Johnson also faces two other charges: assault inflicting serious bodily injury on an unborn child and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case highlights the critical issue of loose or nonexistent enforcement of laws governing the disbursement and use of abortion pills. The woman allegedly took mifepristone and misoprostol, drugs used to induce abortion. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/21899-medical-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approved<\/a> the use of these drugs for up to 10 weeks of gestation. In the state of North Carolina, the abortion pill is legal up to 12 weeks gestation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1896800085\" class=\"d-flex justify-content-center fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 fdrlst__b89e9-entity-placement\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Johnson and her boyfriend found out about the pregnancy when she was 20 weeks pregnant, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/news\/local\/abortion-charges-mifespristone-durham-august-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to a search warrant obtained by WRAL. The warrant states that she ordered the pills from Virginia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arrest and search warrants indicate that Durham, North Carolina, police and firefighters responded to a call to Johnson\u2019s home on July 29, though it is not clear from reports who made the call. When they arrived at the home, they found that Johnson had given birth to a baby, who was found in the toilet. Firefighters performed CPR on the baby and took the child to a hospital for treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are currently several pro-abortion organizations that advertise their illegal shipment of abortion drugs to states with restrictions. Plan C, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/joe-biden-signs-memorandum-backpedaling-on-president-trumps-abortion-policies\/\" title=\"Joe Biden signs memorandum backpedaling on President Trump\u2019s ... policies\">pro-abortion group<\/a>, gives women resources about how to access these drugs, while downplaying the legal troubles they could encounter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cResearch shows that hundreds of thousands of people have received and used pills by mail over the past few years with no legal problems,\u201d the Plan C website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plancpills.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">states<\/a>. \u201cBut, in rare cases (less than 1%), people have gotten in legal trouble, even though most states don\u2019t have laws against doing your own abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/07\/21\/dark-money-abortion-drug-dealer-hub-referred-to-trump-doj-for-criminal-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">referred<\/a> the organization to the Department of Justice this July for criminal investigation. In his letter to then-Attorney General nominee Todd Blanche, Hawley called Plan C \u201cthe referral and logistics hub for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/abortion-pill-study-shows-theyre-more-dangerous-than-we-knew\/\" title=\"... Study Shows They&#039;re More Dangerous Than We Knew\">shipping abortion drugs<\/a> into states whose laws prohibit it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abortion drug manufacturers also profit from illegal abortions, Hawley said in the letter. Danco Laboratories and GenBioPro, both manufacturers of mifepristone, refer women to Plan C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the illegality of Johnson\u2019s alleged actions under North Carolina law, Durham County District Attorney Satana Deberry has made her pro-abortion stances clear. Deberry <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/durhamncda\/status\/1521562994903339011?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promised<\/a> in 2022 that she would not prosecute  \u201cwomen who obtain abortions or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/celebrate-the-truth-politifact-announces-festival-of-fact-checking-with-special-guests-anthony-fauci-and-cnns-brian-stelter\/\" title=\"\u2018Celebrate The Truth!\u2019 PolitiFact Announces \u2018Festival Of Fact-Checking,\u2019 With Special Guests Anthony Fauci and CNN\u2019s Brian Stelter\">health care professionals<\/a> who assist them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI believe a woman has the right to choose and has the right to make decisions about her own body, and we will review the evidence in this case in that light,\u201d Deberry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/news\/local\/crime\/article316775854.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> regarding the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But because the baby survived, the parents face steeper charges than they may have otherwise.
