Outgoing senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis initially threatened to oppose the nomination but ultimately supported it following discussions and a signed statement ending the fund.<\/p>\n<p>Cornyn emphasized the need for a stable,confirmed leader at the Department of Justice,praising Blanche&#8217;s legal expertise and ability to advise the President confidentially. Tillis expressed some reservations, highlighting unfair accusations of government weaponization by both political sides and criticizing certain investigations and political attacks, including instances involving FBI officials.<\/p>\n<p>The full Senate vote remains uncertain, as some Republican senators such as Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Bill Cassidy may be unreliable votes. Murkowski viewed the dissolution of the anti-weaponization fund as positive but wanted more details. <\/p>\n<p>Chairman Chuck Grassley defended Blanche, citing improved crime statistics under his leadership and criticizing the Biden administration&#8217;s focus on political weaponization over public safety. Democrats,meanwhile,challenged Blanche&#8217;s integrity and accused him of being beholden to Trump and involved in cover-ups. Blanche&#8217;s confirmation process reflects partisan tensions over justice priorities, crime, and government accountability.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Senate Judiciary Committee voted to advance the nomination of Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche for the full post along party lines on Tuesday, setting up a floor vote of the full Senate to confirm him as as attorney general.<\/p>\n<p>Blanche was advanced 12-10 out of committee, after outgoing Sens. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Thom Tillis, R-N.C., <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/07\/30\/cornyn-and-tillis-anti-blanche-jihad-epitomizes-the-gops-hatred-for-its-voters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">threatened to tank the nomination<\/a> over the Justice Department\u2019s $1.776 billion anti-weaponization fund, meant to provide restitution to victims of government weaponization under the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>After meetings with Blanche and a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DAGToddBlanche\/status\/2084114427813437897\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signed statement<\/a> ending that fund, both Cornyn and Tillis agreed to vote in favor of him out of committee. President Donald Trump thought about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/07\/30\/texas-trump-cornyn-blanche-attorney-general-nomination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">withdrawing<\/a> Blanche\u2019s nomination until the two Republican holdouts leave office in January 2027.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[M]y vote to advance Mr. Blanche\u2019s nomination goes beyond this document. We need a stabilizing force at the Department of Justice, and Mr. Blanche deserves the opportunity to provide that, as opposed to continuing to serve in an acting capacity and as the deputy attorney general,\u201d Cornyn said. \u201cThe Department of Justice does not need a temporary, unconfirmed nominee as our nation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/garland-on-if-illegal-border-crossing-should-still-be-a-crime-if-hell-prosecute-i-dont-know\/\" title=\"Garland On If Illegal Border Crossing Should Still Be A ..., If He\u2019ll Prosecute: \u2018I Don\u2019t Know\u2019\">top law enforcement officer<\/a>. President Trump needs someone in this role, as well, with a strong legal mind, but who also is close enough to him to give him confidential legal advice to tell him hard truths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought what Mr. Blanche said during his hearing was very important. He said, \u2018I can give the president confidential legal advice, but of course, he doesn\u2019t have to follow it. He was elected President of the United States and not me,&#8217;\u201d Cornyn added.<\/p>\n<p>Tillis seemed to be less generally supportive of Blanche. He used his time ahead of the vote Tuesday to claim that government weaponization happens on \u201cboth\u201d sides. He noted Crossfire Hurricane \u2014 the Obama intelligence agencies\u2019 coordinated effort to frame the incoming President Trump as a Russian spy with falsified intelligence based on lies from Democrat operatives \u2014 and Obama IRS chief Lois Lerner\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/07\/07\/trump-admin-should-purge-irs-of-officials-who-targeted-conservatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self-admitted <\/a>practice of financially targeting conservative groups for their beliefs. Tillis also said some Biden officials \u201cshould probably be disbarred or disciplined\u201d for targeting Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>Although Tillis did not refer to James Comey by name, he also appeared to reference the former FBI director\u2019s \u201c86 47\u201d post \u2014 a post a federal<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/federal-grand-jury-indicts-former-fbi-director-james-comey-threats-harm-president-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> grand jury in North Carolina argued<\/a> was an assassination threat against President Trump. Tillis seemed to oppose the decision to bring charges against the FBI director over the post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome bonehead in North Carolina thinks that that\u2019s a crime,\u201d Tillis said. \u201cWell, they better damn sure have information to back it up because if all it is is a picture, that person should lose his job, his or her job.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Tillis did not commit to supporting his confirmation in the full Senate, specifically stating he was \u201cI am prepared to vote yes today \u2026 in moving his confirmation, or nomination, forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear if there will be a floor vote battle for his nomination, as there are other Republicans, such as Sens. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Bill Cassidy, R-La., who may be needed and who are persistently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/08\/03\/todd-blanche-senate-nomination-grappling-01023443\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unreliable<\/a>. While Cassidy is leaving office this year with Cornyn and Tillis, Collins is in a contentious reelection battle this year.<\/p>\n<p>Murkowski <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/08\/03\/todd-blanche-senate-nomination-grappling-01023443\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> that the written dissolution of the anti-weaponization fund is a \u201cpretty good step\u201d but said that she wanted to \u201cfind out a little bit more about the negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, allowed every Democrat committee member to speak who wanted to ahead of the vote on Tuesday, and most Democrats peddled the same kinds of smears against Blanche they have been throughout his confirmation hearings: That he is only beholden to Trump, not the American people; that the anti-weaponization fund is not really dissolved; that he is involved in an Epstein cover-up; and that he does not care about victims of crime.<\/p>\n<p>Grassley, on the other hand, noted the downward trend in crime since the Trump administration took office, including under Blanche\u2019s leadership in an acting capacity, and read through comparative crime statistics that he <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/07\/15\/grassley-democrats-who-weaponized-doj-hate-blanche-which-proves-hes-a-good-ag-pick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> during Blanche\u2019s confirmation hearings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTodd Blanche\u2019s Justice Department has reprioritized the safety of Americans after the Biden administration opened borders to violent criminals and then turned a blind eye to heinous crimes that were happening around the country,\u201d Grassley said. \u201cThe Biden administration was too busy weaponizing the Justice Department against political opponents to stop real crime, and so please don\u2019t forget, whistleblowers and media outlets reported that the Biden FBI even reassigned personnels from investigating child sex crimes to work on January 6 cases. So it\u2019s no surprise that when the Trump administration secured the borders and Mr. Blanche did his job prioritizing safety of Americans, crime has come down.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Breccan F.
