During an interview on NBC\u2019s Meet the Press, Jeffries avoided directly endorsing court-packing but emphasized the need for ethical standards and reforms, including criticizing recent rulings like Louisiana v. Callais. Notably,he indicated that prominent Democrats such as Jamie Raskin and Hank Johnson-who openly support increasing the number of Supreme Court justices-would led the push for such reforms. These Democrats have sponsored legislation to expand the court from nine to thirteen justices and oppose efforts to maintain the court&#8217;s current size. jeffries\u2019s evasive responses and his delegation of reform efforts to known court-packing advocates suggest that his comments serve as a facade, masking the Democrats\u2019 true intentions to alter the court&#8217;s composition if they regain power. Historically, Democrats have viewed the Supreme Court as a tool to impose their policies through activist rulings rather than constitutional amendments, and with the current court overturning some of those precedents, Democrats appear committed to expanding the court to secure favorable outcomes.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is trying to play coy on whether he\u2019ll support <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/court-packing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">packing<\/a> the Supreme Court with left-wing activists if Democrats retake control of the federal government. But it\u2019s obvious from his comments on the subject that is exactly what he\u2019ll do. <\/p>\n<p>Appearing on NBC News\u2019 <em>Meet the Press<\/em> on Sunday, Jeffries was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/transcripts\/meet-press-august-16-2026-rcna592786\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asked<\/a> by Democrat-loving host <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/kristen-welker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kristen Welker<\/a> if he backs adding more justices to the high court. Welker cited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/clip\/public-affairs-event\/house-minority-leader-jeffries-calls-for-dramatic-supreme-court-reform\/5204370\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent comments<\/a> Jeffries made days prior touting his support for \u201cdramatic Supreme Court reform,\u201d as well as remarks from former Vice President Kamala Harris, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/08\/16\/democrats-are-proposing-adding-supreme-court-justices-limiting-their-terms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signaled<\/a> her support for court-packing.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, Jeffries avoided directly answering the question. <\/p>\n<p>He first began by characterizing \u201cdramatic reform\u201d as \u201cmaking sure that the Supreme Court actually has an ethical code of conduct so that they\u2019re not able to simply conduct themselves in ways that are inconsistent with the notion in this country that no one is above the law.\u201d This included giving a shoutout to his corporate media allies\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/01\/07\/democrats-ethics-smears-against-thomas-and-alito-are-so-embarrassing-they-buried-their-own-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dishonest hatchet jobs<\/a> against Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito to bolster his faulty argument. <\/p>\n<p>Upon discussing the \u201cbroad reforms\u201d Democrats have in store, Jeffries pivoted to smearing the high court\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/louisiana-v-callais\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Louisiana v. Callais<\/a><\/em>  decision kneecapping racial considerations in redistricting. He claimed the <em>Callais<\/em> majority was \u201cdo[ing] the bidding of extreme MAGA Republicans who turned around in the deep south\u201d and \u201cunleashed \u2026 Jim Crow-like tactics\u201d by undertaking colorblind redistricting. <\/p>\n<p>The New York Democrat furthermore contended that the ruling is \u201cinconsistent with the law and with the Constitution,\u201d but predictably didn\u2019t bother explaining how. <\/p>\n<p>Although his remarks appear vague on the surface, Jeffries actually gave the game away in his closing comment to Welker. After he finished his anti-<em>Callais<\/em> screed, the House minority leader pledged that Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/jamie-raskin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jamie Raskin<\/a>, D-Md., and other leading Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee \u201care going to take the lead on what dramatic reform of the Supreme Court looks like.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The reason that sentence is significant is that leading Judiciary Democrats like Raskin and Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/hank-johnson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hank Johnson<\/a>, D-Ga., are some of the party\u2019s biggest court-packing supporters.<\/p>\n<p>Raskin and Johnson have both <a href=\"https:\/\/hankjohnson.house.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/rep-johnson-sen-markey-announce-legislation-expand-supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sponsored<\/a> legislation that seeks to increase the number of justices on the Supreme Court from nine to 13, which conveniently adds the four seats needed for leftists to acquire an ideological majority. Both congressmen have also <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/05\/21\/in-hearing-on-court-packings-partisan-perils-not-a-single-democrat-disavowed-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">run interference<\/a> for court-packing during committee discussions on the subject and recently <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/06\/03\/not-a-single-house-judiciary-dem-supports-amendment-keeping-scotus-at-9-justices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opposed<\/a> a constitutional amendment to keep the court at nine justices. <\/p>\n<p>If Jeffries doesn\u2019t support Democrats\u2019 court-packing efforts, then why didn\u2019t he explicitly say so when asked by Welker? And if he opposes such a plan, why would he put two of the party\u2019s most ardent court-packing supporters in charge of this \u201creform\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>The questions answer themselves. <\/p>\n<p><strong>[RELATED:[RELATED:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/07\/23\/vulnerable-house-dems-refuse-to-say-if-theyll-back-anti-court-packing-amendment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vulnerable House Dems Refuse To Say If They\u2019ll Back Anti-Court-Packing Amendment<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What Jeffries is doing is no different than what <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joe Biden<\/a> did in 2020 or what <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/abigail-spanberger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Abigail Spanberger<\/a> did last year. It\u2019s an attempt to deceive voters with a \u201cmoderate\u201d-sounding position, with every intention of governing hard-left once given power. <\/p>\n<p>The left has long viewed the Supreme Court as a mechanism of power meant to bypass the constitutional amendment process. Rather than convince their fellow Americans to support their policies, leftists used activist justices on the high court to enshrine their agenda into law via overreaching rulings. <\/p>\n<p>With the current court largely working to overturn many of those bad precedents, that path is no longer available to the left. As such, Democrats have taken to launching a full-out assault on the conservative justices \u2014 all in an effort to get the outcomes they want. <\/p>\n<p>Jeffries may think he\u2019s being coy enough with his language to obscure his party\u2019s ultimate endgame.
