The survey reveals that 59% of voters support ending this “firewall,” with around 37% favoring a case-by-case approach and 27% advocating active cooperation with the AfD. Over time, support for collaboration has increased, while rejection has declined. Mainstream parties like the CDU and SPD are increasingly concerned about the afd’s rising popularity, especially in Eastern Germany, were it leads polls and may secure an outright majority in upcoming regional elections.CDU leader Friedrich Merz opposes cooperation with the far right, citing Germany’s history and the dangers of such ideologies.

Some within the CDU have begun to consider engagement, especially as support for the AfD is driven in part by opposition to mass migration. The poll shows 71% of Germans support stricter border controls to address irregular immigration, and debates are ongoing about whether to pursue a more pragmatic approach in light of electoral gains and public opinion. Additionally, while 59% of Germans favor European-wide solutions to migration issues, this view is declining, and there is still significant support for national policies, especially amid recent tensions like the influx of migrants into Spanish-controlled Ceuta. the political landscape in Germany is shifting, with increased discussion about cooperation with the AfD and strategies to address migration and national security concerns.

Results from a recent poll of German voters showed that a significant majority opposes the long-standing “firewall” policy that prohibits major German political parties from working with the right-wing Alternative for Germany, or AfD, party.

German polling firm Infratest dipmap, in a survey conducted between Aug. 3-5, found that 59% of eligible voters in the country support abandoning the political “firewall” and working with the AfD.
