Blanche&#8217;s confirmation persisted despite initial doubts, which were resolved after he assured senators that the Justice Department\u2019s \u201canti-weaponization\u201d fund would be eliminated. Support from Senator Bill Cassidy,who made the deciding vote,was based on assurances and discussions with former Attorney General Bill barr. This confirmation marks the first Senate-confirmed Attorney General since April, following Pam Bondi&#8217;s departure. The vote took place during a rare overnight session, also resulting in the passage of a bipartisan government funding bill until December 11 and a bill imposing sanctions on Russia. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Susan Collins (R-ME), joining Democrats in opposing Blanche\u2019s nomination. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), a long-time skeptic of Trump, then <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/4679054\/bill-cassidy-todd-blanche-nomination-attorney-general\/\">announced he\u2019d cast the deciding vote<\/a> in favor of Blanche\u2019s nomination on Friday, attributing his support to the assurances he received in meetings with Blanche, as well as his conversations with former Attorney General Bill Barr.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cassidy announced his support in a floor speech that ended weeks of suspense surrounding Blanche\u2019s nomination and cleared the way for his confirmation. On any party-line vote, Republicans could only afford to lose two GOP members due to the absence of Sen. Blanche, formerly the deputy attorney general, had been serving in her place on an acting basis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vote was one of several senators took before leaving Washington until September in a rare overnight session. Republicans scrapped a vote on a party-line blueprint for Pentagon funding that was <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/4680005\/senate-gop-punts-party-line-budget-fight-august-recess\/\">set to fail without further negotiations<\/a>. But they managed to pass a bipartisan bill funding the government until Dec. 11 by an overwhelming 90-6 margin.
