Watch where this kind of amazing argument comes from, because it tells us quite a bit about the endless weirdness of leftist politics in the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p>Many observers have <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Rothmus\/status\/2086642819716755890\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argued<\/a> that \u201cthe left has no theory of mind of the right,\u201d a conclusion that draws on the <a href=\"https:\/\/righteousmind.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">work<\/a> of the social psychologist Jonathan Haidt. When leftists attack conservative views, they can\u2019t quite pull it off, because they just don\u2019t know what they\u2019re arguing against. They don\u2019t have the vocabulary. You\u2019ve seen slogan-chanting journalists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aMcjxSThD54\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">struggle like a drowning man<\/a> in the face of arguments they can\u2019t begin to perceive, trying to take a statement and turn it into what they think it is: \u201cWhat you\u2019re saying is \u2026\u201d Speaking with someone who doesn\u2019t chant the ritual slogans, they try to <em>channel<\/em> the discussion so it can flow into the grooves that have been carved into their minds by years of mindless compliance.<\/p>\n<p>When Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ynetnews.com\/article\/rkfy6xvigl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> that she plans to freeze her eggs so she can possibly one day buy her own baby from a medical corporation as a product, conservative writers, <em>especially conservative writers who are mothers<\/em>, wrote that she was making a bad choice. At The Federalist, Katy Faust <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/08\/14\/if-you-want-to-be-a-grandparent-one-day-raise-your-kids-to-get-married-and-want-babies-asap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote about<\/a> the pleasures of family, describing the fun she and her husband had with their children: \u201cThey grew up knowing that children weren\u2019t an interruption to the good life. Children were the good life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chasing the same themes of connection and the pursuit of a satisfying life, Jordan Boyd <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/08\/10\/if-youre-freezing-your-eggs-at-36-like-aoc-youve-been-lied-to\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote about<\/a> the costs and complications of medicalized pregnancy, comparing it unfavorably to the old-fashioned kind. On video, AOC said she was seeking control over her life by buying fertility; in fact, Boyd wrote, she\u2019s chasing \u201ca very pricey <em>illusion <\/em>of control,\u201d one that can fail, in the context of a choice that suggests significant social decline:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccrmivf.com\/blog\/is-infertility-on-the-rise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Infertility is rising<\/a>, birth rates are <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/07\/25\/american-birth-rates-rates-drop-to-levels-of-civilizational-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dangerously low<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w29893\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unhappiness<\/a>, especially in single, childless females, persists. The solutions to these issues are widely and ferociously debated. All data suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.compactmag.com\/article\/get-married-young\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">getting married young<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/09\/21\/5-benefits-of-marrying-long-before-you-own-a-house-and-establish-a-successful-career\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">optimizing your chances at natural conception<\/a> by trying for babies during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/utm_sourcerssutm_mediumrssutm_campaignif-youre-freezing-your-eggs-at-36-like-aoc-youve-been-lied-to\/\" title=\"If You...re Freezing Your ... At 36 Like AOC, You...ve Been Lied To\">peak fertility years<\/a> can\u2019t hurt, though.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The conservative critique of frozen eggs among women who are turning to IVF as a lifestyle choice rather than a medical solution to impaired fertility is an argument about connection, social ties, humanity, pleasure, and the meaning of family. They\u2019re talking about ways to escape social atomization and the thing Stella Morabito has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Weaponization-Loneliness-Tyrants-Isolation-Silence\/dp\/B0H9VN9BBV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a> \u201cthe weaponization of loneliness.\u201d Buying a baby unit out of the freezer isn\u2019t as much fun as making a baby. The conservative argument about families and babies is an argument about <em>living well<\/em>. You\u2019ll like it. It\u2019s a way of living that offers considerable pleasure.<\/p>\n<p>Now: At the self-parodying politics-as-lifestyle website Salon, Amanda Marcotte angrily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2026\/08\/12\/aoc-exposes-magas-motherhood-hypocrisy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">denounces<\/a> conservatives for their <em>hypocrisy<\/em>: These people say that they like babies and want people to have more of them, but then they say that AOC shouldn\u2019t perform fertility procedures. See what <em>liars<\/em> they are?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>As the 36-year-old New York Democrat was no doubt aware would happen, MAGA commentators lashed out at her for preserving her ability to have kids in the future. Christian right commentator Allie Beth Stuckey <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/conservmillen\/status\/2086524602738442603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> she was \u201cselfish.\u201d Podcast host Matt Walsh <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MattWalshBlog\/status\/2086502142798356862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a> Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s choice \u201cbackwards and ridiculous.\u201d The Federalist\u2019s Mollie Hemingway <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MZHemingway\/status\/2086505214819827958\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argued<\/a> that the congresswoman\u2019s video was a \u201csad public performance\/display of unnecessarily unwise decision making.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the MAGAsphere, it\u2019s not enough for a woman to want motherhood. If she doesn\u2019t give up her career and even her personal happiness in the process of making babies, it doesn\u2019t count. Being pregnant isn\u2019t enough. Conservatives also seem to require the \u201cbarefoot\u201d and \u201cin the kitchen\u201d parts of the traditional job description.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>See that? \u201cIf she doesn\u2019t give up her career and even her personal happiness in the process of making babies,\u201d conservatives hate it. Pregnancy is ruin. You crush your life against the grindstone of babies. The right demands that pregnancy be miserable and agonizing, and they won\u2019t allow women to have careers. Conservatives believe that motherhood must be a crucible of degradation, <em>obviously<\/em>. Critics like Hemingway and Stuckey, Marcotte concludes, are \u201cblinded by their own sexism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe right\u2019s reaction revealed what the White House has been trying to hide from swing voters all along,\u201d Marcotte writes. \u201cTheir chatter about fertility rates was never about happy families or a prosperous nation. To the contrary, as evidenced by the draconian bans in red states, Republicans will gladly sacrifice happiness and prosperity for the goal of subjugating women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you <em>think really hard<\/em>, you can probably spot the flaw in the argument that the high-profile media professionals Allie Beth Stuckey and Mollie Hemingway believe that motherhood means women can\u2019t ever be allowed to have careers.<\/p>\n<p>But Marcotte isn\u2019t arguing with conservative critics of AOC\u2019s decision. She\u2019s arguing with the crazy lady in the mirror, and projecting her psychological inventions into the public sphere. This is why we don\u2019t have ordinary political debate anymore. OH YOU MEAN YOU WANT TO GRIND YOUR HANDMAIDS UNDER YOUR NAZI BOOTHEEL, some lunatic screams at a mom who says she had fun raising children with her husband. It\u2019s like a game of tennis where you hit a ball over the net and it comes back as a hand grenade. The \u201cwhat you mean is \u2026\u201d maneuver is the end of all possibility of mutual understanding.<\/p>\n<p>The strangest thing in all of this is that Marcotte is blasting right through a bunch of choices that are extraordinarily easy to criticize from a set of leftist ideological priors. A natural and simple process that people can quite easily do the natural way has become an expensive product. The commodification of children shouldn\u2019t come naturally to critics of capitalism, but they have no political views that aren\u2019t purely oppositional. <\/p>\n<p>The same goes for the remarkable view that women shouldn\u2019t sacrifice their careers to have children. You should abandon the idea of family so you can climb the ladder at a corporation, argue \u2026 people who are uncomfortable with the profit-making function. Can we call them Walmart leftists? Serve that corporation, atomized girlboss!<\/p>\n<p>A place in the culture where left and right should be able to meet, the satisfaction of a rich family life, demands ritual denunciation. The socialist historian Christopher Lasch <a href=\"https:\/\/wwnorton.com\/books\/9780393313031\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argued<\/a> that the family was a \u201chaven in a heartless world,\u201d the moral center of a healthy society. But Trump says he likes babies, so this is proof that baby-making is a very dark thing that has to be wrestled down and controlled. There aren\u2019t enough psychologists in the world to get to the bottom of this.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I have to go oppress my wife now, because her tears are my delicious wine.
