The fires, wich covered about 12.5 square miles, are among the most destructive in the state’s history and remain uncontained, with over 1,000 firefighters engaged in battle efforts. No deaths or major injuries have been reported, though hundreds of homes, farms, and possessions have been lost.Residents like Miriam and Daniel Sim face the grim reality of rebuilding or relocating, as their homes were reduced to ruins. The fires are exacerbated by severe drought and dry conditions, and firefighting efforts are hindered by factors such as the risk of drone interference. Meanwhile, other regions including Idaho, Oregon, and Utah are experiencing additional large grassland and wildfire outbreaks, threatening hundreds of structures and livestock. Spokane has set up shelters for displaced residents, and authorities continue to work under growing stress to contain the blazes across the broader Western U.S. landscape.

SPOKANE, Washington (AP) — Some residents returned to devastated neighborhoods in eastern Washington state to find their homes leveled by wildfires that erupted across a parched landscape over the weekend, covering yards in charred debris.
