Ken Martin\u2019s a passionate guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats have overperformed in the majority of state and federal elections since Trump began his second term. In April, Democrats expanded their majority on Wisconsin\u2019s Supreme Court. The next month, they held on to control of the Michigan state Senate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the party remains deeply divided over how to rebuild after its 2024 losses. An insurgent socialist wing, led by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, has toppled several incumbent Democrats this midterm cycle. Haley Stevens (D-MI) for the Democratic Senate nomination after regularly criticizing Israel and accusing it of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. The group was created by Martin last year to hammer out the party\u2019s official stance on Israel and Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe group continues to meet and has sketched out a plan to hold a series of sessions with affinity groups, with pollsters, policy experts, and others,\u201d Harris said. \u201cAnd members will have the opportunities to both listen to these sessions and contribute questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The party\u2019s divisions were even more apparent Thursday during a lengthy debate over a resolution calling for the formal abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Some members sought to amend the resolution to call for reforming ICE rather than abolishing it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve adopted resolutions to reform ICE in the past, including the spring meeting in New Orleans, we\u2019ve also just adopted a strong resolution from Chair Martin on the same topic,\u201d said Marge Hoffa, a Minnesota DNC member. \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t contradict ourselves by also introducing a resolution that would now call to abolish something that we have a well-established track record of calling to be drastically reformed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members at its 2025 summer meeting <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3785412\/democrats-new-deportation-messaging-abolish-ice-backlash\/\">denounced the Trump administration\u2019s deportation tactics<\/a> but stopped short of the calls to \u201cabolish ICE.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At an April meeting this year, the DNC approved a resolution calling for the replacement of the current structure of ICE to rein in the \u201clawless conduct of federal immigration enforcement agents.\u201d Another resolution, \u201cdemanding improvements and accountability in ICE Detention Facilities, and opposing abusive facilities\u201d was also passed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Thursday, the DNC\u2019s resolution committee approved the abolish ICE initiative in a 25-12 vote with one abstention. It now heads to the full DNC for a vote, which is expected either Friday or Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDemocrats are the open borders party,\u201d Natalie Baldassarre, the RNC\u2019s national press secretary, said shortly after the resolution advanced. \u201cTheir radical pro-criminal agenda puts law enforcement and the public at risk. President Trump secured our border, deported violent criminal aliens, and delivered the lowest murder rate in 125 years. If Democrats had any backbone they\u2019d vote down this dangerous proposal and put American citizens first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DNC members noted that the resolution is not legally binding but more of a symbolic tool for the Democratic base.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt the end of the day, this is a resolution passed by the Democratic National Committee,\u201d said Harini Krishnan, a California DNC member. \u201cIt does not have any legal binding on the DHS, but what it does do is send a message to voters who have moved left on this issue; it doesn\u2019t matter what state you live in in this country.
