And their latest hatchet job against Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito is no exception. <\/p>\n<p>Brought to readers by the foreign-based Guardian, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/aug\/11\/samuel-alito-oil-gas-assets-supreme-court-analysis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hit piece<\/a> centers around an analysis by a hyper-partisan left-wing judicial group of Alito\u2019s purported financial gains from his fossil fuel-related investments over the past 20 years. As evidenced by the article\u2019s disingenuous framing, the point of this \u201creporting\u201d is to try and paint a cloud of impropriety over the justice\u2019s participation in an upcoming SCOTUS case involving several oil companies.<\/p>\n<p>In <em>Suncor Energy, Inc. v. County Commissioners of Boulder County<\/em>, the high court will <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/02\/23\/scotus-takes-up-oil-companies-challenge-to-colorado-citys-climate-lawfare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">consider<\/a> a lawsuit brought by Boulder, Colorado, officials against the Exxon Mobil Corporation and three Suncor Energy businesses. The left-wing challengers are seeking damages from the companies based on allegations that their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/19-states-launch-investigation-into-major-banks-for-pushing-esg-policies\/\" title=\"19 States Launch Investigation Into Major Banks for Pushing ESG Policies\">fossil fuel-related activities<\/a> are contributing to \u201cclimate change,\u201d which the officials argue harms their residents and property. <\/p>\n<p>Quoting from the left-wing group\u2019s (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/court-accountability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Court Accountability<\/a>) Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withoutprecedent.info\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">co-founder<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/person\/lisa-graves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lisa Graves<\/a>, author Dharna Noor tries to advance the narrative that Alito can\u2019t be trusted to be impartial in the <em>Suncor<\/em> case due to his investments in the energy sector. But there\u2019s just one teeny, tiny problem that even The Guardian was forced to admit: There is no evidence to suggest that Alito currently has financial interests in the companies involved in the case.<\/p>\n<p>Following leftist calls to recuse himself from the dispute earlier this year, a Supreme Court spokeswoman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/supreme-court\/justice-alito-pushes-back-calls-recuse-major-supreme-court-climate-cas-rcna345305\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> NBC News that Alito \u201cdoes not have a financial interest in any party\u201d in the matter, and that the court\u2019s legal counsel told him that \u201chis recusal is not required.\u201d While the Bush appointee reportedly owned ExxonMobil stock back in 2004, the same NBC News report confirmed that the Bush appointee \u201cdoes not [currently] own stock in either ExxonMobil or Suncor Energy, according to his most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sanity.io\/files\/pito4za5\/production\/13ac36cde5d274de415148b9ce2e6130d6e4e6a3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">financial disclosure report, which was filed last year<\/a>\u201d \u2014 a point Court Accountability\u2019s analysis also <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/13ioEWSdOM7Nhi5rBYOV3kebUr5V0fYF8\/edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conceded<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Even as she subsequently tried to insinuate wrongdoing by Alito for \u201cvoting in favor of fossil fuel interests\u201d in recent SCOTUS decisions, Noor ultimately acknowledged that the justice has done due diligence in recusing himself from cases in which he has a financial conflict. This includes his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/supreme-court\/justice-alito-pushes-back-calls-recuse-major-supreme-court-climate-cas-rcna345305\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recusal<\/a> from an earlier version of the Colorado case in 2023 because, according to the court\u2019s spokeswoman, \u201cit was considered at the same time as other cases where the justice did have a financial interest in the parties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some may find it baffling that The Guardian and Graves are up in arms over Alito\u2019s fossil fuel investments while remaining simultaneously unbothered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/09\/28\/propublica-smear-of-justice-thomas-reveals-a-partisan-double-standard-for-scotus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conflicts of interest<\/a> involving Democrat-appointed justices or the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/08\/10\/national-academy-of-sciences-pulls-biased-climate-guide-used-to-advise-judges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">growing controversy<\/a> surrounding Elena Kagan in the same <em>Suncor<\/em> case. But in the end, it\u2019s not that hard to understand.<\/p>\n<p>These left-wing crisis actors aren\u2019t really outraged about Alito\u2019s finances any more than they were about <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/01\/07\/democrats-ethics-smears-against-thomas-and-alito-are-so-embarrassing-they-buried-their-own-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clarence Thomas<\/a>\u2019 or any of the other <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/25\/politicos-hit-on-neil-gorsuch-is-another-transparent-attempt-to-delegitimize-scotus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conservative<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/30\/rolling-stones-hit-piece-on-amy-coney-barrett-is-even-dumber-than-you-think\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">justices<\/a>. What\u2019s actually driving their anger is that Alito is ruling on cases involving energy policy (and a host of other issues) in ways they don\u2019t like.<\/p>\n<p>Time and again, Alito and his conservative colleagues have rebuked the left\u2019s climate lawfare in cases before the bench. Rather than advance what they want the law <em>to be<\/em>, they\u2019re interpreting what the law <em>says<\/em>, and ruling accordingly. <\/p>\n<p>For the left, that isn\u2019t how the judiciary is supposed to work. Under their worldview, the Supreme Court is nothing more than another lever of power to be weaponized to ram their agenda down Americans\u2019 throats \u2014 the law\u2019s original meaning be damned. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s because Alito and many of his conservative colleagues reject this approach that they are assaulted with the type of disgraceful media hit pieces above. The left can\u2019t control the court, so they\u2019re doing everything in their power to destroy it.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to their claims otherwise, the media and other Democrats aren\u2019t concerned about Supreme Court \u201cethics\u201d or \u201ctransparency.\u201d It is, as it\u2019s always been, about power. <\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Shawn Fleetwood is a staff writer for The Federalist and a graduate of the University of Mary Washington.
