Take a look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/historicsites.heritage.org\/\">Heritage Guide to Histori<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/historicsites.heritage.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">c<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/historicsites.heritage.org\/\">  Sites<\/a> for guidance and view the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/education\/report\/the-heritage-guide-historic-sites-rediscovering-americas-heritage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">special report<\/a> that summarizes its findings. <\/p>\n<p>The guide pinpoints and evaluates places that form the American character. These include battlefields like Gettysburg and Antietam, Independence Hall and the National Constitution Center, and the homes of authors, architects, and poets like Mark Twain, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Edgar Allan Poe. <\/p>\n<p>Each of these places has a unique tale to tell \u2014 tales many of us don\u2019t remember or have never heard, that comprise chapters in the American story.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, not all sites offer informative and even-toned experiences. They <a href=\"https:\/\/historicsites.heritage.org\/site\/john-dickinson-plantation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exclude pertinent information<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/historicsites.heritage.org\/site\/national-world-war-ii-museum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">include irrelevant material<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/historicsites.heritage.org\/site\/nebraska-history-museum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">are inconsistent in their tone<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/historicsites.heritage.org\/site\/montpelier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">focus almost exclusively on only one aspect of history<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/historicsites.heritage.org\/site\/harriet-beecher-stowe-center-for-literary-activism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">engage in political activism<\/a>. Accordingly, each site receives an A (good), B (mixed), or C (poor) grade.<\/p>\n<p>The guide has two main objectives: to encourage Americans to remember our history as we continue to mark the 250th anniversaries of revolutionary events, and to bring third-party accountability to the historic site space. <\/p>\n<p>The evaluations by historians, architects, poets, former military members, and others are informative, charming, and inspiring. <\/p>\n<p>If military history is your interest, consider Antietam or Gettysburg. <\/p>\n<p>The former was written by political scientist Charles Murray, who lives in the area and delights in giving tours to friends. He treats readers to the same, taking them through the offerings and <a href=\"https:\/\/historicsites.heritage.org\/site\/antietam-national-battlefield\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noting that the<\/a> \u201cfascination of any battlefield lies in one\u2019s imagination \u2014 recreating in the mind\u2019s eye what happened at different points.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Former Speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich <a href=\"https:\/\/historicsites.heritage.org\/site\/gettysburg-national-military-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writes<\/a>, \u201cThe words of the Gettysburg Address set the tone of the experience\u201d at the Civil War battlefield. Tour guides often study for years to qualify, so are particularly knowledgeable. <\/p>\n<p>Those looking to celebrate America 250 this summer can easily map out their own revolutionary trail. Think about visiting Minute Men and Adams National Historical Parks in Massachusetts, Independence Hall and the National Constitution Center in Pennsylvania, and Jamestown and Mount Vernon in Virginia. All deservedly earn an \u201cA,\u201d as do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/education\/report\/the-heritage-guide-historic-sites-rediscovering-americas-heritage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many more<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>If you value the written word, <a href=\"https:\/\/historicsites.heritage.org\/site\/noah-webster-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Noah Webster\u2019s house<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/historicsites.heritage.org\/site\/mark-twain-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mark Twain House and Museum<\/a> are lovely choices. In addition to his famous dictionary, Webster published the first modern American version of the King James Bible. Just as Tom Sawyer captures the imagination of America\u2019s children, Mark Twain\u2019s house is \u201cso colorful and interesting that children will be drawn in by the sheer fantastical qualities of it, its profusion of rooms and nooks and crannies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With these high points of the guide also come lows. <\/p>\n<p>Sites have shifted away from focusing on their inherent value. James Madison\u2019s home, Montpelier, offers no exhibits on James Madison, while <a href=\"https:\/\/historicsites.heritage.org\/site\/john-dickinson-plantation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Dickinson\u2019s home<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/historicsites.heritage.org\/site\/monticello\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Monticello<\/a> neglect key Founding Fathers. <\/p>\n<p>Such places often engage in activism. Montpelier\u2019s children\u2019s exhibit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imls.gov\/grants\/awarded\/ma-10-19-0576-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services<\/a> (IMLS), includes books recommended by the Southern Poverty Law Center. <em>From Slave Ship to Freedom Road <\/em>asks children to \u201c[i]magine not the victim, but the aggressor. We may think that we would never whip someone until their flesh cried blood.\u201d But \u201c[e]vil is as mesmerizing as a snake\u2019s eyes\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Site <a href=\"https:\/\/historicsites.heritage.org\/site\/brown-v-board-of-education-national-historic-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asks kids<\/a>: \u201cHow can YOU respectfully challenge injustice found in school systems around the country?\u201d and \u201cWhat can you do to\u2026PROVOKE\u2026your government to change?\u201d Harriet Beecher Stowe\u2019s home is known as a <a href=\"https:\/\/historicsites.heritage.org\/site\/harriet-beecher-stowe-center-for-literary-activism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cCenter for Literary Activism.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/education\/report\/the-heritage-guide-historic-sites-rediscovering-americas-heritage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Multiple places<\/a>, including the National Portrait Gallery, the Emily Dickinson Museum, the Museum of the American Revolution, Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Site, and the Women\u2019s Rights National Historical Park promote the sexual revolution and assume LGBTQ+ history is part of the \u201cmodern Civil Rights Movement.\u201d Championing gender ideology at Revolutionary War sites is particularly curious.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/historicsites.heritage.org\/site\/national-portrait-gallery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Portrait Gallery<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0\u201cThe Struggle for Justice\u201d exhibit \u201celevates LGBTQ+ rights to the same plane as civil rights for black Americans, a premise with which many Americans would disagree.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The Smithsonian museums, which receive most of their funding from the government, are among the worst on the guide.<\/p>\n<p>The vast majority of sites receive money from the government, though it\u2019s not clear that\u2019s the problem. The IIMLS and National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) have funded some questionable endeavors and donated more to \u201cB\u201d and \u201cC\u201d sites than \u201cA\u201d sites.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the IMLS gave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imls.gov\/grants\/awarded\/mh-252015-oms-22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">almost $100,000<\/a> to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute to apply an \u201cintersectional\u201d lens to its programming. Montpelier has received nearly $1 million from the IMLS over the years and <a href=\"https:\/\/awardsearch.neh.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">12 grants from the NEH since 2004<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The larger culprit seems to be the private sector, with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation being the major and worst offender. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/education\/report\/the-heritage-guide-historic-sites-rediscovering-americas-heritage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Ford Foundation<\/a> is another bad actor.<\/p>\n<p>Mellon is the largest donor to arts and humanities in the country. In 2020, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mellon.org\/news\/mellon-foundation-announces-transformation-its-strategic-direction-and-new-focus-social-justice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">put social justice at the center of their grantmaking<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/education\/report\/the-heritage-guide-historic-sites-rediscovering-americas-heritage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">They have donated<\/a> $14 million to the African American History Museum, over $13 million to Colonial Williamsburg, $5 million to Monticello, and $5 million to Montpelier. All are prominent and significant sites that earn a \u201cB\u201d or a \u201cC.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Mellon also exerts its influence through more indirect routes. They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalparks.org\/news-and-updates\/press-releases\/mellon-foundation-grants-over-13m-to-the-national-park-foundation-to-support-thirty-postdoctoral-fellowships-in-the-humanities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sponsor postdoctoral fellows at National Parks to research<\/a> \u201chow the parks are impacted and\/or informed by issues related to gender and sexuality equality, the legacy of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-snaps-at-civil-rights-leaders-in-leaked-call\/\" title=\"Biden Snaps at ... Leaders in Leaked Call\">civil rights movement<\/a>, and the history of labor and productivity.\u201d As noted, the \u201clegacy of the civil rights movement\u201d often means LGBTQ+ material.<\/p>\n<p>The American heritage, and what it means to be an American, is multi-faceted and rich. It includes the principles of the Declaration and the Constitution, the enterprising and adventurous spirit of the frontier, and tales that invoke the better angels of our nature. Historic sites convey that reality, which is what makes them valuable.<\/p>\n<p>Most people go to historic sites to learn: about a person they\u2019ve never encountered, or a topic they haven\u2019t studied since high school. By visiting, parents introduce their children to the national narrative and rediscover it themselves. <\/p>\n<p>Sites welcome multiple generations from various parts of the country, offering them a common experience that lives on in their memories. Such opportunities are increasingly precious with the decline of civic literacy, as families look at screens around the dinner table, and neighbors retreat into the customizable online world. <\/p>\n<p>Historic sites are centers of civic education: places parents renew their commitment to the cause of self-government and form the moral imagination of their children. They are invaluable, worth going to and worth defending. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >current landscape presents competing visions<\/a> to America\u2019s citizens. Historic sites can forget the past, and America will be forgotten. They can denigrate our heritage, and America will be denigrated. Or they can preserve the American story, and America will be preserved. The choice is ours.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Brenda M.
