Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that the U.S. will act as the secretariat, based in the Office of Global Affairs at the Department of health and Human Services. Hungary has been recognized for its stewardship of the declaration after the U.S. withdrew under President Biden.<\/p>\n<p>Originally signed in 2020 during the Trump management by 34 countries, the declaration opposes promoting abortion as family planning and emphasizes national sovereignty in abortion policies, protections for children, and women\u2019s rights to education, healthcare, and leadership. The U.S. initially was a co-sponsor but withdrew in early 2021 before rejoining in January 2025 after efforts to reverse previous withdrawal. Currently, 39 countries are signatories, including recent additions Burundi and Chad, even though some signatories, such as Iraq, South Sudan, and Saudi Arabia, face criticism for their authoritarian or restrictive governments.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States is set to take the lead in the Geneva Consensus Declaration, an <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/international-treaties\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"944\">international<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/international-treaties\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"944\">agreement<\/a> focused on promoting women\u2019s health, strengthening families, and affirming the protection of human life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Secretary of State <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/marco-rubio\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"51\">Marco Rubio <\/a>and Health and Human Services Secretary<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/robert-f-kennedy-jr\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"8011\"> Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/a> announced Wednesday that the U.S. would serve as secretariat of the declaration, with the effort housed in the Office of Global Affairs at the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/health-and-human-services\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"364\">Department of Health and Human Services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two secretaries also praised <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/hungary\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"3319\">Hungary<\/a> for its stewardship of the declaration after the U.S. withdrew from the agreement under former President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"471\">Joe Biden<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHungary has faithfully safeguarded the Declaration and its principles, and we are grateful for its leadership and commitment to expanding the Declaration\u2019s signatories,\u201d Rubio and Kennedy <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/united-states-geneva-consensus-declaration-secretariat.html\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Geneva Consensus Declaration was adopted in 2020 under the first <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/trump-administration\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"339\">Trump administration<\/a> and was initially signed by representatives of 34 countries. The agreement was spearheaded by then-Secretary of State <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mike-pompeo\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"974\">Mike Pompeo <\/a>and is explicitly opposed to treating abortion as a method of family planning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement states that \u201cin no case should abortion be promoted as a method of family planning\u201d and maintains that abortion policy should be determined at the national or local level through each country\u2019s legislative process. It also reaffirms protections for children before and after birth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The declaration promotes women\u2019s contributions to their families and societies while affirming women\u2019s rights to education, economic resources, political participation, employment, and leadership. It also calls for access to comprehensive healthcare and emphasizes the protection of human life and the family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. was among the declaration\u2019s original cosponsors, along with Brazil, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia, and Uganda. Brazil later withdrew as a cosponsor, while Guatemala was added. Russia joined the declaration in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biden withdrew the U.S. from the declaration in early 2021, and his administration subsequently encouraged other countries to leave the agreement. Hungary then assumed responsibility for the secretariat, with the Budapest-based Maria Kopp Institute carrying out much of the work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Trump administration moved to reverse that decision after returning to office.
