The damages, primarily incurred during the initial 40 days of intense combat, do not account for rebuilding costs or psychological impacts. Tehran was the hardest-hit city, with around 650 strikes targeting key districts, especially District 4, which houses military and perhaps nuclear facilities, and other districts containing military bases and strategic infrastructure. Tehran&#8217;s housing sector suffered extensive destruction, with over 50,000 units damaged or destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>Western estimates of iran\u2019s war-related economic damage range from $50 billion to $300 billion, with a median estimate around $144 billion. However,assessments suggest the true cost could be much higher when factoring in human capital loss,inflation,and reconstruction expenses. District 4 contains Lavizan, a northeast neighborhood that also holds the headquarters and complex of the Aerospace Industries Organization, a central military-industrial subsidiary of Iran\u2019s Ministry of Defense, and was suspected of holding a secretive nuclear research facility. It\u2019s also home to a fortified military garrison.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lavizan also appears to be home to key Iranian command-and-control complexes. During the 2025 Twelve-Day War, former Iranian supreme leader <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ali-khamenei\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"2865\">Ali Khamenei<\/a> was <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iranintl.com\/en\/202506153110\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.iranintl.com\/en\/202506153110\">reported<\/a> to have hidden with his family in a fortified bunker in Lavizan, a location he presumably would\u2019ve fled to again had he survived the current war\u2019s opening assassination strike on Feb. 28.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next most heavily hit district, District 21 with 62 strikes, is the site of Tehransar, a military housing neighborhood centered around an airport known for its use by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another of the heaviest hit, District 22, is home to several key Guard facilities, including the Guard\u2019s Aerospace Force headquarters in Chitgar.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">District 17 got off the easiest, suffering just three reported strikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, the strikes against Tehran destroyed or damaged 50,849 housing units, according to the municipal figures. Most of these were only lightly damaged, but 2,042 were completely destroyed and 9,315 were heavily damaged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The figure of $280 billion in economic damages is significantly higher than most Western estimates. In May, the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies\u2019s Center on Economic and Financial Power released one of the first Western estimates of the economic damage suffered by Iran, giving the wide estimate of $50 billion to $300 billion, with $144 billion being the most likely middle estimate. That analysis accounted for war damage to strategic assets and economic infrastructure, as well as disruptions to the economy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the report\u2019s analysts, FDD\u2019s Center on Economic and Financial Power senior research analyst Daniel Swift, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> in May that the total cost estimate didn\u2019t take into account the cost of rebuilding its regional proxy network, human capital loss, astronomical wartime inflation, reconstruction financing, and many more factors that are likely valued in the hundreds of billions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iran was already suffering an effective economic collapse before the war, a situation that sparked the biggest protests the Islamic Republic had seen since its inception, culminating in the brutal January crackdown that killed tens of thousands and set off the chain of events leading to the war. The war has made all these problems, particularly inflation, much worse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, leading economists at a two-day conference in Tehran warned that the economic situation was growing increasingly critical. Former presidential adviser Masoud Nili <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iranintl.com\/en\/202607204988\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.iranintl.com\/en\/202607204988\">said<\/a> at the conference that Iran\u2019s economy was transitioning from a manageable malaise into an acute crisis. Inflation has been the most persistent issue, exploding during the war as the economy effectively ground to a halt while the government kept printing money to pay its Guards.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Economist Mohammad-Mehdi Behkish, speaking at the conference, said the combined total needed to rebuild war damage, restore growth, and modernize industry stood at about $500 billion in investment. He added that much of this was needed from international sources, as Iran\u2019s domestic resources had nowhere near enough to match this sum on a reasonable timeline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In remarks carried by government-linked outlets, Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati said per-capita income had fallen by 47%, reaching levels not seen since the 1990s, when Iran was still recovering from its nearly decade-long war with Iraq.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/4491652\/iran-finance-death-blow-war\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/4491652\/iran-finance-death-blow-war\/\">IRAN FACES FINANCIAL DEATH BLOW BECAUSE OF WAR<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unsurprisingly, Iran reached its <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/iranwire.com\/en\/news\/155831-iran-records-highest-ever-misery-index-at-911\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/iranwire.com\/en\/news\/155831-iran-records-highest-ever-misery-index-at-911\/\">highest-ever number<\/a> on the Misery Index, an economic indicator combining the inflation and unemployment rates, at 91.1 points, up from 74.2 points in the winter and 51.7 points in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The economic situation is now far worse than it was in December and January, conditions that triggered a national uprising.
