Notably, Rep. John Larson of Connecticut, who served nearly three decades, was defeated by younger candidate Luke Bronin, who campaigned on the need for generational change. Similar losses include Reps. Diana DeGette, Shri Thanedar, and Adriano Espaillat, all of whom were associated with the Democratic socialists of America and lost to younger or more centrist challengers. <\/p>\n<p>Many of these defeats are attributed to voters&#8217; desire for fresh portrayal and frustration with the establishment,especially amid internal ideological battles within the party. Long-serving incumbents like Rep. Green and Rep. Julie Johnson also lost to younger opponents,partly due to perceptions that extended congressional tenure is a liability. John Larson (D-CT) marked the latest such loss, losing his Tuesday primary to 47-year-old former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin. Reps. Diana DeGette (D-CO), 69, Shri Thanedar (D-MI), 71, and Adriano Espaillat (D-NY), 71, all lost to challengers associated with the Democratic Socialists of America.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-1\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-1\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-15\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But all of the challengers, New York\u2019s Darializa Avila Chevalier, Michigan\u2019s Donavan McKinney, and Colorado\u2019s Melat Kiros, were all younger than the incumbents they ousted. Chevalier is 32, McKinney is 34, and Kiros is 29.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the primary battles revealed an ideological divide within the party, not all of the incumbent losses have been on ideological grounds. Bronin centralized his campaign on a need for generational change in Washington, saying in his victory speech, \u201cIf leaders in our party don\u2019t recognize that we need to make changes, then the changes are going to come from the ground up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">  \u201cThat\u2019s a message our party needs to hear,\u201d Bronin said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rep. Al Green (D-TX), 78, lost to 38-year-old freshman Rep. Christian Menefee, who is considered more centrist than the Texas incumbent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rep. Julie Johnson (D-TX), 60, only served one term in the House and was backed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), but lost to former Rep. Colin Allred, 43, who attacked Johnson over congressional stock trading, tapping into populist discontent over the issue. Allred pointed to trades made by Johnson, who says her trades are managed by a financial manager, to companies such as Palantir.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cook Political Report\u2019s Erin Covey told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that Larson and Green, whose opponents were not running to their left, \u201cdefinitely lost due to the fact that they had been in Congress so long\u201d and were \u201con the older side.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen I think about generational contrasts, I think it both has to do with age, energy, how you present in media, and then also just like time in Congress,\u201d Covey said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Covey said that while incumbency is usually an advantage, in an era where \u201cpeople are frustrated with the establishment,\u201d being a member of Congress for a long time is a \u201cliability in a lot of these races.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The losses have echoes of the Democratic Party\u2019s push for generational change that started during the 2024 elections.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Covey told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that there\u2019s a \u201cnew fresh anger with the establishment\u201d and that Democratic voters are \u201cfrustrated\u201d with party leadership and members of Congress, saying that voters believe elected Democrats are \u201cnot doing enough to fight back against the Trump administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat can look both like being more moderate and more likely to compromise with Republicans on certain issues,\u201d Covey explained. \u201cAnd it can also look like having been around in Congress for a very long time and not having that much to show for it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Covey went on to say the losses stem from both the ideological and generational fights, a combination that makes the line of attack against the incumbents \u201cpotent.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Democratic Party has been reckoning with a push for generational change since former President Joe Biden was forced to end his reelection campaign over concerns about his age and mental acuity after a poor debate performance against President Donald Trump. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The debate, and subsequent suspension of Biden\u2019s campaign, sent shock waves through the Democratic Party and sparked a reckoning over aging Democratic members in Congress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democratic strategist Hyma Moore told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> the push for generational change goes beyond just age, saying that while it is a part of it, \u201ca big part that we\u2019re missing is if you\u2019ve been around for more than four or five terms \u2026 I think people see you as the generation of Maxine Waters and Jim Clyburn, regardless of your age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you have an incumbent status, they\u2019re not nuancing it,\u201d Moore explained. \u201cNo, they\u2019re saying we want a wholesale shift right now. We want to try somebody new.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The loss of Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY), 50, showcases Democratic appetite for new membership, with the incumbent being the only one to lose to a challenger older than him. Goldman only served two terms in Congress, but lost his primary to Brad Lander, 57, who was backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4681932\/progressives-skirt-past-woke-pasts-centrists-wont-let-them\/\">PROGRESSIVES WANT TO SKIRT PAST THEIR \u2018WOKE\u2019 PASTS.
