Republican Mike Rogers, backed by Trump, is expected to secure the nomination, while Democrats \u0432\u044b\u0431\u043e\u0440 between Abdul el Sayed, a socialist-backed candidate known for progressive and left-wing positions, and Rep.Haley Stevens, a centrist endorsed by prominent Democrats.Both favor ending the filibuster.<\/p>\n<p>The governor\u2019s race features Republican John James, a Trump-endorsed candidate leading in polls, against Perry Johnson, with Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson enjoying a substantial lead among Democrats over sheriff Chris Swanson. The candidates disagree on issues such as data center regulation, healthcare, housing, and education. Benson advocates for industry guardrails and expanding healthcare access, while Swanson proposes dividing the state into zones for data centers and promoting housing progress.<\/p>\n<p>In the Michigan House race for the 7th Congressional District, incumbent Republican Tom Barrett faces democratic contenders Bridget Brink, Matt Maasdam, and William Lawrence. Brink, a former ambassador to Ukraine, leads polls but faces the risk of vote splitting with Maasdam and Lawrence, the latter being a progressive and climate advocate with far-left positions. Lawrence supports a federal moratorium on data centers, ending aid to Israel, and Medicare for All, but his stance has raised concerns among centrist Democrats over his electability in November.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/michigan\/\">Michigan<\/a> voters will head to the polls to select nominees for the state\u2019s top offices, putting the spotlight on one of the most prominent battleground states in the country. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During Tuesday\u2019s primary election, residents will cast ballots in multiple races, including the governor\u2019s race, a swing U.S. Senate race, and one of the tightest House races nationwide.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-senate-race\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Senate race<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Michigan Senate primary for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) will take place on Aug. 4.\u00a0Cook Political Report rates the Senate race in the purple state as a toss-up. Though the state has a Democratic governor and two current Democratic senators, Trump won Michigan in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2016-elections\/\">2016<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\/\">2024<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), who is backed by Trump, is expected to secure the Republican nomination as he is the only GOP contender in the race. Rogers has competed to represent Michigan in the U.S. Senate before, failing in his bid against Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) in 2024 by just 19,000 votes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats on Tuesday are choosing between <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4653346\/el-sayed-stop-making-fun-haley-stevens\/\">Abdul el Sayed<\/a>, who <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/06\/dsa-progressives-wisconsin-michigan-primaries-00986944?nname=playbook&#038;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&#038;nrid=25491daf-c42b-4649-b20c-4ffd776afc37\">is backed<\/a> by socialists, and Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI), a comparatively centrist establishment-backed candidate. Stevens, a four-term congresswoman from Birmingham, has been endorsed <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4663052\/whitmer-backs-haley-stevens-michigan-senate-race\/\">by Whitmer<\/a>, Peters, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY). El Sayed,\u00a0a former Wayne County health director, has been endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), alongside Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ro Khanna (D-CA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El Sayed has been<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/polls\/michigan-us-senate-election-polls-2026.html\"> polling well<\/a> ahead of Stevens in the weeks <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4667064\/el-sayed-stays-ahead-stevens-final-week-primary-undecided-voters-outsize-lead\/\">leading up<\/a> to the election. Stevens has warned she is far more electable in November than el Sayed, arguing that her 2018 victory in a competitive state Senate district over an incumbent Republican proves her ability to win close races.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both candidates support <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/4490687\/joe-manchin-john-cornyn-deeply-disappointing-flip-senate-filibuster\/\">ending the filibuster<\/a>,\u00a0 the 60-vote supermajority required to pass most Senate legislation, which has long been hailed by centrists as essential to incentivizing bipartisanship in the upper chamber. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">U.S. Senate candidates Abdul El-Sayed, left, and U.S. Rep. (Robin Buckson\/Detroit News via AP, Pool)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El Sayed is known for holding a range of left-wing or socialist positions, including abolishing <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ice\/\">Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a>, instituting Medicare for All, and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/abdulforsenate.com\/priority\/money-in-your-pocket\/\">raising taxes<\/a> on wealthier individuals, such as raising the top marginal tax rate on earnings over $1 million, taxing capital gains and inheritances over $1 million as ordinary income, implementing a \u201cbillionaire tax\u201d on wealth over $1 billion, and putting a progressive tax on wealth held by trusts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El Sayed has supported aspects of the defund the police and prison abolitionist movements in the past, though he has walked back such positions on the campaign trail. He wants Congress to regulate AI companies like public utilities, arguing they should become public benefit corporations required to balance public interest against profit, and supports the creation of a new federal agency to hold regulatory power over AI, including evaluating frontier AI models before deployment. He is opposed to allowing Congress<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/technology\/3927009\/how-should-ai-be-regulated\/\"> to create a national standard <\/a>for AI regulation, and override various state laws on AI regulation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the foreign policy arena, el Sayed has condemned the war in Iran <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/there-are-a-lot-of-people-in-dearborn-who-are-sad-democratic-senate-hopeful-abdul-el-sayed-said-he-needed-to-stay-silent-on-khamenei-killing-because-many-of-michigans-muslim-voters\/\">and declined<\/a> to endorse the death of Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei because \u201cthere are a lot of people in Dearborn who are sad\u201d about his demise. The socialist-backed candidate believes Israel is committing genocide in Gaza in its war against Iranian-backed Hamas terrorists, and backs pulling all U.S. aid from Israel. He has attracted controversy for repeatedly campaigning with Twitch political streamer Hasan Piker, due to the streamer\u2019s antisemitic views,<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jvAN_N2OQJQ\"> including comments in April<\/a> that he \u201cwould vote for Hamas over Israel every single time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though Stevens has been repeatedly attacked by el Sayed over the Israel-Palestine issue, she has defended her support for a two-state solution, saying she believes \u201cIsrael has a right to peacefully exist alongside the people of Palestine and in Gaza.\u201d Stevens voted against the recent congressional amendment that sought to pull all U.S. aid from the Middle Eastern country. While she supports Israel\u2019s right to exist, Stevens has been critical of Israeli Prime Minister <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/benjamin-netanyahu\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"378\">Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a>, arguing during a debate this month that \u201che has not brought us closer to peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stevens supported Medicare for All when she first ran for Congress in 2018, but has since shifted to backing efforts to expand Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, supporting legislation to make tax subsidies for the ACA permanent after they expired in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stevens is also against abolishing ICE, but has supported reforming the federal agency. After controversial fatal shootings in Minnesota, she called for then-Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to be impeached. A bill she introduced titled the \u201cHold ICE Accountable Act of 2026\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-bill\/8154\/text\">would appoint<\/a> a special prosecutor to investigate actions conducted by ICE during Trump\u2019s second term. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> Stevens said she is open to Congress preempting state regulations on AI because a patchwork of state laws is \u201cnot good for the long term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe best, best way to preserve these things and to protect our national security is to have a single, federal standard,\u201d she said. \u201cI am not going to support or vote for anything that preempts state law unless it is accompanied by robust safeguards at the federal level.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-governor-s-race\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The governor\u2019s race<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2000,<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/formergovernors\/list-of-all-former-governors\"> two <\/a>of Michigan\u2019s governors have been Republican, and two have been Democratic, highlighting the state\u2019s battleground status.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the Republican side, Rep. John James (R-MI) and businessman Perry Johnson are engaged in a tense battle to secure their party\u2019s nomination to succeed outgoing Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI). James, a U.S. representative since 2023,\u00a0holds Trump\u2019s endorsement, as well as that of former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, who recently dropped out of the gubernatorial race. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polling indicates James holds a sizeable lead ahead of Tuesday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The race has been defined by bitter personal attacks, from<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/state\/4657827\/personal-attacks-infidelity-rumors-break-out-bitter-michigan-governor-race\/\"> infidelity allegations<\/a>, \u201cnepo baby\u201d claims, and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/state\/4645036\/candidate-race-comment-michigan-gubernatorial-race\/\">racially charged comments <\/a>directed against James, a black candidate, to Johnson\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/state\/4539915\/perry-johnson-john-james-campaign-logo-lawsuit\/\">lawsuit contending <\/a>James\u2019 campaign logo that read \u201cJohn James Governor\u201d was misleading to voters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Johnson has blasted James for taking campaign donations from utility companies and data center developers, and sought to frame his opponent as a liberal. Johnson has proposed totally eliminating the state income tax and backs a one-year data center moratorium. James has focused on expanding local control over data center development and has proposed a 20% to 25% income tax cut based on slashing the state budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">James has also proposed allowing parents to scrutinize classrooms by requiring all schools to post their curricula online, opening up teachers\u2019 instruction materials to Freedom of Information Act requests, and creating a \u201cparental bill of rights\u201d addressing transgender students, which would ban biological males from girls\u2019 locker rooms, bathrooms, and sports teams. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Democratic candidates running for governor are Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Benson has served as Michigan\u2019s secretary of state since 2019. She is backed by the establishment, including former Democratic governor Jim Blanchard. Swanson has been leading the sheriff\u2019s office for 34 years, and served as a faculty member for the University of Michigan Flint in public health for 28 years. He has the backing of the American Muslim Political Action Committee and powerful labor unions, including the nationwide Teamsters and statewide IBEW and Iron Workers Local 25 unions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Benson appears to hold a massive lead in the race, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/polls\/michigan-governor-election-polls-2026.html\">according to<\/a> polling. Benson raised $4.9 million and spent $2.1 million, and had over $6.4 million in cash on hand heading into the general election, during the reporting period beginning Jan. 1. Swanson raised just over $722,000 and spent around $806,000, leaving him with around $187,000 in cash on hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite his underdog status, Swanson painted himself as the candidate with the best chance of keeping the governor\u2019s seat blue in the general election and attracting needed Republican votes in November during <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/detroit\/news\/chris-swanson-discusses-2026-michigan-gubernatorial-campaign\/\">an interview<\/a> with CBS News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m predicting a six- to eight-point primary victory, and then a double-digit November win because I can pull Republicans back, I can pull people that Mike Duggan was trying to get into the independent space, as with the Democratic base,\u201d Swanson said, referring to Duggan, the Democrat turned independent who made a gubernatorial bid before dropping out of the race in May. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Benson and Swanson say they view data centers as necessary, while both back expanding guardrails on the industry. Benson has<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/jocelyn-benson-none-of-my-family-is-profiting-from-data-centers\/\"> been needled<\/a> by Swanson for holding familial ties to data center developers, but has touted herself as a champion for guardrails for their expansion on the campaign trail. She<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jocelynbenson.com\/issues\/data-centers\"> backs requiring<\/a> data center developers to hold public hearings, bear the cost of additional energy usage, prove that the projects won\u2019t harm the environment, and has threatened to support a moratorium on development should companies violate such rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swanson has proposed dividing the state up into zones signaling whether areas are open or closed for data centers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou divide the state up in three colors: yellow, red, and green,\u201d he <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.9and10news.com\/2026\/07\/21\/meet-the-democrats-running-to-be-michigans-next-governor\/\">told<\/a> 9and10 News. \u201cYellow means that there\u2019s infrastructure baseline, and there\u2019s a desire for new manufacturing, new industry. That\u2019s where investors can look and say, \u2018Okay, we can go there. There\u2019s some potential.\u2019 Red means no infrastructure, or they have no desire for any industrial manufacturing. So don\u2019t go to these cities and towns. Don\u2019t try to force it down their throat, no matter how much land is available. And third is green, meaning infrastructure, and they\u2019re open for business.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">Genessee County, Mich. Swanson says Michigan should be \u201ca state where everybody has a baseline healthcare option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On housing, Benson says she wants to streamline regulations that slow down construction, increase assistance for first-time homebuyers, \u201ccrack down on corporate investors who buy up properties,\u201d and expand the Michigan homestead property tax credit. Swanson has focused on building more housing, saying that around an additional 160,000 houses are needed to be built in order to create a competitive market. He wants to see 10,000 new housing units built in the first 24 months of being elected to office, should he win in November, and wants the state to lower interest rates to spur development.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-michigan-house-race\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Michigan House race<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The race for the 7th Congressional District seat is viewed as the most competitive House race in Michigan, and one of the tightest nationwide, with the Cook Political Report rating it a toss-up. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The seat is held by a Republican, Rep. Tom Barrett (R-MI), who is running for reelection after winning his first term and flipping the district red by under four points in 2024.\u00a0The district in the Lansing area is a battleground that Trump won by just over a single point in 2024, encompassing Clinton, Ingham, Livingston, and Shiawassee counties, in addition to most of Eaton County and parts of Genesee and Oakland counties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barrett is the lone GOP contender on the ballot. On Aug. 4, voters will pick between three Democrats vying for their party\u2019s nomination to challenge him: former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink, retired Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam, and political organizer William Lawrence.
