While he claims support for universal health coverage, his wife\u2019s psychiatric practice does not accept Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance, highlighting a disconnect between his rhetoric and personal behavior. Despite reporting a high income that places them in the top one percent, the family\u2019s choices reveal that implementing single-payer systems would be financially and practically problematic for medical providers, who are unlikely to accept reduced compensation and increased workload. Past and contemporary examples,such as the practices of Judith Steinberg (wife of vermont\u2019s ex-Governor Howard Dean),illustrate how successful health care policies frequently enough face resistance from providers impacted by lower reimbursements. El-Sayed\u2019s criticisms of corporatism contrast with the realities of socialized medicine,which would likely lead to increased taxes and greater government control,ultimately affecting physicians&#8217; compensation and political influence.His stance on socialized health care appears politically motivated, with his personal actions undermining his claims. Critics argue that Michigan voters should question his sincerity and focus on his family\u2019s practices rather than his statements.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The candidate Democrats nominated for Michigan\u2019s open U.S. Senate seat, Abdul El-Sayed, has embraced many radical positions in his career. When it comes to health care, he doesn\u2019t have far to look to find out how radical his position is.<\/p>\n<p>El-Sayed claims that he supports single-payer health care, but the actions of his family suggest otherwise. And in that respect, El-Sayed has company, because single-payer supporters don\u2019t want to put their money where their mouths are.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, El-Sayed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/transcripts\/meet-press-august-8-2026-rcna591580\">appeared<\/a> on NBC\u2019s <em>Meet the Press<\/em> to discuss his campaign. He claimed that he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/what-does-newsoms-wealth-tax-flip-flop-portend-for-single-payer-health-care\/\" title=\"What Newsom\u2019s Wealth Tax Flip-Flop Means For ...\">supported single-payer<\/a> because \u201cit would guarantee [Americans] the health care they need independent of the circumstances, wherever they needed to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But when it comes to guaranteeing health care, El-Sayed\u2019s wife, Sarah Jukaku, does no such thing. As the\u00a0Washington Free Beacon <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/abdul-el-sayed-wants-medicare-for-all-from-cradle-to-grave-his-psychiatrist-wife-doesnt-accept-medicare-or-any-insurance-at-all\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discovered<\/a> last month, her psychiatric practice doesn\u2019t accept Medicare, Medicaid, or any form of private insurance. Earlier this summer, the practice reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/the-doctor-thinks-of-you-as-a-half-citizen-abdul-el-sayed-said-doctors-who-dont-accept-medicaid-discriminate-against-black-people-his-psychiatrist-wife-doesnt-par\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scrubbed<\/a> a section from the FAQ page on its website that included the following: \u201cDo you accept my insurance? No.\u00a0Dr. Jukaku is out of network for all insurance companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/us\/abdul-el-sayed-s-medicare-for-all-crusade-collides-with-an-awkward-contradiction-involving-his-wife\/ar-AA29sQOY?ocid=BingNewsSerp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press reports<\/a> indicate that the couple reported nearly $700,000 in combined income on their 2025 tax returns. That income would put El-Sayed and Jukaku in the <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/data\/all\/federal\/who-pays-federal-income-taxes-tax-year-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top one percent<\/a> of household income nationwide. Yet for the family to practice what El-Sayed preaches about \u201cguaranteeing Americans the health care they need independent of the circumstances\u201d would apparently put too much financial strain on these one-percenters.<\/p>\n<p>But El-Sayed isn\u2019t the first progressive on health care whose political rhetoric didn\u2019t match his family\u2019s actions. Nearly three decades ago, Vermont\u2019s\u00a0Rutland Herald\u00a0ran a little article about a local physician practice.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Judith Steinberg told her patients in a letter that Community Health Plan\/Kaiser Permanente has cut payments to her practice while raising rates to its insured.\u00a0The decision by Steinberg\u2019s group means several hundred patients in CHP\u2019s commercial and its \u201cAccess Plus\u201d Medicaid plan will be obliged to either switch doctors or switch insurers.\u00a0The practice is the only CHP primary care provider in Shelburne \u2026 CHP serves about 30,000 of the 51,000 Medicaid clients who are in HMOs in Vermont.<\/p>\n<p>None of this would merit news coverage, but for the fact that Dr. Judith Steinberg just so happens to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Judith_Steinberg_Dean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spouse<\/a> of then-Gov. Howard Dean, D-Vt. Dean\u2019s wife dropped out of Vermont\u2019s largest Medicaid plan while Dean was governor due to low reimbursement rates and onerous bureaucratic regulations the governor himself imposed.\u00a0Recall too that Dean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplesworld.org\/article\/howard-dean-tells-netroots-we-re-going-to-win-a-public-option\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a> legislation that lacked a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/xavier-becerra-is-no-moderate\/\" title=\"Xavier Becerra Is No Moderate\">government-run health plan<\/a> not \u201cworth doing\u201d \u2014 except, of course, when it came to his wife\u2019s medical practice.<\/p>\n<p>I noted <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2018\/08\/02\/bernie-sanders-supporters-admit-socialized-medicine-plan-will-ration-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">several years ago<\/a> that the success of single-payer health care depends upon an inherently illogical question: \u201cWill doctors and hospitals agree to provide more care to more patients for the same amount of money?\u201d Making health care \u201cfree,\u201d and offering it to more people (i.e., <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2019\/05\/13\/kamala-harris-take-away-americans-health-insurance-make-pay-illegal-immigrants-health-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">undocumented immigrants<\/a>), will increase medical providers\u2019 workload \u2014 and shifting to (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/files\/document\/illustrative-alternative-scenario-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unsustainable<\/a>) Medicare payment levels would likely lower their overall compensation rather than increasing it.<\/p>\n<p>Through their actions, people like Sarah Jukaku and Judith Steinberg have already demonstrated the answer to my question. Physicians will never stand for the increased workload and reduced compensation necessary to make single-payer\u2019s math work. <\/p>\n<p>That makes El-Sayed\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/transcripts\/meet-press-august-8-2026-rcna591580\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">comments<\/a> on <em>Meet the Press <\/em>about capitalism and corporatism particularly ironic. He decried \u201chuge corporations that have used their power, in effect, to try and buy politicians, so that those politicians will turn around and help them use government to protect their position in markets.\u201d But if El-Sayed and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt, think corporatism is bad now, just wait until the government gets full control of health care, and doctors have to increase their political contributions and come begging to Washington to receive a pay increase.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/warren-asks-what-the-country-can-do-for-you-11572909098\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elizabeth Warren<\/a> in her 2020 campaign, at least El-Sayed admitted on <em>Meet the Press <\/em>that federal taxes will have to rise \u2014 and not just on one-percenters like him \u2014 to pay for single-payer. But he still isn\u2019t being anywhere near honest with his would-be constituents about all the consequences of socialized medicine.
