Maura Healey of Massachusetts failed to answer The Federalist when asked whether she will sign<a href=\"https:\/\/malegislature.gov\/Bills\/194\/H5595\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> H.B. 5595<\/a>, a new abortion bill passed by both the state Senate and House last week. The Federalist questioned her on whether she intended to sign the bill that would make abortions legal through all nine months and received no response.<\/p>\n<p>The law would remove the state\u2019s current 24-week abortion ban and make abortion legal up to the very moment of birth. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/north-carolina-governor-says-hell-veto-pro-life-bill-prohibiting-abortion-after-first-trimester\/\" title=\"NC Governor to Veto Pro-Life ... Banning ...\">current law allowing abortion<\/a> until 24 weeks is already extreme: At 24 weeks, babies are already capable of <a href=\"https:\/\/thebabyspot.ca\/week-24-of-pregnancy-what-to-expect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hearing, tasting, and <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/biologyinsights.com\/do-babies-think-in-the-womb-the-science-of-fetal-cognition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remembering stimuli<\/a>; their facial features are almost fully formed, and they can survive outside the womb with medical help. Any woman for any reason will be able to get an abortion based on\u00a0a doctor\u2019s\u00a0\u201cprofessional judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/sbaprolife.org\/newsroom\/press-releases\/massachusetts-abortion-up-until-birth-bill-heads-to-governors-desk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America<\/a>, Massachusetts Democrats \u201cfast tracked the measure to bypass the full committee process\u201d to allow the Senate to pass the bill before the legislature adjourned.<\/p>\n<p>If Healey signs the bill, Massachusetts would be the <a href=\"https:\/\/sbaprolife.org\/lifesavinglaws#pro-abortion-laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">11th state <\/a>to allow abortion at any point in the United States, along with the District of Columbia. The U.S. is <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/gestational-limits-on-abortion-in-the-united-states-compared-to-international-norms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one of only eight countries<\/a> in the world to allow for abortion at any point as of 2024, and \u201c46 out of 50 European U.N. member countries restrict abortion on demand after 15 weeks of gestation,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/gestational-limits-on-abortion-in-the-united-states-compared-to-international-norms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Charlotte Lozier Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Healey has a vast pro-abortion track record, making it likely that she will pass H.B. 5595. Before becoming governor, Healey was elected as Massachusetts\u2019 attorney general in 2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthoodaction.org\/planned-parenthood-advocacy-fund-massachusetts-inc\/pressroom\/planned-parenthood-advocacy-fund-endorses-ag-maura-healey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with Planned Parenthood\u2019s support<\/a>. Planned Parenthood <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthoodaction.org\/planned-parenthood-advocacy-fund-massachusetts-inc\/pressroom\/planned-parenthood-advocacy-fund-of-massachusetts-endorses-healey-driscoll-campbell-and-goldberg-for-re-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">backed her again<\/a> this year in her gubernatorial reelection campaign. While attorney general in 2022, Healey infamously issued an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newbostonpost.com\/maura-healey-and-elizabeth-warren-went-after-crisis-pregnancy-centers-two-of-them-got-vandalized-shortly-thereafter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anti-crisis-pregnancy-center advisory,<\/a>\u201d and hours after its release, pro-abortion advocates vandalized two pregnancy centers in Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>As governor in 2023, Healey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masscitizensforlife.org\/statement_gov_healey_orders_abortion_pill_stockpile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stockpiled 15,000 mifepristone chemical abortion doses<\/a> to bypass the potential of court rulings restricting the drug. In 2024, she pushed for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newbostonpost.com\/maura-healeys-proposed-budget-would-give-2-million-to-private-abortion-funds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$2 million <\/a>of taxpayer dollars to private abortion funds, and in 2025, Healey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/news\/2025\/08\/07\/massachusetts-reproductive-transgender-care-protections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passed the Shield 2.0 Act<\/a> with representatives of Planned Parenthood of Massachusetts and Mass General Brigham next to her. The Shield Act 2.0 bars the pursuit of justice when <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >abortion pill providers traffic pills<\/a> to women in states where mifepristone is banned. The act also \u201cblock[ed]courts here from considering or admitting cases of abuse, neglect or maltreatment for parents who support their children in receiving transgender care,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/news\/2025\/08\/07\/massachusetts-reproductive-transgender-care-protections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to WBUR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Massachusetts representatives created the bill after hearing about women paying for post-24-week abortions out of the state, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2026\/07\/21\/metro\/late-term-abortion-access-massachusetts-24-weeks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boston Globe<\/a> reported. Creating unlimited abortion access in the state is also one way to defy the Trump administration\u2019s pro-life stance. \u201cAs the Trump Administration ramps up attacks on reproductive care and abortion access nationwide, Massachusetts must continue closing gaps in care so that women have full autonomy over the care they need, when and where they need it,\u201d Sen. Robyn Kennedy, D-Mass., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/bill-expanding-abortion-access-clears-mass-senate-advances-to-gov-healey.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many Massachusetts doctors supported the bill, and health care groups sent a letter to the House speaker to urge increasing access to death-giving abortion procedures. Mass General Brigham, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.massgeneralbrigham.org\/en\/patient-care\/services-and-specialties\/find-a-location\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which runs a plethora of Massachusetts hospitals<\/a>, Tufts Medicine, Beth Israel Lahey Health, UMass Memorial Health, and the Massachusetts Health &#038; Hospital Association all signed the letter according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/news\/2026\/07\/22\/vote-abortion-after-24-weeks-legislation-house-approval\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WBUR<\/a>, Boston\u2019s NPR news site.<\/p>\n<p>The letter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/news\/2026\/07\/22\/vote-abortion-after-24-weeks-legislation-house-approval\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stated that<\/a> the current 24-week ban is \u201carbitrary\u201d and Massachusetts needs to \u201cempower physicians to use their professional judgment and clinical expertise to make decisions in the best interest of their patients\u201d by passing the bill.
