That figure was a 55% increase from the 34,725 absentia orders issued in May, which was the first month the bulk scheduling began, according to authors Joseph Gunther and Brandon Marrow.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given ICE\u2019s well-documented pattern of arresting immigrants who show up for routine court proceedings prior to this spring, many immigrants may fear going to court for the hearings out of concern they may be swept up by ICE.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, immigrants are being notified hours to days ahead of the mandatory hearings rather than weeks to months in advance, making it more logistically challenging to facilitate the last-minute court date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given that most immigrants are unable to hire attorneys to represent them, their ability to track court proceedings and changes to their court dates is low, according to Kocher.
