Over the past two decades, she has become the most talkative justice, averaging 1,263 words per case, which is more than twice the amount spoken by othre justices like Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor. JacksonS frequent speaking is believed too be a way to communicate directly with the public, especially when she anticipates unfavorable rulings due to the court&#8217;s conservative majority.Critics argue that her speeches often include nonsensical or leftist viewpoints, such as her confusing argument about Japanese law during a citizenship case or her comments on race and voting rights, which some see as attempts to advance ideological positions. pfTrackEvent(&#039;Study: Ketanji Brown Jackson Speaks More Than Twice As Much As Any Of Her Fellow Justices&#039;); return false;\" title=\"Printer Friendly, PDF &#038; Email\">                     <span id=\"printfriendly-text2\" class=\"pf-button-text\"><i class=\"mdi mdi-printer\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span>                     <\/a>                 <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<div class=\"pf-content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there\u2019s one thing Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/ketanji-brown-jackson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ketanji Brown Jackson<\/a> loves to do more than anything during Supreme Court oral arguments, it\u2019s talk \u2014 and talk, and talk, and talk some more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Thursday, The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/08\/13\/us\/politics\/supreme-court-changing-oral-arguments.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> on a new study that found Jackson is \u201cby far the most talkative justice\u201d on the court over the past two decades. Spanning from October 2005 to April 2026, the analysis found that the Biden appointee spoke an average of 1,263 words per case in the four short years she\u2019s been on the bench \u2014 a figure the outlet noted is \u201cmore than double the justices\u2019 average.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3904172639\" class=\"d-flex justify-content-center fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 fdrlst__b89e9-entity-placement\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAccording to the study, [Jackson] speaks 23 percent of the words uttered by the justices,\u201d the report reads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study found that the closest justice to rival Jackson in the number of words spoken per case is her former boss and predecessor, retired Justice Stephen Breyer, who clocked in at 818 words per case. In the years Jackson\u2019s been on the court, that second-place ranking belongs to Justice Sonia Sotomayor, at 791 words.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Times offered three possible explanations for this trend. This includes the theory that Jackson, \u201cunderstanding she will be on the losing end of many cases on a court where conservatives hold a supermajority, may view her questioning as an opportunity to reach beyond the courtroom and communicate with the public directly through the live-streamed arguments.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"1\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NYT: \u201cJustice Jackson \u2026 has emerged as by far the most talkative justice, uttering an average of 1,263 words per case, more than double the justices\u2019 average. Barbara<\/em> hearing on birthplace citizenship earlier this year, the Biden appointee \u201cmused that if she stole a wallet while in Japan, she would be bound by her \u2018allegiance\u2019 to the country\u2019s criminal laws and the consequences therein,\u201d as The Federalist\u2019s Matt Kittle <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/04\/02\/justice-jacksons-turning-japanese-argument-is-so-dumb-it-stuns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was thinking, I, a U.S. citizen am visiting Japan. And what it means is that if I steal someone\u2019s wallet in Japan, the Japanese authorities can arrest me and prosecute me,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cIt\u2019s allegiance meaning can they control you as a matter of law. I can also rely on them, if my wallet is stolen, to, you know, under Japanese law, go and prosecute the person who has stolen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201dSo there\u2019s this relationship, even though I\u2019m just a temporary traveler, I\u2019m just on vacation in Japan, I\u2019m still locally owing allegiance in that sense,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jackson\u2019s nonsensical approach to birthplace citizenship ultimately carried the day, with Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/06\/30\/scotus-says-babies-of-illegal-aliens-ccp-birth-tourists-are-us-citizens-because-of-magic-dirt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">joining<\/a> her and her fellow liberals in codifying it into the 14th Amendment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Court listeners weren\u2019t spared from the Biden appointee\u2019s unintelligible commentary in the Supreme Court\u2019s <em>Louisiana v. Callais<\/em> hearing, either. While considering the use of race in redistricting, the junior justice <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/10\/17\/here-are-6-key-moments-from-scotus-arguments-in-landmark-race-based-redistricting-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suggested<\/a> in last year\u2019s hearing that states should consider race in the process because black Americans are systemically \u201cdisabled\u201d and don\u2019t have legitimate access to voting systems. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Democrat appointee also ran a full-court (no pun intended) <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/12\/08\/justice-jackson-downplays-unelected-experts-running-the-executive-without-presidential-oversight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defense<\/a> of the runaway administrative state during last year\u2019s <em>Trump v. Slaughter<\/em> hearing.
