Michigan is home to large Arab American and Muslim communities that helped fuel the \u201cuncommitted\u201d movement during the 2024 Democratic presidential primary. At the same time, it houses a long-established Jewish community concentrated in suburban Detroit that has historically formed a vital pillar of the Democratic coalition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Local events have further heightened those preexisting tensions. Earlier this year, an <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/4509827\/michigan-synagogue-attack-terrorism-hezbollah\/\">attacker drove a vehicle carrying flammable materials into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield<\/a>, setting off a fire inside the synagogue and escalating fears over antisemitism.\u00a0In the aftermath of the attack, el Sayed spared controversy by releasing a four-minute video condemning the attack, but tying it to the situation in Gaza.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El Sayed stood firm on the remarks in a press conference shortly afterward alongside controversial internet personality Hasan Piker, who earlier this year was suspended from streaming on Twitch for referring to his critics and supporters of Israel as \u201cZionist pigs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNothing justifies the heinous attack that we saw on Temple Israel,\u201d el Sayed, flanked by Piker, said at the April press conference. \u201cI also think it\u2019s just critical for us to understand that hurt people do hurt people, and the circumstances happening 6,000 miles away can affect the lives that we live here, and if we stand against violence, we\u2019ve got to stand against violence, all violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking to reporters shortly after the race was called on Wednesday, el Sayed <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4675820\/abdul-el-sayed-jewish-safety-michigan-victory-speech\/\">sought to reassure Jewish voters <\/a>that combating antisemitism would remain a priority if elected.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want all of my sisters and brothers of the Jewish faith \u2026 to know that my commitment to your safety, my commitment to Jewish safety, is the same commitment that I have to the safety of my own daughters,\u201d el Sayed said. \u201cWe can condemn antisemitism, and at the same time, we can be talking about how we bring people together, and we can be talking about everybody\u2019s pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet, just earlier in the day, el Sayed went on MS Now and described Israel as an \u201cillegal apartheid regime\u201d and \u201cbloodthirsty,\u201d arguing that his concerns extend well beyond the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think we\u2019ve seen the worst of what the Israeli government has done [under Netanyahu], but don\u2019t forget that we\u2019ve been talking about an illegal apartheid regime for a very, very long time, and that supersedes Netanyahu himself,\u201d el Sayed said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"h-disillusionment-and-a-push-for-republican-gains\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Disillusionment and a push for Republican gains<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That post-primary rhetoric has intensified anxiety among established Jewish leaders. Rabbi Asher Lopatin, who supported Stevens during the primary and spoke in his personal capacity, said el Sayed\u2019s victory left him questioning both his support for the ticket and the trajectory of his party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s very troubling,\u201d Lopatin told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cI\u2019m now mostly troubled by the Democratic Party sort of rallying around Abdul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lopatin urged Democratic leaders who voiced concerns about el Sayed during the primary to maintain that stance.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m more worried about the health of the Democratic Party,\u201d Lopatin said. \u201cI think that\u2019ll be a really important test for the Democratic Party. Is there anyone that will stand up and say, \u2018I will not endorse him\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lopatin added that his immediate focus has shifted from Stevens\u2019s loss to how Jewish voters should respond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can say for sure I will not be voting for Abdul. I don\u2019t think anyone should be voting for him,\u201d Lopatin said, though he acknowledged that deciding to actively back Republican nominee Mike Rogers is a separate consideration. \u201cThere are really two things. One of them is not voting for this kind of a person. The other one is whether you want to enthusiastically embrace Mike Rogers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That outreach from the GOP is already underway. Asked whether Republicans had reached out since Tuesday\u2019s result, Lopatin said he had \u201cdefinitely gotten texts about that,\u201d adding that many Jewish Democrats are wrestling with the same dilemma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think, at a very minimum, people should really commit to say that they cannot vote for someone like him,\u201d Lopatin said, warning that the Democratic Party is losing the unapologetically pro-Israel voices that once defined its mainstream. \u201cWhere are they? They\u2019re very rare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capitalizing on that sentiment, national Republican strategists are moving quickly to expand their footprint in the state. Sam Markstein, the communications director for the Republican Jewish Coalition, said Michigan has become one of the group\u2019s top national priorities following el Sayed\u2019s nomination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMichigan is clearly the center of the political battlefield for us this year now after this primary,\u201d Markstein told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cHistorically, we have gotten very engaged when we prioritize states that are important and races that are as important as this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Markstein pointed to precinct-level results in Jewish-heavy communities such as West Bloomfield, Southfield, Oak Park, and Bloomfield Township, where Stevens significantly outperformed her statewide margins, as evidence that moderate Democrats are open to crossing party lines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think that presents a big opportunity not just for the RJC to continue to move more Jewish voters into the Republican Party, but for Mike Rogers to move more Jewish voters into his Senate campaign and for victory in November,\u201d Markstein said, calling the matchup a \u201cbinary choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of that effort, the Republican Jewish Coalition put out a statement labeling el Sayed as \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RJC\/status\/2084988786979573995?s=20\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RJC\/status\/2084988786979573995?s=20\">the most antisemitic U.S. Senate candidate in America<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Rogers campaign did not respond to a request for comment following the primary. However, campaign spokeswoman Alyssa Brouillet previously <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/jewishinsider.com\/2026\/08\/republicans-betting-jewish-voters-swing-rogers-way-if-el-sayed-wins-primary\/\">told <em>Jewish Insider<\/em><\/a>  that the campaign was seeing an influx of disillusioned Democrats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s easy to see why when you have a candidate in this race who fundraised off of Oct. 7 and sympathized with the terrorist attacker who attempted to mass murder 140 kids at Temple Israel synagogue,\u201d Brouillet said. \u201cUnlike his opponents, Mike Rogers stands with the Jewish community in Michigan and across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-national-advocacy-groups-debate-the-fallout\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">National advocacy groups debate the fallout<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond Michigan\u2019s borders, national political groups are drawing vastly different conclusions from the primary\u2019s outcome.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The race marked a defining moment for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, whose affiliated groups spent roughly $30 million backing Stevens, the largest single-race investment in the organization\u2019s history. Despite the loss, AIPAC argued the result was not a broad rejection of pro-Israel candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile disappointed that some of our AIPAC-backed candidates did not prevail, our community is proud to support pro-Israel Democrats and Republicans who stand for our values,\u201d the organization said in a statement, emphasizing that its members \u201cremain determined to make the case for a strong U.S.-Israel relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Critics across the Left, however, pointed to the outcome as proof that massive outside spending can no longer overcome shifting party grassroots. J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/jstreetdotorg.substack.com\/p\/the-beatles-message-to-aipac-money\">wrote in a post-primary essay <\/a>that AIPAC\u2019s unprecedented spending is alienating primary voters and accelerating intraparty divisions, warning that heavy outside spending cannot repair ideological fractures over Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other Democratic voices defended the involvement of pro-Israel groups. Strategist Kevin Walling noted on <em>The Morning Meeting<\/em> podcast that AIPAC functions like any other American issue advocacy organization, adding that much of the singular criticism directed at it \u201cis rooted in antisemitism because, again, there are so many other groups out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Democratic Majority for Israel emphasized that el Sayed\u2019s razor-thin win was driven by anti-establishment energy rather than a wholesale mandate against Israel. Pointing to Stevens\u2019s strong performance among black, Jewish, and moderate voters, the group noted that pro-Israel candidates continue to win primaries nationwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4673520\/michigan-senate-democratic-primary-results-2026\/\"><strong>ABDUL EL SAYED DEFEATS HALEY STEVENS IN MICHIGAN SENATE PRIMARY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite efforts by some national strategists to downplay the results, the primary outcome leaves Michigan Democrats facing a delicate balancing act heading into November. As the party attempts to unify behind el Sayed, Republicans and conservative advocacy groups are actively moving to recruit disillusioned suburban moderates and pro-Israel voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether Jewish Democrats ultimately fall in line behind el Sayed, cross over to support Rogers, or skip the Senate race altogether remains uncertain.
