Recently, he campaigned in Iowa for Rep. Zach Nunn adn attended the Iowa State Fair, events that are often seen as grooming grounds for presidential contenders. Hegseth’s appearances have raised questions within Republican circles about whether he is positioning himself for wider political ambitions beyond his current pentagon role, such as a presidential run or statewide office.

While the Pentagon claims Hegseth’s Iowa trip was solely for a veteran fundraising event and denies any presidential aspirations, his background as a former Fox News host and military service-serving in the Army National Guard with decorations-bolsters his political profile. supporters, including evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats, view him as a principled leader with significant potential, especially among Iowa voters.

However, his primary focus remains on his duties at the Pentagon, with some experts cautioning against premature political pursuits that could conflict with his role, especially given ongoing military engagements like the Iran conflict. Additionally, possible future campaigns face logistical hurdles, such as Tennessee’s political rules and the requirement for recent voting history.

Other members of the Trump administration, like Robert F. Kennedy jr. and JD Vance, are also active in Iowa, highlighting the state’s importance in shaping potential presidential bids. Political analysts suggest that the outcome of the November midterms will considerably influence Hegseth’s prospects, with some advising him to prioritize his current responsibilities. Hegseth’s political trajectory remains uncertain, with various factors-such as election results, military developments, and internal party dynamics-potentially affecting his next move.

War Secretary Pete Hegseth‘s increasing presence on the 2026 campaign trail is sparking rumors about his political future.

Hegseth was in Iowa on Monday to campaign for Rep. Zach Nunn (R-IA), a two-term lawmaker representing a battleground district House Republicans must win if they hope to keep the majority. But in Iowa, whose caucuses have long started the Republican presidential nominating process, visits from nationally prominent political figures inevitably invite speculation about ambitions extending beyond the midterms.

Mack Shelley, a political scientist at Iowa State University, said the Iowa State Fair is “a perfect sort of grooming opportunity” for Hegseth.

“Hegseth’s resume resonates. He’s got a very strong media presence, particularly in Fox News territory,” Shelley added.

Hegseth’s military background could also bolster his political credentials. He served in the Army National Guard, received two Bronze Star medals, and participated in several active-duty deployments.

Yet, Hegseth’s tenure at the Pentagon could ultimately matter far more to his political future than any campaign appearance in Iowa. The outcome of the Iran war, in particular, could prove consequential.

The war “may or may not turn out in a positive way for him or the administration in general. Right now, I think it’s fair to characterize it as a stalemate, and I’m really not quite sure what would happen to Hegeseth’s ambitions or his standing, if he remains as defense secretary for a while longer, if the war goes even further south,” said Shelley.

A 2028 presidential campaign would also present a more immediate logistical problem. Civilian War Department employees are prohibited from seeking political office, meaning Hegseth would have to leave the administration to launch a campaign — potentially forcing him to step down as war secretary while the United States remains engaged in Iran.

The presidency, however, isn’t the only potential opening on Hegseth’s political horizon. One could emerge much closer to home.

Hegseth has lived in Tennessee since 2022 and was floated as a potential candidate for governor last year. While Hegseth did not run, incumbent Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) did and won the GOP nomination. Blackburn is seen as a shoo-in for the November general election and will likely appoint a Senate successor once inaugurated governor.

Hegseth could emerge as a contender for the appointment, particularly if he had Trump’s backing. But there are potential obstacles as well.

Tennessee GOP’s bylaws require candidates to have “voted in at least three of the four most recent Statewide Republican primary elections,” a requirement that could complicate Hegseth’s ability to run as a Republican. The state party previously cited the provision in 2022 when it removed former Trump administration official Morgan Ortagus from the Republican primary for Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District.

For all the speculation, some veteran Iowa Republicans caution that the war secretary has more immediate concerns than plotting his next campaign.

“If somebody were asking me my advice, it would be simply do your day job,” said former Iowa GOP co-Chairman David Oman. “We all should see what happens in November.
