He opposes the \u201csanctuary\u201d policies of his Democratic rival, incumbent Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY), when it comes to immigration enforcement and often emphasizes the hundreds of illegal aliens removed from Nassau due to his cooperation with federal law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hewing so close to Trump carries risk in a state that former Vice President Kamala Harris won by 12 points in 2024. Trump\u2019s margin in New York was the strongest a Republican has posted since former President George H.W. Bush narrowly lost the state in 1988 on his way the White House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Trump\u2019s approval ratings have <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/polls\/approval\/donald-trump\/approval-rating\">suffered<\/a> a year and a half into his second term and are muddying a race that Blakeman wants to keep squarely focused on Hochul and her management of the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats have been <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5ny.com\/news\/ny-governor-bruce-blakeman-donald-trump-democratic-party\">quick to paint<\/a> Blakeman as a \u201csuck up\u201d to Trump who would enable his agenda as governor. They\u2019ve run multimillion-dollar ad campaigns claiming Blakeman will \u201conly fight for Trump\u201d and hope to associate him with tariffs and a war in Iran that have raised the cost of living.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have elections which used to be local that are now nationalized,\u201d said Bob Liff, a longtime Democratic consultant in New York. \u201cHe\u2019s made his bed, and he\u2019s got to sleep in it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blakeman\u2019s task will be convincing voters that Hochul, not the White House, is to blame for New York\u2019s problems. He faulted the governor for the affordability crisis, pointing in part to her opposition to new production of \u201ccheap energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s also betting that a \u201claw and order\u201d message will be as salient as it was for Republican Lee Zeldin, who came within 6 points of defeating Hochul in 2022, and accused her of being the \u201cmost pro-criminal governor in the United States\u201d over her approach to bail policies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m running on my record as a chief executive, and I\u2019m running against her record as a miserable chief executive, the worst governor in the United States of America,\u201d Blakeman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ryan Radulovacki, a Hochul spokesman, responded that Blakeman has made \u201ccrystal clear where he stands: with Donald Trump, far-right election deniers, rogue ICE agents, and anti-gun safety extremists as they make New York families less safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNew Yorkers and their families want no part of Blakeman and Trump\u2019s dangerous MAGA agenda to gut Medicaid, enable ICE\u2019s dangerous tactics, and allow an armed MAGA militia to undermine law enforcement \u2013\u00a0they want a governor who\u2019ll actually fight to keep them safe,\u201d Radulovacki added in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is at least one significant advantage to Blakeman aligning himself with Trump. The president is still popular with Republican voters whose turnout will be essential in places like upstate New York and on Long Island. His visit to Nassau on Friday was geared toward highlighting the low crime rates in his county.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blakeman is also not the only New York politician making a similar calculation. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY), an occasional Trump critic and one of the most endangered House Republicans, stood with the president at a May rally in Rockland County, a right-leaning part of his district.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the interview, Blakeman argued that his relationship with Trump would help bring resources to the state. He is running at a time of growing tensions between Hochul and the president, who have sparred in recent days over a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4682782\/trump-eyeing-federal-action-block-mamdani-pied-a-terre-tax\/\">New York City tax on second homes<\/a> and the administration\u2019s decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/scotus-win-for-trump-admin-should-motivate-us-to-eliminate-tps-completely\/\" title=\"SCOTUS Win For Admin Should Motivate Us To Eliminate TPS\">rescind temporary protected status<\/a> for Haitian immigrants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think it\u2019s a good thing when the governor of the state of New York can pick up the phone and speak with President Trump and get things done in New York to create prosperity, better jobs, better benefits, and more economic activity,\u201d Blakeman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhether you like him or not, he loves New York,\u201d Blakeman added of Trump. \u201cHe\u2019s a proud New Yorker. He grew up in Queens, and his heart is here in New York. So, I think he will be very helpful in helping me with the programs we need to create better jobs for people, so that our young people will want to stay in the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blakeman\u2019s candidacy was attractive to national Republicans, in part, because he is well known in Nassau and could help the party flip House seats on Long Island that are currently represented by Democrats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He entered the governor\u2019s race at the expense of Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), a more vocal Trump supporter who ended her campaign in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s very important for me that I don\u2019t have a lonely victory, that I have Republican members of Congress that are elected, and state Assembly and state Senate Republicans, as well as local government Republicans,\u201d Blakeman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is whether Blakeman can himself unseat an incumbent whose approval ratings are sitting in the upper 40s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blakeman is well liked in Nassau, one of the most populous counties in New York, and has promoted himself <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/long-island\/politics\/blakeman-ads-new-york-city-jkwe8hac\">as a centrist<\/a> in campaign advertising. But polling suggests he is an unknown quantity for 40% of voters and is vulnerable to being defined by Democrats, who have more cash to spend on the airwaves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of July, Hochul\u2019s political operation has amassed a war chest that is <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/subscriber.politicopro.com\/article\/2026\/07\/hochul-dems-have-9-times-as-much-money-as-blakeman-gop-01001116\">nine times as large<\/a> as Blakeman\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not as if a significant number of people upstate knew who he was, and their introduction to him is MAGA and Trump,\u201d Liff said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Siena poll had <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/new-york-playbook-pm\/2026\/08\/12\/no-dem-panic-yet-01035550\">encouraging signs<\/a> for Republicans. Blakeman leads Hochul by 8 points in the suburbs and 5 points with independent voters. Overall, Hochul is ahead, though, by 10 points \u2014 a similar margin to the one she enjoyed at this point in her 2022 race for governor against Zeldin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blakeman disputes those findings and says the numbers he\u2019s seen show \u201cthis is a single-digit race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEither I\u2019m a little ahead of Kathy Hochul, or she\u2019s a little ahead of me,\u201d Blakeman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zeldin\u2019s performance in 2022 was the closest any Republican has come to winning the governor\u2019s mansion since the 1990s, and Blakeman said he\u2019s turned to him for advice in his own campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Zeldin, who now leads the Environmental Protection Agency under Trump, was running at a very different moment in New York and national politics.
