In many of America\u2019s major cities, walking to the grocery store or local fast food joint often means encountering homelessness, drug addiction, and threats of violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA burrito only costs $20 when you buy it on Door Dash because you\u2019re too lazy to walk over to Chipotle or Taco Bell,\u201d Marc Thiessen <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/marcthiessen\/status\/2085031462521192887?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posted<\/a> to X. But with criminals on the streets, it may be self-preservation \u2014 not laziness \u2014 that\u2019s causing people to use delivery services.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a college student living in Washington, D.C. for the summer, and I have never used food delivery services more than I have in the past 3 months. I knew the costs of delivery were high, but the costs of walking alone to Target were much higher.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the local Target near me in D.C. is a large group of homeless people, who often shout at customers as they walk by. Other times they\u2019re slouched over, clearly overdosing and in need of help. But as far as anyone can tell, no help ever comes, even when police officers are present.<\/p>\n<p>Perceived <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27775464\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">neighborhood safety<\/a> affects whether people are willing to walk, which is often necessary to go to a restaurant, fast food place, or grocery store in major cities.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d much rather pay a $10 premium to stay in my own home than walk the city at night to try to get Taco Bell,\u201d a 23-year-old<strong> <\/strong>living in Alexandria, Virginia, told The Federalist. \u201cIt would be a different story if I had a car, but so many women are reliant on walking and public transport in cities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A 21-year-old interning in D.C. this summer told The Federalist that he also orders from DoorDash to avoid unsafe situations. \u201cI know it\u2019s more expensive, but I\u2019d rather pay a little extra for peace of mind. Getting on the Metro at night just for food is costly in its own right.\u201d He added that he doesn\u2019t order food delivery at all when he\u2019s home in Missouri: \u201cI\u2019m happy to make the trip to the store because I know I\u2019ll be safe in my town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In many major cities, violent criminals often get let off the hook for their behavior, making the streets even more unsafe. Police in Charlotte, N.C. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/news\/local\/crime\/article316801207.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arrested<\/a> 32-year-old Di-Quan Schafar Hunt Thursday for assaulting a woman walking down the sidewalk. Hunt had an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/n-m-widower-sues-alburquerque-over-sanctuary-city-policy\/\" title=\"N.M. widower sues Alburquerque over sanctuary city policy\">extensive criminal record<\/a> of more than 20 prior charges, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/07\/us-news\/north-carolina-career-criminal-di-quan-hunt-arrested-after-attacking-chasing-women-in-terrifying-social-media-videos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including<\/a> assault on a female and assault with a deadly weapon. Yet, due to the failures of the judicial system, this man was on the street and able to carry out his violent attack.<\/p>\n<p>Decarlos Brown, Jr., who <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/06\/17\/a-legal-system-that-doesnt-execute-decarlos-brown-doesnt-care-about-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">murdered<\/a> 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarustka last August, was a \u201chomeless felon with at least 14 prior arrests,\u201d including <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/news\/nation-world\/who-is-decarlos-brown-jr-the-man-accused-of-murdering-ukrainian-refugee-lightrail-charlotte-north-carolina-career-criminal-arrested-first-degree-murder-armed-robbery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">assault<\/a>. After he committed the murder, U.S. District Judge Kenneth Bell deemed him \u201cincompetent to stand trial,\u201d which delays the trial for months while he\u2019s in a mental facility.<\/p>\n<p>When people like Hunt and Brown are on the streets, and when law enforcement refuses to enforce the laws on the books, having food delivered seems like a comparatively better option.<\/p>\n<p>Every time a woman spends extra money to have food delivered to her door, she is paying to avoid the consequences of harmful government policies. By keeping the streets unsafe and riddled with crime, governments have imposed a \u201csafety tax\u201d on residents. Rather than blame young people for paying that tax, fix the problems that made it necessary.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Skye Graham is an intern at The Federalist.
