The critique suggests CNN&#8217;s approach was a disingenuous attempt to exploit the incident to reinforce narratives about America&#8217;s racist past. Her death is undoubtedly tragic, and the circumstances are being investigated. But CNN appeared to be more interested in trying to insinuate her death is emblematic of racism in America by invoking the imagery of a racist lynching and by breezing past additional reported details surrounding Fortune\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<div id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-897372756\" class=\"d-flex justify-content-center fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 fdrlst__b89e9-entity-placement\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jimenez stressed that little is known about the circumstances and that police have not said whether her death is considered suspicious, nor have they identified a suspect. But police have also similarly <em>not <\/em>suggested it was racially motivated either \u2014 so naturally, CNN decided to make the crime about race (or at least try).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe raw imagery of a black person hanging from the tree in the American South evokes a very painful history,\u201d Jimenez said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jimenez then tried to reinforce the racist undertone by grouping Fortune\u2019s death with two other lynchings in the area before noting the other two individuals were reportedly to have died by suicide (and one of the deceased was white). <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two suicides and one death under current investigation do not establish a pattern of racism, but noting the three deaths together before emphasizing a \u201cpainful history\u201d in \u201cthe American South\u201d certainly seems like an attempt by CNN to create the appearance of racism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But even more telling are details Jimenez left out of his report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four days before CNN aired its report, local station <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlbt.com\/2026\/08\/08\/alleged-person-interest-death-investigation-tasia-fortune-arrested-unrelated-charge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WLBT reported<\/a> that Terence Anderson, described as \u201ca person of interest in connection with the death\u201d of Fortune, had been arrested on an unrelated charge. Anderson, who is also black, \u201chad been interviewed in connection with the death of Tasia Fortune,\u201d according to the report. Anderson \u201cdenied involvement with her death\u201d and has not been charged in relation to it, but reportedly said the two had been arguing. WLBT reports that police say the \u201ctwo were in a relationship\u201d though Anderson said this was not the case. Notably, Anderson reportedly lives near the crime scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be clear, Anderson has not been charged with Fortune\u2019s death. But these details are obviously important context to provide the audience as they try to make sense of Fortune\u2019s death. In fact, these details are far more relevant for Jimenez\u2019s report than invoking a history of lynching to try and make the point that America is a systemically racist country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nonetheless, CNN omitted this key context in what appears to be a disingenuous attempt to exploit Fortune\u2019s death to peddle a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >favorite legacy media claim<\/a> that America is a racist country with a racist past.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
