Jared Polis enshrined abortion rights in the state constitution and supported animal welfare laws; New Mexico\u2019s Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham opposed abortion restrictions and funded animal shelters; and Vermont\u2019s Gov. Phil Scott passed laws protecting transgender surgeries and abortions, while also supporting animal rights initiatives. <\/p>\n<p>Expert commentary suggests that prioritizing animal rights over human rights reflects a troubling worldview, with some critics claiming it reveals a form of idolatry that elevates animals above human beings created in God\u2019s image &#8211; a notion condemned by G.K. A plethora of \u201cdoctors\u201d in white lab coats surrounded Healey as she inked the bill authorizing unwanted children to be <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/learn\/the-problem\/prenatal-development-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pulled apart by forceps or poisoned<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-bill-would-allow-doctors-to-lose-licenses-over-covid-misinformation-or-disinformation\/\" title=\"California ... Would Allow Doctors to Lose Licenses over COVID &#039;Misinformation or Disinformation&#039;\">licensed health care professional<\/a>, Lynn M.\u00a0Yee, who serves with the<strong> <\/strong>Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/news\/governor-healey-signs-legislation-strengthening-abortion-protections-in-massachusetts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">praised the new law<\/a>, saying that it \u201cprioritiz[ed] patient access to care,\u201d while ignoring the human patient inside a woman\u2019s body.<\/p>\n<p>A year ago, Healey and her supporters celebrated different bills that protected animal life better than human life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mspca.org\/animal-policy\/2024-sale-of-puppies-and-kittens-and-roadside-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">With the support of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals<\/a> (MSPCA), Healey approved one bill titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/malegislature.gov\/Laws\/SessionLaws\/Acts\/2024\/Chapter346\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">An Act Providing For the Humane Protection of Animals<\/a>.\u201d It prohibited permanently removing a puppy or kitten less than eight weeks of age from its mother and various unregulated sales of animals. The MSPCA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwlp.com\/news\/massachusetts\/these-new-laws-go-into-effect-in-massachusetts-that-help-protect-pets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commented<\/a> at the time that the bill was necessary to prevent \u201chealth problems\u201d in young animals.<\/p>\n<p>The second bill, titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/malegislature.gov\/Laws\/SessionLaws\/Acts\/2024\/Chapter345\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">An Act Prohibiting Inhumane Feline Declawing<\/a>,\u201d made it illegal to declaw a cat for any reason besides \u201crare situations such as cancer in the nail bed or other conditions that jeopardize the cat\u2019s health.\u201d Fines ranged from $1,000 for a first offense to more than $2,000 for repeat offenses. The MSPCA described the \u201cinhumane\u201d procedure as \u201cakin to amputating a person\u2019s fingertips at the first knuckle.\u201d The surgery can cause \u201cserious pain\u201d or \u201ccomplications,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>The state of Massachusetts currently celebrates removing a human child from its mother far before eight weeks and condones causing unborn children excruciating pain that ends in death. Furthermore, Massachusetts\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/info-details\/mass-general-laws-c209c-ss-28g#e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gestational surrogacy law<\/a> allows newborns to be taken from their gestational mother as early as birth, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/malegislature.gov\/Laws\/GeneralLaws\/PartII\/TitleIII\/Chapter210\/Section2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adoption law<\/a> gives the biological mother only four days with her child.<\/p>\n<p>Founder of Them Before Us <a href=\"https:\/\/thembeforeus.com\/katy-faust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Katy Faust<\/a> believes left-wing governors like Healey protect animals while discarding children \u201cbecause they want to have the appearance of compassion, as long as it does not infringe on their sexual liberty,\u201d she told The Federalist. \u201cAnimals do not interrupt your sexual identity, your sexual desire, your sexual agenda the way children do. So, they want the appearance of compassion and tolerance, but not at the cost of actually adjusting their life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before either the current abortion law or the animal cruelty laws reached Healey\u2019s desk, they passed through the House with the help of the same people. The Federalist found that more than 40 Democrat House representatives co-sponsored <a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/MA\/sponsors\/S2908\/2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/MA\/bill\/S2552\/2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">both <\/a>of the animal protection laws and also voted in favor of the<a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/MA\/rollcall\/H5595\/id\/1716027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> abortion law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In less than 90 days, Healey\u2019s abortion law will take effect and make Massachusetts <a href=\"https:\/\/sbaprolife.org\/lifesavinglaws#pro-abortion-laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the 10th state<\/a> to allow for abortion up to birth, joining Alaska, Colorado, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, and Vermont. Many of the governors of those radical states also passed various forms of animal protection laws.<\/p>\n<p>Former New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat, signed the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/jersey-passes-bill-protect-abortion-190543088.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Freedom of Reproductive Choice Act<\/a> into law\u00a0in 2022, shortly before the Dobbs decision. The law <a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/NJ\/text\/A6260\/id\/2468338\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">provided <\/a>\u201cthe right to contraception, the right to terminate a pregnancy, and the right to carry a pregnancy to term\u201d to all New Jerseyans. The wording of the bill also made abortion up to birth a state constitutional \u201cright.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Murphy also passed a law banning \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pub.njleg.gov\/bills\/2018\/PL18\/141_.HTM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">use of wild or exotic animals in traveling animal acts<\/a>,\u201d titled \u201cNosey\u2019s law\u201d after an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/new-jersey-ban-noseys-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">abused show elephant<\/a>. He also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.troysingleton.com\/governor_murphy_signs_legislation_enhancing_animal_protections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passed a bill <\/a>\u201cprohibiting the leasing of dogs and cats\u201d with a fine of up to $ 10,000 or more and labeled creating animal fighting gear as a third-degree criminal offence. <a href=\"https:\/\/aldf.org\/project\/prohibiting-the-sale-of-cosmetics-tested-on-animals-new-jersey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Another bill <\/a>he signed prohibited \u201cthe sale of cosmetics that were developed or manufactured using animal tests,\u201d because the testing caused \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/aldf.org\/project\/prohibiting-the-sale-of-cosmetics-tested-on-animals-new-jersey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suffering needlessly<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Current Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer <a href=\"https:\/\/reproductivefreedomforall.org\/news\/reproductive-freedom-for-all-michigan-applauds-governor-gretchen-whitmers-final-state-of-the-state-address-and-fierce-advocacy-for-reproductive-freedom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passed various pro-abortion laws and<\/a> \u201chelped secure the historic passage of Michigan\u2019s Prop 3, which enshrined the right to reproductive freedom \u2014 including abortion \u2014 in the state constitution,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/reproductivefreedomforall.org\/news\/reproductive-freedom-for-all-michigan-applauds-governor-gretchen-whitmers-final-state-of-the-state-address-and-fierce-advocacy-for-reproductive-freedom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to Reproductive Freedom for All<\/a>. She also passed a 2023 law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Laws\/MCL?objectName=mcl-287-388a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">that required lab cats and dogs to be put up for adoption before euthanasia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Colorado Gov. Jared Polis has signed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradopolitics.com\/2025\/04\/24\/colorado-gov-jared-polis-signs-bill-to-enshrine-abortion-rights-in-state-constitution-dc3dbae9-8169-4e96-bc95-c10497381b47\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bills enshrining abortion laws<\/a> in the state\u2019s constitution and allowing taxpayer-funded killing of babies. He also signed a bill<a href=\"https:\/\/governorsoffice.colorado.gov\/governor\/news\/governor-polis-signs-bill-law-protecting-colorado-animal-welfare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> protecting show animals from harm<\/a>. \u201cIn Colorado, we advocate for everyone, people and animals alike,\u201d he said while praising the bill, adding that these animals \u201cdeserve fair treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham applauded the state Supreme Court\u2019s 2025 decision to strike down abortion bans, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.state.nm.us\/2025\/01\/09\/governor-applauds-new-mexico-supreme-court-ruling-striking-down-local-abortion-restrictions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saying<\/a>, \u201cLet me be crystal clear: as long as I\u2019m governor, New Mexico will fight any attempt to limit reproductive healthcare access.\u201d That same year, she <a href=\"https:\/\/losalamosreporter.com\/2025\/11\/05\/new-state-funding-reaches-animal-shelters-and-spay-neuter-providers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">created<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/Sessions\/25%20Regular\/final\/HB0113.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a $5 million program that aimed to reduce animal euthanasia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, Republican Vermont Gov. Phil Scott <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/law\/vermont-protects-abortion-transgender\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passed two bills<\/a> shielding transgender mutilation surgeries and abortion in the state, yet <a href=\"https:\/\/vtdigger.org\/2018\/05\/24\/coyote-hunting-contests-banned-vermont\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">refused to veto<\/a> a bill banning \u201ccoyote-killing contests\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/legislative-alerts\/vermont-new-division-animal-welfare-established\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">established a division of animal welfare <\/a>within the state\u2019s Department of Public Safety. Project Coyote urged Scott to pass the coyote bill <a href=\"https:\/\/projectcoyote.org\/update-urge-governor-scott-to-sign-h-636-into-law-to-ban-coyote-killing-contests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">because the hunting practice<\/a> \u201cperpetuate[s] a culture of violence and send the message to children that life has little value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Faust explained to the Federalist why human rights seem to fall when animal rights are prioritized. \u201cSomething is going to take the top value spot, and if it is animals, then it won\u2019t be humans,\u201d she said, \u201cyou just have to choose what is at the top of your hierarchy of values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most conservatives have no issue with supporting laws that generally protect animals. One poll by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataforprogress.org\/blog\/2022\/8\/2\/voters-demand-farm-animal-protections-from-both-politicians-and-companies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Data for Progress<\/a> found that 83 percent of Democrats and 77 percent of Republicans believe \u201cpreventing animal cruelty is a matter of personal moral concern.\u201d Another animal treatment study found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/about-us\/press-releases\/new-aspca-research-shows-large-bipartisan-majority-americans-support-federal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">77 percent of voters<\/a> in 2022 supported federal legislation to end puppy mills, which participate in unethical breeding practices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a problem if you are doing things that are cruel to animals,\u201d Faust noted,\u201d but if you\u2019re going to elevate that above the rights of a child to not be burned in utero or dismembered prior to birth, that reveals something about your world view \u2026 value[ing] the discomfort of animals above the lives of children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Placing animal rights above those of man, the being made in the image of God, is a massive perversion of the created order. G.K.
