The program, as it is, remains popular across the ideological spectrum.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-1\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-1\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-15\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to an <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ffyf.org\/2025\/04\/29\/new-poll-support-for-head-start\/\">April 2025 survey<\/a> from the Republican polling firm UpONE Insights on behalf of First Five Years Fund, 72% of voters said federal funding for childcare and early learning programs for families with low incomes is a good investment of taxpayer money, while 79% of voters said they support Head Start \u2014 including 73% of Republicans, 74% of Trump voters,\u00a076% of Independents, and 86% of Democrats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Health and Human Services Secretary <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/robert-f-kennedy\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"2316\">Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/a> claimed the overhaul would reduce red tape, increase the number of children that Head Start serves, and save the federal government more than $2 billion. But Republican groups like the Heritage Foundation have spent years claiming that Head Start is not an effective program for long-term educational outcomes and should be eliminated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Affordability remains a chief issue for voters, especially as the cost of living increases due to the war in Iran. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), ranking member of the House Committee on Appropriations and a longtime champion of Head Start, accused the Trump administration of quietly starving Head Start and hoping it withers on its own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe administration claims they are \u2018cutting red tape\u2019. Jahana Hayes (D-CT)\u00a0led 188 members of Congress in requesting $14.27 billion for Head Start earlier this year, but the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> could not find a public statement on her X accounts or official House website about the new HHS proposals. A Hayes spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment about the issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silence on folding Head Start into Democrats\u2019 midterm message is notable given that some of the party\u2019s most progressive voices outside of Congress have won primaries or elections on an affordability message that continues to resonate with voters. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a universal \u201c2-K\u201d free childcare initiative in March, and this month, along with Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY), he rolled out the first 2,000 spots for toddlers for classes beginning in the fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New Mexico recently launched a universal childcare program under Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham\u2019s (D-NM) tenure, which would save 40,000 children and their families about $12,000 per child.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/4681510\/trump-order-shrinking-childhood-vaccination-schedule\/\">TRUMP SIGNS ORDER SHRINKING CHILDHOOD VACCINATION SCHEDULE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, the Democratic National Committee claimed the party would continue to focus on lowering costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWorking families are already struggling to get by in Donald Trump\u2019s economy as prices continue to soar.
