Beirich is accused of living with a neo-nazi and sharing bank accounts with him while allegedly directing SPLC funds to pay him as an informant. Contrary to previous reports, Beirich was not the SPLC\u2019s chief financial officer; she is an academic with a Ph.D. in political science and has held research roles at the SPLC. She left the organization in 2019 amid internal turmoil and allegations of a purge, coinciding with a federal examination into SPLC\u2019s use of informants. Recent reports indicate that <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >federal authorities scrutinized bank accounts<\/a> associated with SPLC to pay informants, and Beirich was involved in the organization&#8217;s intelligence work before leaving. The  former SPLC executive is accused of living with a member of a neo-Nazi organization and sharing bank accounts with him while allegedly directing SPLC funds to him as payment for his work as an informant:<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>\n<div>\n<p>         <span>Image Credit<\/span>Screenshot       <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The addition of Beirich as a defendant makes the indictment stranger, rather than clearer, and suggests the presence of new and little-understood background themes in a continuing investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting the language of the indictment, news stories <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/FfWlO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">had initially<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/5xQOz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">described<\/a> Beirich as the SPLC\u2019s former chief financial officer (CFO). That doesn\u2019t appear to be true. Beirich is an academic, having written a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.lib.purdue.edu\/dissertations\/AAI9939315\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dissertation<\/a> on Spanish courts to earn her political science Ph.D. at Purdue University. She has no background in finance or accounting, and her own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/heidi-beirich-ph-d-5a068b1a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn page<\/a> lists a series of research and intelligence jobs at the SPLC rather than finance positions.<\/p>\n<p>In an email message, The Federalist asked the SPLC what positions Beirich had held with the organization. The organization didn\u2019t respond.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, Beirich appears to be an antagonist who broke with the SPLC during a period of internal crisis. Beirich left the organization in 2019, the same year that founder Morris Dees was <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20231031153703\/https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/investigations\/years-of-turmoil-and-complaints-led-the-southern-poverty-law-center-to-fire-its-founder-morris-dees\/2019\/04\/05\/58717bfc-50fa-11e9-8d28-f5149e5a2fda_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">forced out<\/a>. In that year, a long series of news stories <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/news-desk\/the-reckoning-of-morris-dees-and-the-southern-poverty-law-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">described chaos and anger<\/a> inside the SPLC, routinely depicting it as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/03\/25\/us\/morris-dees-leaves-splc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">troubled institution<\/a>. The Federalist sent an email message to Dees on Wednesday, asking him if he could discuss Beirich\u2019s role at the organization and provide background that might help to explain the indictment. He didn\u2019t respond.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/jOjR4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">story<\/a> published in the Daily Beast in October of 2019 framed Beirich\u2019s departure as an element of a purge: \u201cThe leader of the Southern Poverty Law Center\u2019s Intelligence Project is stepping down amid an ongoing leadership shakeup at the anti-hate organization.\u201d Note that the 2019 story on Beirich\u2019s departure didn\u2019t describe her as the CFO, instead describing her as the head of the organization\u2019s intelligence-gathering operation. That position would have put her squarely in the center of the SPLC\u2019s use of informants.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/tax-probe-southern-poverty-law-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more recent story<\/a> from CBS News, published this May, says that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/d-c-mayor-congress-must-open-a-probe-into-security-failures-at-u-s-capitol\/\" title=\"D.C. Mayor: Congress must open a probe into security failures at U.S. Capitol\">federal law enforcement<\/a> was running a criminal investigation into the SPLC\u2019s use of informants even as Beirich ran the organization\u2019s intelligence operation and was apparently about to be forced out of that job: \u201cAgents from IRS Criminal Investigation in 2019 and 2020 homed in on shell bank accounts that a former chief financial officer at the civil rights nonprofit opened to pay informants in exchange for intelligence about hate groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So Beirich appears to have been forced to leave her intelligence job at the SPLC during the period when federal investigators were asking questions about the use of informants in the organization\u2019s intelligence operations.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/extremism-expert-charged-case-targeting-southern-poverty-law-centers-u-rcna592198\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statements<\/a> to legacy media, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iversenproctor.com\/michael\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beirich\u2019s lawyer<\/a> has attacked the charges in the hyperbolic language that has already become familiar in the case: \u201cA free and fair society does not use the justice system to silence its political opponents.\u201d Seeking specifics by email, The Federalist asked Beirich\u2019s lawyer if Beirich denied the factual allegations contained in the indictment, or if she conceded the fact claims but regarded prosecution over her behavior as improper and political. He didn\u2019t respond.<\/p>\n<p>Beirich has due process rights, and is entitled to a presumption of innocence.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, cementing the appearance of antagonism toward her former employer, Beirich is a co-founder of a competing nonprofit organization that exists to do the same work the SPLC does. The Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHE), founded in 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalextremism.org\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says on its website<\/a> that it counters racism and bigotry by performing \u201cinvestigations and analysis\u201d regarding extremist groups. It\u2019s SPLC Jr., an SPLC spinoff, with former SPLC staff as <a href=\"https:\/\/globalextremism.org\/wendy-via\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">founders<\/a>. Corporate <a href=\"https:\/\/arc-sos.state.al.us\/cgi\/corpdetail.mbr\/detail?corp=000590891&#038;page=name&#038;file=&#038;type=ALL&#038;status=ALL&#038;place=ALL&#038;city=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">records<\/a> on file with the Alabama secretary of state show that GPAHE was founded in October of 2019, right as Beirich left the SPLC. So Beirich is competing with the SPLC for <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/nonprofits\/organizations\/843459993\/202620619349300957\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">donor funds<\/a> and media attention, while being charged with crimes in her former capacity as an SPLC official.<\/p>\n<p>The GPAHE website <a href=\"https:\/\/globalextremism.org\/our-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lists Beirich<\/a> as that organization\u2019s current chief strategy officer and cofounder. The Federalist asked GPAHE by email if Beirich remains an active executive at the organization, following her indictment. GPAHE didn\u2019t respond.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to say what all of this means, but it appears that the two defendants in the bank fraud indictment \u2014\u00a0the SPLC as an organization, and Beirich as the person who allegedly directed payments to informants while working there \u2014\u00a0are opponents who are likely to pursue antagonistic defense strategies. And it appears that the charges emerge from an old moment of institutional crisis, reflecting division with the SPLC that grew to a crescendo as the first federal investigation gained momentum.<\/p>\n<p>The charges appear to address actions that were internally contested during a period of institutional crisis, complicating the legacy media\u2019s framing of the story as a political prosecution of a leftist organization by a right-wing administration. <\/p>\n<p>That background will become clearer as Beirich\u2019s lawyer reveals his defense strategy in court. For now, no one is talking, no questions are being answered, and more indictments may be coming.
