Trump recently won a court victory that temporarily prevented the BBC from accessing his financial records, which could have revealed sensitive details about his business revenues and assets, and perhaps led to a damaging public disclosure. The case centers on the BBC’s editing of Trump’s speech on January 6, 2021, which Trump claims damaged his reputation and cost him billions.

Trump’s legal team successfully requested a pause on the finding process, allowing them to amend their complaint to focus solely on the reputational harm rather than financial damages. Judge Roy Altman approved this, potentially avoiding the disclosure of Trump’s financial records if the amended complaint omits claims about financial loss.

The article notes that if Trump shifts the case exclusively to reputational damage, he may pursue higher damages later. Simultaneously occurring, the BBC faces fallout over its edited coverage of the January 6 speech, prompting resignations and legal challenges from Trump’s side. The piece also touches on broader political issues, including commentary on the political stance of figures like Fauci and the changing narratives surrounding COVID-19 measures, as well as some updates on Trump-related contracts and political analysis.

Welcome to Thursday’s edition of Washington Secrets, where we go inside Donald Trump’s legal battle with the BBC. And if the new complaint doesn’t mention the business damages, then there is no need for the trust to hand over financial documents to the BBC.

The corporation is under fire for the way it edited together two different parts of Trump’s speech on Jan. 6, shortly before his supporters overran the U.S. Capitol. The end result was that it appeared as if the president had urged the crowd to attack Congress on the day it certified his election defeat.

The BBC has apologized, and two senior figures resigned amid the controversy. Details of some 400 entities would have been handed over.

While no one knows Trump’s exact net worth, recent financial disclosures have revealed that he made more than $2.2 billion during the first year of his second term.

Trump’s lawyers have not commented on their win. But Secrets suspects they will be encouraged by a judge leaning their way at a crucial moment. (Altman was appointed by Trump in April 2019, but has stuck strictly to the law in this case, which has opened Trump to setbacks.)

And by switching to a purely reputational case, several legal minds tell Secrets that Trump could even now seek greater damages when his lawyers file their amended case.

It is just the latest twist in a case where, last month, it looked as if Trump may have met his match.

Remembering when Fauci critics were his cheerleaders

Marc Short was Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff, which gave him a front-row seat at meetings of the White House Coronavirus Task Force.
