No child has two moms,\u201d which faced meaningful backlash, including accusations of promoting anti-LGBTQ rhetoric. Faust argues that the billboard simply acknowledged an obvious biological fact-that children naturally have a mother and a father-and that efforts to deny this reality have been part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ben-shapiros-guide-to-huckleberry-finn\/\" title=\"Ben Shapiro\u2019s Guide To Huckleberry Finn\">larger cultural shift<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She traces this shift back to legal and societal changes beginning with the Supreme court\u2019s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which redefined marriage and subsequently influenced how parenthood is viewed legally and culturally. Reforms like the 2017 Pavan v. Smith decision and the uniform Parentage Act replaced traditional notions of &#8220;mother&#8221; and &#8220;father&#8221; with sex-neutral terms, treating parenthood increasingly as a legal status instead of rooted in biological reality.<\/p>\n<p>Educational materials and entertainment also adapted by removing references to biological parents, portraying mothers and fathers as interchangeable, while the reproductive industry expanded to support same-sex and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-eyes-expanding-welfare-state-overturning-clinton-era-reform\/\" title=\"Biden Eyes Expanding Welfare State, Overturning Clinton-Era Reform\">single parent families<\/a> through donation and surrogacy. Faust emphasizes that thes changes have led children raised in same-sex families to experience confusion, longing, and guilt over the absence or loss of one biological parent.<\/p>\n<p>She contends that telling children the truth-that every child has a mother and a father-is more compassionate than depicting biological connections as optional or interchangeable. Faust concludes that the culture\u2019s efforts to erase biological realities are harmful to children and that acknowledging these truths is essential for their well-being.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Last month, my nonprofit \u201cThem Before Us\u201d placed 19 billboards across Tennessee, Alabama, and Ohio stating an obvious biological fact: \u201cNo child has two dads. No child has two moms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sign faced immediate\u00a0 backlash and condemnation from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limaohio.com\/top-stories\/2026\/07\/24\/billboard-touts-heterosexual-family-rejects-gay-adoption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local news outlets<\/a>. Social media <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DefiantLs\/status\/2080418176446468287\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">influencers<\/a> denounced it as \u201canti-LGBTQ rhetoric.\u201d We were accused of hurting children with same-sex parents who might see the billboards on their way to school \u2014 or on their way to family court, if their \u201ctwo moms\u201d had fallen prey to the unusually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.them.us\/story\/lesbian-marriages-weddings-divorce-rate-study-reasons-why\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high<\/a> lesbian divorce rate.<\/p>\n<p>These accusations get everything backwards. The billboard didn\u2019t create pain for children. It acknowledged it.<\/p>\n<p>The furious reaction to two simple sentences reveals just how much effort has gone into teaching Americans to reject the most basic fact of human existence: every child comes from one mother and one father. That truth is not a Christian doctrine or a conservative slogan. It is a human universal \u2014 something every civilization and every religion agreed upon until, historically speaking, about five minutes ago.<\/p>\n<p>Yet suppressing that self-evident reality has required an extraordinary cultural project, waged through law, education, entertainment, and the fertility industry, all in the name of \u201cequality.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How America Was Taught To Forget Biology<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The ink on <em>Obergefell v. Hodges<\/em> was barely dry before leftist activists moved beyond redefining marriage to redefining parenthood.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, the Supreme Court\u2019s decision in <em>Pavan v. Smith<\/em> permitted states to place the spouse of a biological parent on a <a href=\"https:\/\/firstthings.com\/obergefell-and-the-right-to-other-peoples-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">birth certificate<\/a> as though he or she were the child\u2019s natural parent. The legal significance extended far beyond paperwork. Birth certificates no longer simply recorded biological reality. They increasingly reflected adult relationships.<\/p>\n<p>That same year, the Uniform Law Commission approved a revised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uniformlaws.org\/committees\/community-home?CommunityKey=c4f37d2d-4d20-4be0-8256-22dd73af068f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Uniform Parentage Act (UPA)<\/a>, now adopted in whole or in part by more than ten states. The revision systematically replaced \u201cmother\u201d and \u201cfather\u201d with sexless terms and expanded legal pathways for unrelated adults to obtain parental status through assisted reproductive technology.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t blame Kathy Hochul for replacing \u201cmother\u201d and \u201cfather\u201d with \u201cgestating\u201d and \u201cnon-gestating\u201d parents in New York. Blame the Uniform Parentage Act. <\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t merely a change in legal terminology. It represented a fundamental shift away from viewing children as naturally connected to the man and woman who created them and toward viewing parenthood as a legal status the state could assign to any and every adult. Moms and dads were vanishing from law.<\/p>\n<p>But children don\u2019t naturally believe things that contradict what they can plainly observe. They have to be taught.<\/p>\n<p>Schools quickly joined the effort. Before <em>Obergefell<\/em>, the National Education Association encouraged sensitivity towards different family circumstances while still treating mothers and fathers as the ordinary framework of family life. Mother\u2019s Day and Father\u2019s Day remained uncontroversial fixtures of the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>After <em>Obergefell<\/em>, the emphasis changed. The NEA\u2019s 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/professional-excellence\/student-engagement\/tools-tips\/checklist-support-lgbtq-students-during-distance-learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">checklist<\/a> encouraged teachers to replace \u201cmom and dad\u201d with terms such as \u201cfamily\u201d or \u201ccaring adult\u201d and to avoid language that assumed children had mothers and fathers. What the courts de-sexed in law, schools increasingly de-sexed in the imagination of children.<\/p>\n<p>Entertainment followed the same script. According to queer activist organization <a href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/publications\/where-we-are-on-tv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GLAAD<\/a>, LGBTQ representation on television expanded dramatically after <em>Obergefell<\/em>. Preschoolers met families with two mothers on <a href=\"https:\/\/cbn.com\/news\/news\/disneys-doc-mcstuffins-targets-preschoolers-pro-lesbian-message-2-moms-episode\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Doc McStuffins<\/em><\/a>. Elementary school children watched <em>The Loud House<\/em> and <em>The Bravest Knight<\/em>. Teenagers encountered <em>The Fosters<\/em>, centered on two married mothers raising biological, foster, and adopted children.<\/p>\n<p>The message was remarkably consistent: mothers and fathers are interchangeable. Meanwhile, the fertility industry stood ready to profit from the new demand. <\/p>\n<p>Contrary to early predictions, marriage erasure did not produce a surge of same-sex foster care adoptions. Most same-sex couples, like most heterosexual couples, want children biologically connected to at least one parent. Fertility clinics eagerly supply sperm donation, egg donation, surrogacy, and embryo creation to make that possible.<\/p>\n<p>The adults obtained the biological connection they desired. The child lost the biological parent he or she needed. Biology suddenly mattered very much \u2014 until it belonged to the child.<\/p>\n<p>Taken together, these developments reveal a coordinated cultural transformation. Law redefined parenthood. Schools normalized it. Entertainment celebrated it. Reproductive technology monetized it. Our billboard merely interrupted the narrative.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What The Children Say<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For years, \u201cThem Before Us\u201d has collected stories from children of same-sex couples. They often <a href=\"https:\/\/thembeforeus.substack.com\/p\/75-to-1-how-we-exposed-the-rigged\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testify<\/a> to confusion, pain and longing.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thembeforeus.com\/millie-fontana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Millie<\/a>, conceived through sperm donation and raised by two women, recalls watching classmates celebrate Mother\u2019s Day and Father\u2019s Day while wondering why she lacked a father. More painful than his absence, she says, was being repeatedly told she shouldn\u2019t miss him\u2014that wanting a father somehow betrayed the women who raised her.<\/p>\n<p>Heather Barwick, who grew up with two mothers and later joined me in filing an <a href=\"https:\/\/sblog.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/14-556_Heather_Barwick_and_Katy_Faust.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">amicus brief<\/a> in <em>Obergefell<\/em>, describes a similar experience. She was surrounded by adults who insisted fathers were unnecessary, yet she remembers an overwhelming and persistent longing for the dad she never had. That longing, she writes, left her not only grieving but guilty for grieving.<\/p>\n<p>Their experiences are hardly unique. Again and again, donor-conceived adults and children raised apart from one of their biological parents describe the same confusion, the same unanswered questions about identity, and the same quiet guilt for wanting what they were told they did not need. That is the pain our culture has spent a decade trying to hide.<\/p>\n<p>No Supreme Court opinion can erase a child\u2019s longing for the parent he or she has lost. No revised birth certificate can eliminate the desire to know where one comes from. No television show can convince every child that mothers and fathers are interchangeable.<\/p>\n<p>The billboard did not create children\u2019s natural longings. It simply acknowledged them.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Telling Children The Truth<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It isn\u2019t cruel to tell children the truth. Cruelty is teaching children that longing for the mother or father they lost is evidence of prejudice or ingratitude. Cruelty is rewriting birth certificates to erase the biological relationships that gave them life. Cruelty is celebrating the intentional creation of motherless and fatherless children while insisting nothing has been taken from them.<\/p>\n<p>For more than a decade, Americans have been told that redefining marriage would not redefine family. The last 11 years have demonstrated otherwise. The question has never been whether adults can love children. The question is whether children have a right to the mother and father from whom they came.<\/p>\n<p>Our billboard answered that question with two simple sentences: No child has two dads. No child has two moms. Every child has one mother.
