Sanders insists that the democratic caucus should reject any measures that would cut benefits, raise the retirement age, or privatize the program. Instead,he advocates for expanding Social Security through measures like taxing the wealthiest americans more,specifically proposing lifting the payroll tax cap so income above $250,000 is taxed similarly to lower earners. Sanders opposes a bipartisan bill known as the PROMISE Act, which aims to create a fast congressional process to address Social security\u2019s long-term solvency, criticizing it for lack of transparency and public input. In other words, Sanders is in favor of lifting the Social Security payroll tax cap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security payroll tax is $184,500. Both employees and employers pay a 6.2% rate on earnings below that income amount, totaling 12.4%. The tax doesn\u2019t apply to anyone who earns above $184,500 in the same way it applies to people who make less.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wealthy people pay the Social Security tax only on a capped portion of their earned income, whereas lower-income workers, most of whom make below the tax cap, pay on 100% of their total earnings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sanders wishes to apply the payroll tax to all income above $250,000 per year through his Social Security Expansion Act.
