Unlike Defund-the-Police Democrats, President Trump will always stand with our law enforcement officers and deliver safer American neighborhoods.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Major Cities Chiefs Association found the homicide rate declined in several major cities, including by 65% in Newark, New Jersey, and 44% in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Department of Justice spokesperson told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that \u201cViolent crime is falling because this administration is prosecuting it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPresident Trump and Attorney General Blanche have empowered U.S. Attorneys to pursue violent offenders and given them the full resources of the Department to do it,\u201d the DOJ spokesperson said. \u201cWhen you hold criminals accountable, crime goes down \u2014 these numbers prove it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump\u2019s press conference also coincides with the White House underscoring the accomplishments of the president\u2019s D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force this week.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The task force, which marked its first year on Tuesday, was started after Trump declared a national emergency following last summer\u2019s violent carjacking of Edward Coristine, a former Department of Government Efficiency aide better known as \u201cBig Balls,\u201d prompting the president to federalize and deploy the National Guard in the district. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The task force\u2019s achievements include more than 16,000 arrests, including the arrests of 35 homicide suspects and more than 100 alleged gang members, in addition to over 3,200 narcotics-related arrests, almost 2,000 illegal guns seized, and 25 missing children located and returned home, according to the White House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Council on Criminal Justice senior fellow Thaddeus Johnson described approaching Trump\u2019s task force with an open mind and said the decrease in violent crime is part of a broader trend because there is not \u201can unlimited stock of would-be offenders who are willing to pull the trigger.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Council on Criminal Justice itself published data on Tuesday that demonstrated that <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/counciloncj.org\/crime-in-washington-dc-what-you-need-to-know\/\">most instances of violent crime had decreased in Washington during the first half of 2026<\/a>, except for aggravated assault and gun assault, which increased.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn places that have both had federal interventions and not, we\u2019ve seen declines,\u201d Johnson told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cBut I also think that one big thing is policing has gotten smarter. Community groups have gotten smarter. We will share intel between enforcement and non-enforcement groups, enforcement groups across jurisdictions. Of course, you\u2019ve had technology that has come on and made that data sharing a lot easier and helped close cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Johnson added that the National Guard\u2019s deployment in Washington could have had a \u201cdeterrent effect,\u201d though that may not be \u201csustainable\u201d when members return home. The <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/4681559\/one-year-later-dc-residents-trump-national-guard-deployment\/\">reported<\/a> Tuesday that the National Guard\u2019s presence has been met with mixed reactions among locals, with some residents welcoming their presence on the streets.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen the local leaders are supported by the federal government, we\u2019ve always seen those types of task forces have worked wonders,\u201d he said. \u201cReally, the next question is how can we sustain it? We know that crackdowns can be like a diet for crime, right? The thing is, I already had a diet. What\u2019s the working out? What\u2019s the meal plan? What\u2019s those things that you can sustain it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump\u2019s crime record is generally one of the president\u2019s political strengths. Republicans have typically been the more trusted party on crime and public safety and have rode the issue to major victories in recent years, including a number of shock congressional upsets in New York during the 2022 midterm cycle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But his record may not be enough to stem the tide given voters\u2019 economic concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLowered crime numbers are more helpful when they address a rising concern especially during the summer months,\u201d Marist Institute for Public Opinion Director Lee Miringoff told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cBut the economy, headed by rising prices and the cost of gas, remain the dominant public concerns for the midterm elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not only in Miringoff\u2019s polling. This week\u2019s <em>Economist<\/em>-YouGov tracking poll identified that inflation\/prices was the top voter concern of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/d3nkl3psvxxpe9.cloudfront.net\/documents\/econTabReport_pKJG0WT.pdf\">31% of respondents<\/a>, in comparison to 3% who told pollsters it was crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republican strategist Doug Heye contended, too, that Trump could be a victim of his own success when it comes to crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen problems are solved or reduced, they tend to lose focus in voters\u2019 minds,\u201d Heye told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cTrump has been correct [when] he\u2019s sort of complained that no one\u2018s talking about the border anymore. So the reduced crime rate is something he definitely should be talking about.
