesses and callousness,\u201d one donor wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDear Lindsay, the system and patriarchy failed you. The matriarchy will make sure you\u2019re heard,\u201d another donor\u2019s remark read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stand with Lindsay. You deserved compassion, understanding, and support when you needed it most. The system failed you, but this is not the end. I believe the truth will prevail, and I stand with you and your family,\u201d a third donor remarked.<\/p>\n<p>If Clancy is convicted, she could face life in prison without the possibility of parole.
