And perhaps no television actor ever altered my perception of (and associations with) a novelty item forever in the way that Pastore did with the Big Mouth Billy Bass talking fish. What had been a gimmicky singing plaque became, after his turn in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/1714596\/sopranos-creator-opens-up-about-tonys-death\/\">Tony Soprano<\/a>\u2019s fever dream sequence, an object freighted with menace, melancholy, and dark comedy. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/navy\/\">Navy<\/a>, serving until his honorable discharge in 1967. For nearly three decades, he worked in the nightclub business as a bouncer, limousine driver, and eventually owner of the Crazy Horse in New Rochelle. The club\u2019s patrons included the young actors Matt and Kevin Dillon. After watching Pastore perform in community theater, they urged him to pursue acting. For fans of both <em>The Sopranos<\/em> and <em>Entourage<\/em> like myself, it\u2019s fascinating to learn that without Johnny \u201cDrama\u201d Chase (Kevin Dillon) of <em>Entourage<\/em>, we may have never had \u201cBig Pussy\u201d of <em>The Sopranos<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-1\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-1\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-15\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pastore was already in his 40s when he finally took the leap. The transition was gradual and grounded in the world he knew. His early credits were small but telling: a small role in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/premium\/3865871\/martin-scorsese-apple-tv-show-review\/\">Martin Scorsese<\/a>\u2019s <em>Goodfellas<\/em> (1990), the \u201cCopa Wiseguy\u201d in Brian De Palma\u2019s <em>Carlito\u2019s Way<\/em> (1993), and several other somewhat typecast \u201ctough-guy\u201d parts. Cast as Tony\u2019s longtime friend and crew member Salvatore Bonpensiero \u2014\u00a0nicknamed \u201cBig Pussy\u201d for his early days as a cat burglar \u2014\u00a0Pastore delivered a layered, unforgettable performance over the show\u2019s first several seasons. He could radiate loyalty and menace in the same scene, then reveal the private agony of a man who had chosen to wear a wire for the FBI. The character\u2019s arc culminated in the Season 2 finale, when Tony, Silvio, and Paulie execute him on a boat. In a preceding dream sequence, Pastore\u2019s lips and voice animated a talking fish that confessed his betrayal. <em>Sopranos<\/em> fans never forgot it. At meet-and-greets, they would bring him the Big Mouth Billy Bass plaques to sign, the novelty having become inseparable from the man who had given the phrase \u201csleeping with the fishes\u201d its most indelible television illustration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pastore\u2019s career after <em>The Sopranos<\/em> showed range beyond the archetype that made him famous. He voiced the octopus Luca in the animated <em>Shark Tale<\/em> (2004), appeared in Guy Ritchie\u2019s <em>Revolver<\/em> (2005), and acted on Broadway as well, first as Amos Hart in <em>Chicago<\/em> (2007) and later in Woody Allen\u2019s <em>Bullets Over Broadway<\/em> (2014). He hosted <em>The Wiseguy Show<\/em> on SiriusXM (produced by fellow <em>Sopranos<\/em> cast member Steven Van Zandt), fronted the rock band known as the Gangster Squad, launched a tomato sauce brand, and taught acting while co-running a theater company with Maureen Van Zandt. His appearances on reality shows like <em>Celebrity Fit Club<\/em> and <em>Celebrity Apprentice<\/em> showed that the famous TV tough guy could also be charmingly gregarious, quick-witted, and playful. He continued acting into his later years, never fully escaping typecasting but rarely seeming to mind it. In interviews, he returned often to the human core of his most famous character. <em>Sopranos<\/em> creator David Chase, he said, had written Big Pussy \u201cfor an actor who could play a tough guy but also could be sensitive.\u201d Pastore\u2019s own interpretation was simpler but no less impactful: \u201cI saw Big Pussy as a man with a big heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That same heart \u2014 generous with fans, loyal to colleagues, quick with a laugh \u2014 defined the man behind the nickname.
