The deal resolved concerns over a controversial $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund, which had raised fears about potential payouts to Jan. 6 defendants and protections beyond those specified in a previous Trump-IRS settlement. Blanche clarified that no funds had been transferred,no claims paid, and the fund’s management had not begun. The agreement also limited the scope of tax audit protections to Trump, his sons, and the Trump Organization, applying retroactively. The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote on Blanche’s confirmation, with the full Senate expected to proceed before the August recess. The deal was facilitated by assurances that the fund cannot be revived and that protections are limited, satisfying concerns from some Republicans, while Democrats remain cautious about potential future payouts. Blanche, who previously served as Trump’s criminal defense attorney and as Deputy Attorney General, is considered a qualified nominee, and his confirmation is seen as pivotal in restoring law and order.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche is poised to clear a crucial hurdle Tuesday morning after two Republican holdouts announced Monday that they would support advancing his nomination to lead the Justice Department permanently.

Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Thom Tillis (R-NC) said Monday that they would vote for Blanche during the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Tuesday meeting, resolving an impasse that forced the panel to postpone consideration of his nomination last week.
