It notes that recent economic data show inflation slowing down, and gas prices have fluctuated but remain a concern. The author supports ongoing military efforts and criticizes political responses, mentioning President Trump’s focus on election security, the economy, and immigration enforcement amid limited support from Democrats and some Republicans.

The narrative emphasizes the struggles of ordinary Americans facing rising living costs, exemplified by the increasing price of a simple burrito, which has gone from $8.50 to about $13 in recent years-a fact blamed on inflation and government monetary policies. The author criticizes political figures and commentators who dismiss these hardships with insensitive remarks, highlighting social media debates were opinions ranged from mocking to sympathetic.

There’s a strong call for understanding and acknowledging the financial pain experienced by manny, especially younger generations, rather than trivializing their struggles. The piece criticizes the tendency of some conservatives to attack young people’s economic concerns, arguing that dismissive attitudes undermine political unity and turnout in elections. It underscores that many Americans are managing with slim margins and that simple hopes for affordable daily essentials should not be viewed as luxury.

the text advocates for honest acknowledgment of economic challenges and urges politicians and influencers to treat these issues with respect, emphasizing that all generations face unique struggles and that inflating negativity only harms efforts to retain support and achieve political goals.

Things in America have been looking better over the last 18 months, if you ask me.

New numbers out Wednesday morning showed that inflation slowed down last month. Gas prices started the year at a good, affordable level. They have gone up and down since the fight with Iran began.

I think that fight was and is a righteous one, but we need to wrap it up over there.

President Donald Trump is working hard on election security, the economy, and countless other issues that will directly and indirectly affect American life in the coming months and years.

He gets little help from Senate Republicans and none from Democrats.

He is also removing illegal immigrants who have no business being here, with constant friction.

Every removal of one of these people means less pressure on housing and public services.

Still, the government printed trillions of dollars over the last six years. That diluted the value of every dollar every American earns.

I blame Democrats. I blame bad policy. I blame many people in the GOP, too. I blame a lot of people.

The one group I do not blame is the people who feel the pain every day. Life feels hard and never-ending for many of them, and that’s because it is.

You might be one of those people. If you are not, you almost certainly know someone living paycheck to paycheck, just trying to stay above water.

Over the last two weeks, the cost-of-living discussion has blown up on X, and I have seen some really out-of-touch posts from some people I really respect.

I will not name most of them. I do not attack fellow conservatives unless they have really earned it. The Democratic Party is the real enemy of affordability and every other issue facing most folks.

But I will one example from Marc Thiessen during the Great $20 Burrito Debate of 2026.

Andrew Kolvet with Turning Point USA posted this last week:

One of our TPUSA college students gave me his take on affordability:

“A burrito shouldn’t cost $20.”

Yeah, a lot of this is a hangover from Covid and Biden-era inflation, but the lived experience is the same: It just feels like basic things cost too much. https://t.co/GEvmbea57o

— Andrew Kolvet (@AndrewKolvet) August 4, 2026

“One of our TPUSA college students gave me his take on affordability: ‘A burrito shouldn’t cost $20.’

“A lot of this is a hangover from Covid and Biden-era inflation, but the lived experience is the same: It just feels like basic things just cost too much.”

Thiessen answered: “Cry me a river. Hard work, saving money, having a plan, and being careful with how you spend are all smart bits of advice. The “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” idea still applies. This is America. Anyone can make it if they really want to.

I tell my teen that almost daily.

But two things can be true at once. Hard work and calculated choices will help you get ahead — and people who work 40 or 60 hours a week are not wrong for wanting a simple item like a burrito for lunch.

When did wanting middle-of-the-road Tex-Mex in the greatest country on the planet become perceived as some kind of luxury?

My own weekly burrito costs me about $13 now, and I never miss it. Five years ago that burrito was $8.50 at the same place. I blamed Joe Biden for that first price increase, and I am not happy that it keeps going up.

A lot of people are not doing OK. It’s also insulting. We need to beat socialism and keep both houses of Congress.

The bottom line is that life in America costs a lot at the moment and the margins for error are slim.

Pretending everything is A-OK is disingenuous. We have to admit that prices for everyday things are way too high and explain how we are going to address them.

Grandfatherly anecdotes about what the struggle looked like 30 years ago do not help someone who just spent $300 at a Walmart to feed their kids semi-nutritious foods.

I had roommates 20 years ago. People had roommates long before that. Every generation figures out early adult life its own way.

But people 30 and under face extra problems that are being dismissed, and I feel for them. An entire generation is being painted as kooks, and it is absolutely disgraceful.

AI is threatening entire careers, unchecked immigration has erased the cultural homogeneity previous generations took for granted, and shopping for basic commodities now arguably qualifies as a large purchase for countless people who live in homes they can’t qualify to purchase.

Buying power has dropped over recent years, and the price of just about everything else has gone up.

“Stop being poor” is certainly a message, but it’s the wrong one.
