Leavitt, a new mother to a son and a daughter, has been recognized for balancing her high-pressure job with motherhood, frequently enough sharing her experiences of working while caring for her children. She has expressed that her decision to step down was driven by a desire to be the best mother she can be, acknowledging the sacrifices her career entails. While she\u2019s earned her spot as a rising star in the briefing room, her new role will likely be an even greater service to the country, as she hinted in a farewell message posted on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur country is facing an existential threat from an increasingly extremist Democrat Party that seeks to destroy everything great about America, and I believe it is incumbent upon all of us who care about this country to fight back against that threat,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/karolineleavitt\/status\/2087625708554100999\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cMy fight is entering a new phase, but it is far from over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leavitt, who assumed her role at the beginning of President Donald Trump\u2019s second term after working as his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/campaign-2024-an-early-look-at-the-possible-republican-contenders\/\" title=\"Campaign 2024: An Early Look At The Possible Republican Contenders\">press secretary<\/a> on the campaign trail, welcomed a son in July 2024 and a daughter in May, both of whom she shares with her husband Nicholas Riccio. After the birth of her son, Leavitt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/style\/power\/2025\/03\/24\/karoline-leavitt-trump-press-secretary\/\">took<\/a> three days off before an assassination attempt against then-candidate Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, brought her back from maternity leave.<\/p>\n<p>Leavitt has received praise for \u201cdoing it all,\u201d juggling one of the most high-pressure jobs in the world with motherhood of young children. Less than a year after her son\u2019s birth, she was <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MargoMartin47\/status\/1920565558388416938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pictured<\/a> at her desk bottle-feeding him in one arm while typing with the other. The photo went viral, with many cheering the \u201csuper mom\u201d and others expressing sympathy.<\/p>\n<p>Pamela Paul of The Wall Street Journal mentioned Leavitt\u2019s three-day postpartum absence admiringly in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/lifestyle\/relationships\/the-conservative-women-who-are-having-it-all-84077b73\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">piece<\/a> last year about \u201cThe Conservative Women Who Are \u2018Having It All.\u2019\u201d Paul presented women like Leavitt, Sen. Katie Britt, and White House adviser May Mailman as exemplars of right-leaning women who refused to choose between demanding, high-profile careers and raising their children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPregnant with her third child, she flies home to Houston on Friday nights to spend the weekend with her family,\u201d Paul wrote of Mailman. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople say to me, \u2018When you\u2019re home, I hope you can really connect with your kids\u2019 and I\u2019m like, \u2018You\u2019re crazy. When I\u2019m home, I\u2019m constantly attached to my phone,\u2019\u201d Mailman told her.<\/p>\n<p>Further down in the piece, Paul quoted a comment Leavitt made on <em>The Megyn Kelly Show<\/em> when her son was 7 months old. \u201cI would reject that you can\u2019t be a good mom and be good at your job,\u201d Leavitt had told Kelly.<\/p>\n<p>But in the full <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VEuwu7_J1q0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview<\/a>, she was more candid about the sacrifices her job demanded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a mother, you want to be with your child 24\/7, you have that maternal instinct,\u201d Leavitt said. \u201cBut also recognizing, like, I\u2019m doing this work for my son, and for all children, to make this country better. \u2026 It\u2019s also very, it\u2019s temporary, right? \u2026 This chaos of 24\/7 work is a temporary matter. And that\u2019s what at least I tell myself to get through these very long and hard days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was clear from the young mother\u2019s words and expressive delivery that she was pained by the long absences from her babies that her work requires. She speaks like someone who understands that hours spent working are hours not spent with her children, and that \u201chaving it all\u201d usually looks more like something having to give. <\/p>\n<p>That same self-awareness was evident in her farewell message on Wednesday. \u201cThe truth is,\u201d she wrote, \u201csince returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romper.com\/p\/how-being-a-stay-at-home-mom-changes-your-babys-brain-according-to-science-9814448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a> on the importance of a mother\u2019s time and attention to young children\u2019s development, but it\u2019s a need most mothers already understand innately. And most women want it for themselves, too \u2014 a 2019 study <a href=\"https:\/\/ifstudies.org\/ifs-admin\/resources\/newfinalifsresearchbrief-verbruggenwang-realhousewives.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a> that fewer than 3 in 10 married mothers chose full-time work as their ideal.<\/p>\n<p>As she departs, Leavitt should be commended for her impressive contributions in the briefing room. She should also be commended for choosing to prioritize the needs of her young children, even at the expense of pausing or redirecting her career for a season (though she will have no shortage of opportunities awaiting her when she\u2019s ready). And she deserves credit for the boldness and clarity with which she\u2019s explained her decision, too. <\/p>\n<p>It would be easy for a woman in her position to go along with the narrative many have projected onto her, that young mothers can devote themselves to the most demanding jobs in existence without any effect on their home life. Instead, Leavitt speaks clearly about the sacrifices her career has required of her family, and has put actions behind her words.
