El Sayed ran a campaign highly critical of the establishment-backed Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI), who was boosted by over $60 million. They traded barbs over who really represented Democratic voters, and el Sayed refused to commit to supporting Schumer\u2019s position as party leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you\u2019re <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/chuck-schumer\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"384\">Chuck Schumer<\/a>,\u201d el Sayed said in July, \u201d I\u2019m pretty damn dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, however, supporters of Stevens and el Sayed alike are insisting that the party is a \u201cbig tent,\u201d and hoping the vicious attacks throughout the primary can be left in the past.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a message they\u2019ve been using throughout the election cycle, as the socialist insurgency has derailed establishment plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After New York\u2019s Democratic primary saw a slew of socialists succeed over establishment-backed candidates, including some incumbents, Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/chris-van-hollen\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"1944\">Chris Van Hollen <\/a>(D-MD) said, \u201cWe have a big tent party. This is a democracy. You\u2019re going to have lots of perspectives. It\u2019s up to the voters to decide, and they did.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/chris-murphy\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"2927\">Chris Murphy<\/a> (D-CT) has argued the \u201cbig tent\u201d should extend beyond ideological labels and include disaffected people who voted for President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe argument that I make is that there are a lot of Trump voters who believe that the economy is rigged,\u201d Murphy <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.murphy.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/murphy-on-meet-the-press-the-democratic-party-should-be-a-big-tent-party-focused-on-common-good-capitalism\">said<\/a>. \u201cThey mistakenly thought Donald Trump was going to unrig it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that the Democratic Party should be more open to \u201cbigger ideas,\u201d referring to candidates running on a \u201cdemocratic socialist\u201d platform.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do think that there is somewhat of a trend that candidates who are confronting concentrated corporate power in a meaningful way are winning. And I think that that is something that the Democratic Party should pay attention to,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe should give them a place in our party,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The approach suggests a strategy among Democratic leaders: compete fiercely in primaries, then unify behind whichever candidate emerges. The challenge for Democratic leaders is that mending the party\u2019s internal battles is easier said than done.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anti-<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/aipac\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"2620\">American Israel Public Affairs Committee<\/a> sentiment, which el Sayed espoused during his campaign, is motivating for the progressive wing of the party, but alienating for others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know if the Democratic Party is \u2018big tent\u2019 enough for proud, pro-Israel supporters,\u201d Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/4670591\/john-fetterman-democratic-party-doubts-chuck-schumer-courting\/\">said last week<\/a>, arguing that the party has increasingly embraced what he called a \u201cwarped mutation\u201d of socialism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While campaigning, el Sayed said he would have no problem primarying senators such as John Fetterman. \u201cIdeally, you put one ogre on a pike, and then everyone else gets the message,\u201d he said during a private donor call.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fetterman has also criticized his party for backing progressive candidates, arguing they risked costing Democrats winnable <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/section\/senate\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/section\/senate\/\">Senate<\/a> races.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah, no, I mean, these \u2014\u00a0the kind of people they are trying to run out of office, they are just good, traditional kinds of Democrats you would expect in New York City now,\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/video\/6399220644112\">Fetterman told<\/a> Fox News\u2019s Sean Hannity, adding that \u201cit\u2019s just been the dancing days of the dirtbag Left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fetterman isn\u2019t the only Democrat wary of the \u201cbig tent.\u201d Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) said the socialist candidates running \u2014 and winning \u2014 in Democratic primaries shouldn\u2019t be in the party at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cObviously, I\u2019m a very proud, common-sense Democrat, and I don\u2019t think DSA members are Democrats,\u201d Gottheimer <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/03\/us-news\/dem-rep-josh-gottheimer-rips-anti-american-socialists-trying-to-hijack-party\/\">said<\/a> on Fox News. \u201cThey\u2019re socialists, right? And I\u2019m all for them having their own party if they want one, but if they\u2019re trying to take over our party, that\u2019s unacceptable to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTheir values, their ideas are certainly not in line with ours, and they don\u2019t support our leadership,\u201d Gottheimer continued. \u201cThey\u2019re trying to use the Democratic Party as a vessel for their ideas. And as you heard in some of these conventions, literally, they\u2019re supporting <em>The Communist Manifesto<\/em> and [Leon] Trotsky, they\u2019re anti-American, they are anti-cop, they don\u2019t believe in borders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With just months until the midterm elections, Democrats are betting that ideological diversity will prove to be a strength rather than a liability.
