The posts emerged during a debate over legislation targeting drag performances near children, which Holscher criticized. In one post from March 2023, Holscher said she had no idea if Jesus was trans, gay, or straight, and questioned the implications of suggesting Jesus is “less than” if not straight. She also shared an image of Jesus with children, asking, “So, what about this?” The legislation in question aimed to classify certain drag shows as obscene to minors, but it ultimately failed to pass.

Republicans have seized on these posts to portray Holscher as radical, with GOP nominee Ty Masterson accusing her of mocking Jesus to defend drag performances for children. Holscher’s campaign defends her, criticizing Masterson for using old social media content to distract from issues like property taxes.

The controversy intensifies as Holscher moves into the general election, where Kansas’s tight political landscape-with a significant GOP voter advantage-makes her race challenging. The primary victory over a Kelly-backed opponent also signifies a broader shift in Democratic candidates’ scrutiny regarding past comments on religion and gender. Similar debates have arisen in othre races, such as texas, where Democratic candidate James Talarico faced criticism for his 2021 remark that “God is nonbinary.”

This situation exemplifies ongoing political strategies where both parties leverage cultural and social issues, especially related to gender and religion, to energize their bases and attack opponents. the Kansas race is seen as a key contest in determining whether Democrats can retain control of the governor’s mansion amid a predominantly Republican state.

Kansas Democratic gubernatorial nominee Cindy Holscher is facing Republican attacks over resurfaced social media posts in which she entertained the possibility that Jesus Christ could have been transgender, injecting a culture-war issue into one of the country’s most competitive gubernatorial races.

Holscher, a state senator who won the Democratic nomination last week, made the comments on social media in 2023 during a debate over proposed Kansas legislation targeting drag performances in front of children.
