Smith has become a prominent focus for Republicans after prosecuting President Trump and requests to testify are scheduled for September 22. Grassley criticized Smith for conducting a \u201cdeeply flawed, weaponized inquiry,\u201d claiming that Smith subpoenaed phone records from multiple senators, obtained texts from over 40 members of Congress, and accessed private communications and financial data of numerous Republican entities. Grassley emphasized that Smith should be held accountable and be transparent before Congress. He expressed frustration that Smith obtained texts from him and other senators sent around the January 6 Capitol riot, including some from Democrats and Republicans. Some of the others whose texts were obtained included Sens.
