It highlights recent primary defeats of some of these obstructive senators and calls for continued efforts to reshape the GOP&#8217;s leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Despite some progress, concerns remain about possible continued obstruction, as other GOP senators like Susan Collins may oppose Blanche\u2019s confirmation. The overall message urges GOP voters and reformers to prioritize ideological loyalty over the establishment\u2019s resistance, ensuring the success of Trump\u2019s reforms and the protection of American interests.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The tension between President Trump\u2019s MAGA administration and the obstructionist elements within the Senate GOP ranks continues, with the nomination of Todd Blanche as attorney general serving as the newest flashpoint of conflict. President Donald Trump directly <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RapidResponse47\/status\/2083521022658060530\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blasted<\/a> Sens. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., and John Cornyn, R-Texas, last week after it became clear that they remained intransigent in their opposition to confirming Blanche. <\/p>\n<p>Tillis and Cornyn ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenThomTillis\/status\/2084291734884770240\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced their support<\/a> for Blanche\u2019s confirmation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/blanche-nomination-clears-senate-judiciary-panel-advances-to-floor-vote-6070820\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advanced him out of the committee hearing<\/a>, but not without doing their best to obstruct Trump and Blanche.\u00a0And by obstructing the MAGA agenda, Tillis and Cornyn are simultaneously doing their best to hurt Trump\u2019s party in the upcoming midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p>To get the necessary support from Tillis and Cornyn, Blanche was forced to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DAGToddBlanche\/status\/2084114427813437897\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announce<\/a> that he had instructed the Department of Justice to terminate the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-announces-anti-weaponization-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cAnti-Weaponization Fund<\/a>.\u201d This fund of $1.776 billion dollars was announced in May as part of the settlement of the civil lawsuit filed by Trump against the IRS over the 2020 leak of his tax returns.<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrating his shrewd political maneuvering and an honorable, magnanimous desire to vindicate his supporters, President Trump had opted for the anti-weaponization fund to provide relief to his many ordinary American supporters instead of receiving any personal compensation for damages.\u00a0The fund was intended to provide financial relief to those who could demonstrate they had been unfairly and unlawfully targeted by the Biden administration\u2019s weaponization of the government against conservatives and especially the former president and his supporters.<\/p>\n<p>The Anti-Weaponization Fund quickly faced obstacles, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/federal-judge-temporarily-blocks-dojs-anti-weaponization-fund-6040326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leftist judges moved to enjoin the creation of the government fund<\/a> and creative Democrat plaintiffs <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5885232-comey-doj-settlement-compensation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">like James Comey suggested<\/a> they would sue based on claims of being victims of \u201cweaponized\u201d government under Trump.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Tillis Opposes Trump<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Tillis also signaled his displeasure with the anti-weaponization fund, and it appears his support for Blanche\u2019s confirmation as AG (if Tillis will indeed ultimately support Blanche) became contingent upon the scrapping of the anti-weaponization fund. Tillis has become one of the most vociferous anti-Trump Republicans in the Senate, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/samuelmkimzey\/status\/2029211321342841172\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notably attacking the administration\u2019s key policy of <\/a>enforcing immigration law.\u00a0Specifically, Tillis has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wunc.org\/politics\/2025-05-07\/tillis-trump-dc-prosecutor-jan-6-ties-ed-martin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shown nothing but vitriol<\/a> for the Trump supporters prosecuted by the Biden administration in the wake of Jan. 6, 2021, and he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/samuelmkimzey\/status\/2029219368647725427\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deliberately blocked the confirmation of Ed Martin<\/a> as U.S. district attorney for Washington, D.C., because of the legal support Martin provided for J6ers.\u00a0Tillis also <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/07\/16\/tillis-doesnt-understand-difference-between-bidens-weaponized-doj-and-trumps-pursuit-of-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criticized<\/a> the anti-weaponization fund and argued that the actions taken by the Trump administration were of the same kind as those from Biden\u2019s weaponized government. <\/p>\n<p>Similarly, John Cornyn is clearly a pro-immigration Republican, <a href=\"https:\/\/texasstandard.org\/stories\/does-john-cornyn-strongly-support-a-path-to-citizenship-for-dreamers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">having run campaign ads in Spanish and expressed support for legal status for \u201cdreamers<\/a>\u201d (illegal alien children brought to the U.S. by their parents).\u00a0Cornyn has also <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AF_Insight\/status\/2066261291560243281\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expressed his support<\/a> for Muslim and Indian immigration into Texas, something MAGA voters have resisted and want to reverse. Cornyn had also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/07\/22\/texas-john-cornyn-president-trump-ambassador-nominees-vote-hiv-aids-initiative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AF_Insight\/status\/2079684717348065427\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> he would block Trump nominees until Trump restored a program to fund AIDS relief in Africa.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Repeated Obstruction<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Tillis and Cornyn are simply the clearest examples of a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SamuelMKimzey\/status\/2028656711435735440\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">repeated pattern of obstruction<\/a> of President Trump\u2019s agenda by establishment Republican senators who dislike Trump and the way he is remaking the Republican Party.\u00a0These senators manifest their obstruction by refusing to eliminate the filibuster or utilize the talking filibuster, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SamuelMKimzey\/status\/2055852065612505200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pass the SAVE America Act<\/a> and other urgently needed legislative reforms, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/realJeremyCarl\/status\/2031465471393018271\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confirm some of Trump\u2019s best nominees<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/theblaze\/status\/1999133302888841275\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eliminate the outdated \u201cblue slips\u201d process<\/a> for judicial confirmations, which only helps the left.<\/p>\n<p>Reforming the makeup of the Senate GOP cannot come quickly enough.\u00a0Thankfully, some of the worst anti-Trump senators have been successfully primaried. Cornyn suffered a resounding defeat in May to Ken Paxton, the pro-Trump attorney general of Texas.\u00a0Paxton will likely carry the general election in November to replace Cornyn in the Senate.\u00a0Bill Cassidy, a longtime anti-Trump Republican senator from Louisiana, also suffered a primary defeat to Julia Letlow, the Trump-endorsed candidate.\u00a0And Tillis is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tillis.senate.gov\/2025\/6\/statement-from-senator-thom-tillis\">retiring at t<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tillis.senate.gov\/2025\/6\/statement-from-senator-thom-tillis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">h<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tillis.senate.gov\/2025\/6\/statement-from-senator-thom-tillis\">e end of this term<\/a>, rather than risk being primaried himself. <\/p>\n<p>It is long past time for the Republican Party to field and elect candidates for Congress who will protect the rights and defend the interests of ordinary American citizens: restricting immigration, restoring law and order, and limiting foreign entanglements.\u00a0For far too long, the Republican establishment \u2014 particularly the Republican senators \u2014 have been eager to sell out their voters in preference for cheap foreign labor, arming supposed \u201callies\u201d in overseas conflicts, and making performative political displays in Washington while refusing to play hardball against the Democrats. <\/p>\n<p>Trump has called their bluff because his 2024 victory, carrying congressional majorities along with his presidential win, has provided the Republicans with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make critical reforms, break the institutional power of the left, and ensure right-wing political power for the future.\u00a0Instead, Republican senators like Tillis and Cornyn show that they would rather be part of the resistance to Trump. <\/p>\n<p>Republican voters deserve better.\u00a0We must keep reforming the Republican Party so that corrupt establishment candidates like Tillis and Cornyn are either forced to change their behavior or can just be forced out of office and the party.\u00a0President Trump has led the way on this, and we need to complete what he has begun.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>More Troubles Ahead?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Even though Tillis and Cornyn have decided to advance Blanche\u2019s nomination to a full Senate floor vote, we are not in the clear yet. Given that Tillis and Cornyn are on their way out, have nothing further to lose, and have already made clear their hatred for Trump \u2014 what would stop them from continuing to obstruct if they really want to?\u00a0Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, has also just <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/i\/status\/2084760020730708415\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced her opposition<\/a> to Blanche\u2019s confirmation, and there <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/08\/03\/todd-blanche-senate-nomination-grappling-01023443\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">may be more trouble from other anti-Trump holdouts<\/a> like Cassidy and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, this obstruction from anti-Trump GOP senators is severely threatening the Republicans for the upcoming midterms.\u00a0By stalling the MAGA agenda, they are helping to impede Trump and make it harder for the administration to accumulate wins they can advertise to the public. And passing the SAVE America Act \u2014 which, after all, ought to be the Republican senators\u2019 top priority \u2014 could easily help secure the midterm elections and all future elections against the ubiquitous threat of election fraud that so frequently favors the left. <\/p>\n<p>However, if Blanche can get confirmed as attorney general, why not repay the faithless obstructionists by restoring the anti-weaponization fund (or something equivalent to it) once Blanche is confirmed, or even after the midterms or after Cornyn and Tillis leave office?\u00a0The urgency of our situation and the accumulated sabotage from our Republican \u201crepresentatives\u201d would more than justify such a shrewd counterattack.\u00a0The faithless Republicans don\u2019t deserve to be rewarded with honor or respect when their repeated actions are harming the American people and functionally helping the left. <\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Samuel Kimzey is a doctoral student at Hillsdale College and a 2025 Publius Fellow at the Claremont Institute.
