What is more, these pistols are in common use; indeed, they are among the most popular firearms in the nation. The fact that the ban targets only one category of popular handguns does not make it constitutional,\u201d the lawsuit continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gun rights groups claim that the law violates the Supreme Court\u2019s 2008 ruling in <em>District of Columbia v. Heller<\/em>, which upheld the right for citizens to own handguns for self-protection, and they urged a federal judge to strike the ban down as violating the Second Amendment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnti-gun governors like Kathy Hochul have been put on notice,\u201d NRA-Instutute for Legislative Action Executive Director John Commerford said in a statement. \u201cThe NRA is taking aggressive legal action nationwide to defend the rights of law-abiding Americans. Hochul\u2019s Glock ban targets the most popular handguns in the country and seeks to punish honest citizens simply for wanting to protect themselves and their families. Bruen<\/em>,\u201d Kraut said. \u201cNow these lawmakers seem intent to be reminded that [the Supreme Court] has also already been clear that handguns, the \u2018quintessential\u2019 arm of choice for self-defense, are protected under the Second Amendment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo more can New York ban one of the most popular brand and type of handguns in the country than can it ban all handguns outright,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the lawsuit filed this week deals with bans on popular handguns, a pair of lawsuits dealing with bans on some semiautomatic rifles is set to be heard by the Supreme Court in its upcoming term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/4655258\/assault-weapons-bans-on-their-way-to-supreme-court\/\">\u2018ASSAULT\u00a0WEAPONS\u2019 BANS ARE ON THEIR WAY TO THE SUPREME COURT<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Supreme Court will hear the consolidated case of <em>Viramontes v. Cook County<\/em> and <em>Grant v. Higgins<\/em>, which deals with state \u201cassault weapons\u201d bans in Cook County, Illinois, and Connecticut, respectively.
