The DOJ stated that Morens and two co-conspirators conspired during the COVID pandemic to defraud the U.S. by attempting to restore a terminated grant linked to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which had been funding gain-of-function research on bat coronaviruses. Evidence suggests that morens and his co-conspirators used personal email accounts to hide communications from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/website-will-allow-parents-and-teachers-to-expose-classroom-radicalism\/\" title=\"Website Will Allow Parents and Teachers to Expose Classroom Radicalism\">public records requests<\/a>, and Morens admitted to colluding with a co-conspirator to influence NIH funding and to receive illegal gifts, such as wine, in exchange for scientific favors. Morens faces up to five years in prison, and the case underscores concerns about the suppression of data related to coronavirus research and the origins of the pandemic.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In a major step toward accountability, a senior advisor to Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/anthony-fauci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anthony Fauci<\/a> pled guilty on Tuesday to partaking in a \u201cscheme\u201d to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >dodge open records requests related<\/a> to coronavirus research grants. <\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-md\/pr\/former-senior-niaid-official-pleads-guilty-charges-connected-concealing-federal-records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Justice<\/a>, Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/david-morens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David Morens<\/a> pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge \u201cto commit offenses and to defraud the United States.\u201d Morens was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/04\/28\/doj-indicts-faucis-right-hand-man-for-allegedly-circumventing-open-records-requests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">indicted<\/a> by federal prosecutors in April and previously served as a senior advisor to Fauci \u2014 the now-former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases \u2014 from 2006-2022. <\/p>\n<p>In summarizing the guilty plea, the DOJ said that Morens and two co-conspirators \u201cconspired\u201d during the Covid outbreak to defraud America after the National Institutes of Health (NIH) \u201cterminated the grant, <em>Understanding the Risk of Bat Coronavirus Emergence<\/em>, based on allegations\u201d that the Covid-19 virus originated from the Wuhan Institute of Virology in Wuhan, China. The agency noted that the Fauci-led NIAID \u201cawarded the grant to Company 1 and Co-Conspirator 1, who made a subaward to the WIV.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HansMahncke\/status\/2049130566264496456?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">observers<\/a> have suggested that Co-Conspirator 1 is former EcoHealth Alliance President <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/peter-daszak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peter Daszak<\/a>. As Federalist Senior Contributor Helen Raleigh previously <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/02\/28\/fauci-and-ecohealths-peter-daszak-silenced-lab-leak-conspiracy-theory-congress-shouldnt-let-them-forget-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, from 2014-2020, EcoHealth sent \u201cmore than half a million dollars\u2019 worth of U.S. government grants, including those from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with Anthony Fauci\u2019s approval, to the Wuhan Institute of Virology to conduct gain-of-function research on bat coronaviruses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similar to Fauci, Daszak previously <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/02\/5-takeaways-from-peter-daszaks-testimony-on-u-s-funded-coronavirus-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dismissed<\/a> the lab leak theory as a \u201cconspiracy theor[y].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Health and Human Services <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/release\/breaking-hhs-formally-debars-ecohealth-alliance-dr-peter-daszak-after-covid-select-reveals-pandemic-era-wrongdoing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">formally cut off federal funding and debarred<\/a> EcoHealth and Daszak last year for five years over the organization\u2019s reckless coronavirus research.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[RELATED:[RELATED:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/02\/5-takeaways-from-peter-daszaks-testimony-on-u-s-funded-coronavirus-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5 Takeaways From Peter Daszak\u2019s Testimony On U.S.-Funded Coronavirus Research<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The DOJ noted that Morens and Co-Conspirator 2 \u201cpledged\u201d to assist Co-Conspirator 1 with getting the bat coronavirus grant restored and to squash the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/utm_sourcerssutm_mediumrssutm_campaignfauci-gave-10-speeches-and-interviews-in-2026-before-refusing-to-testify-to-congress\/\" title=\"... Made 10 Media Appearances Before Refusing To Testify\">credible lab leak theory<\/a>. The agency said that Morens and his co-conspirators \u201cagreed in writing to intentionally hide their communications from public view by corresponding using Morens\u2019s personal Gmail account, rather than his official NIH email account,\u201d in anticipation that their communications would be subject to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe co-conspirators used Morens\u2019s personal Gmail account to exchange non-public NIH information; correspond about their efforts to influence NIH to fund Company 1; exchange edits to drafts of letters addressed to NIH leadership for Company 1 and Co-Conspirator 1; and \u2018back-channel\u2019 information to Senior NIAID Official 1,\u201d the DOJ presser reads. \u201cAccording to court documents, each of these matters fell within Morens\u2019s role as senior advisor and constituted federal records that needed to be created, maintained, and exchanged on government systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In pleading guilty, Morens also admitted to colluding with Co-Conspirator 1 to \u201cto pay illegal gratuities.\u201d This includes Co-Conspirator 1 gifting Morens wine for his \u201cbehind-the-scenes shenanigans,\u201d and arranging for it to be delivered to Morens\u2019 residence. Per the DOJ, \u201cMorens then allegedly identified an official act that he could perform to \u2018deserve\u2019 the gift, which was to author a scientific commentary in a prominent medical journal advocating that COVID-19 had natural origins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morens\u2019 guilty plea seemingly confirms the veracity of <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/30\/records-suggest-top-nih-official-squashed-lab-leak-theory-for-fauci-used-personal-email-to-hide-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">communications<\/a> previously unearthed by congressional Republicans. Those documents appeared to show Morens corresponding with Daszak about evading open records requests. <\/p>\n<p>In one Sept. 9, 2021, email to several colleagues and Daszak, for example, Morens reportedly wrote, \u201cI try to always communicate over gmail because my NIH email is FOIA\u2019d constantly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday my gmail was hacked, probably by these [gain-of-function] -ssholes, and until IT can get it fixed I may have to occasionally email from my NIH account,\u201d Morens wrote. \u201cDon\u2019t worry, just send to any of my addresses and I will delete anything I don\u2019t want to see in the New York Times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The unearthed emails also <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/30\/records-suggest-top-nih-official-squashed-lab-leak-theory-for-fauci-used-personal-email-to-hide-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suggested<\/a> that Fauci had instructed Morens to speak with legacy media in an apparent effort to downplay the lab leak theory. President Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/biden-pardons-mark-milley-anthony-fauci-j6-committee-members\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">granted<\/a> Fauci a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/doj-indicts-faucis-right-hand-man-for-allegedly-circumventing-open-records-requests\/\" title=\"DOJ Indicts ...&#039;s Right...Hand For Allegedly Dodging FOIA\">sweeping pre-emptive pardon hours<\/a> before leaving office.<\/p>\n<p>Morens is facing a maximum of five years in prison on the conspiracy charge, with a federal judge expected to determine his sentence at a later date.
