The result, Montgomery estimated, could leave the U.S. military down two carrier groups for \u201cmore than 18 months\u201d in the Indo-Pacific.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is a risk as it sends a weak deterrence message to China and does not assure America\u2019s allies and partners in the Pacific,\u201d he explained, noting that the U.S. military can maintain its commitment to Iran \u201cfor another 12 months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere will be a significant readiness bill to pay in 2-3 years, resulting in extremely low deployment and readiness rates,\u201d Montgomery added. \u201cAgain, this is a problem for deterring China or assuring allies and partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guy Snodgrass, a former aide to ex-Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, similarly warned that the carrier deployment could signal broader U.S. military shortfalls to adversaries. Snodgrass, who was based on the <em>Washington<\/em> while deployed to Japan, specifically noted the carrier group\u2019s role as a deterrent to Chinese, North Korean, and Russian threats to the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He argued that those nations would view moving the carrier to the Middle East, coupled with depleted American munitions stockpiles, \u201cas one more signal that there\u2019s a shortfall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond the immediate strain on military assets, Snodgrass said America\u2019s inability to rapidly end the war with Iran could undermine adversaries\u2019 perceptions of the U.S. military.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAmerica may not be the 10-foot-tall giant that other nations have assumed us to be, and it\u2019s a similar dynamic we saw play out with Russia against Ukraine. Everyone thought Russia was going to roll right over Ukraine, and they didn\u2019t,\u201d he explained. \u201cThat\u2019s the danger of what\u2019s happened now with this decision with the Iran war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others argue the carrier deployments themselves are less consequential, even as the Iran war exposes broader vulnerabilities China could exploit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lyle Goldstein, the director of Defense Priorities\u2019s Asia Program and former professor at the U.S. Naval War College, said the Iran conflict doesn\u2019t substantively alter the Indo-Pacific calculus, given how outgunned the United States already was in the theater.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that some war gamers \u201chave long believed that the carrier is really not of much concern to China,\u201d as \u201cChina has for decades worked on how to destroy it.\u201d Goldstein cited a 2023 Center for Strategic and International Studies war game that showed two U.S. carrier groups being destroyed within the first 10 days of a potential hot war with China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, he claimed that the U.S. Navy, even before the start of the Iran war, simply did not have the firepower to sink a Chinese fleet totaling between 5,000 to 10,000 ships that experts see Beijing mobilizing in the event of an invasion of Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, Goldstein raised concerns that the Iran war is \u201crevealing\u201d to China an American pattern of \u201cpoor decision-making, poor planning, vulnerability of bases, and an overall lack of munitions,\u201d on top of \u201ca lot of angst in the American body politic.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn other words, we are divided, and they know it. And so, I am worried that this poses an ever-increasing temptation,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not a new issue, but the huge amount of intelligence assets that have been put at Ukraine for five years and now also at Iran \u2014 those are people, those are intelligence analysts that are staring all day at patches of Eastern Europe and the Middle East who are not staring at the Chinese coast. So, if I were a Chinese planner, it\u2019s been a good five years.
