Some political experts are giving them hope.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-1\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-1\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-15\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<h2 id=\"h-could-benson-keep-michigan-blue\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Could Benson keep Michigan blue?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMichigan has actually not elected a Democrat to succeed another Democrat as governor since 1960\u2014a streak that would seem to caution against designating Benson as a favorite,\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/centerforpolitics.org\/crystalball\/three-gubernatorial-rating-changes-michigan-to-leans-democratic-new-mexico-to-safe-democratic-florida-to-likely-republican\/\">writes <\/a><em>Sabato\u2019s Crystal Ball<\/em>, which recently shifted the race from toss-up to leans Democratic. \u201cBut these kinds of historical patterns are not set in perpetuity\u2014Pennsylvania, for instance, had a steady eight-years-and-out rhythm for much of the postwar era, which held up until it was broken in 2014.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cConsolidation on the gubernatorial primary\u2019s Republican side, combined with a clear Democratic front-runner in Benson\u2026 has made the governor\u2019s race look more favorable for Democrats than it did in the spring,\u201d it continues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some political strategists believe voter angst about President Donald Trump\u2019s policies, particularly over surging gas prices in Michigan, sparked by the Iran war, could hurt Republican gubernatorial contenders James or Johnson in November.\u00a0No matter who the nominee is, it will be a tough cycle for the GOP, Republican strategist Dennis Lennox <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/detroit\/news\/republicans-saw-michigan-as-ripe-for-a-takeover-mood-is-shifting\/\">told <\/a>CBS News.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnyone who isn\u2019t being paid to say otherwise will concede that 2026 is going to be a very difficult year for Republicans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the Democratic side, Benson is viewed as somewhat of the natural heir to Whitmer, having served in state government during the entirety of the outgoing governor\u2019s administration. While Whitmer has pressed corporate subsidies and advocated for manufacturing advancements, Benson<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/jocelyn-benson-none-of-my-family-is-profiting-from-data-centers\/\"> has harped<\/a> on the importance of diversifying the economy to help small businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI understand the importance of bringing manufacturing into the state, respecting and growing our legacy economies, certainly, but I also want to diversify our economy,\u201d Benson said. \u201cThat\u2019s something that I want to spend more focus on as governor than I think past governors might.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Benson has also sought to differentiate herself on housing. In her final State of the State address in late February, Whitmer appeared to endorse bills that would overhaul zoning requirements statewide, and called for a \u201cstate-level affordable housing tax credit\u201d to subsidize construction \u201cfor working-class families.\u201d Benson <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/jocelyn-benson-pitches-housing-plan-with-homebuyer-tax-credits-airbnb-tax\/\">told reporters<\/a> the following month that Whitmer\u2019s proposal is \u201can important one\u201d but added \u201cwe want to build on that\u201d by \u201celiminating a lot of the long-standing certification processes\u201d in order to get housing developments breaking ground more quickly.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"h-benson-faces-primary-challenge\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benson faces primary challenge<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Benson appears to hold a massive lead in the race, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/polls\/michigan-governor-election-polls-2026.html\">according to<\/a> polling, and is largely backed by the establishment, including former Democratic governor Jim Blanchard. She will have to defeat Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson in the primary next week before advancing to the general election. Her top Democratic rival says he\u2019s been leading the sheriff\u2019s office for over 30 years and served as a faculty member for the University of Michigan Flint in public health for nearly three decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite his underdog status, Swanson painted himself as the candidate with the best chance of keeping the governor\u2019s seat blue in the general election and attracting needed Republican votes in November during <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/detroit\/news\/chris-swanson-discusses-2026-michigan-gubernatorial-campaign\/\">an interview<\/a> with CBS News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m predicting a six- to eight-point primary victory, and then a double-digit November win because I can pull Republicans back, I can pull people that Mike Duggan was trying to get into the independent space, as with the democratic base,\u201d he said, referring to Duggan, the Democrat turned independent who made a gubernatorial bid before dropping out of the race in May.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Benson and Swanson say they view data centers as necessary, while both back <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jocelynbenson.com\/issues\/data-centers\">expanding guardrails <\/a>in the industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swanson has proposed dividing the state into three zones, signaling whether areas are open or closed for data centers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou divide the state up in three colors: yellow, red, and green,\u201d he <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.9and10news.com\/2026\/07\/21\/meet-the-democrats-running-to-be-michigans-next-governor\/\">told<\/a> 9and10 News. \u201cYellow means that there\u2019s infrastructure baseline, and there\u2019s a desire for new manufacturing, new industry. That\u2019s where investors can look and say, \u2018Okay, we can go there. There\u2019s some potential.\u2019 Red means no infrastructure, or they have no desire for any industrial manufacturing. So don\u2019t go to these cities and towns. Don\u2019t try to force it down their throat, no matter how much land is available. (AP Photo\/Jose Juarez)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On healthcare, Swanson believes Michigan should be \u201ca state where everybody has a baseline healthcare option,\u201d while Benson says she backs expanding transparency in medical billing and passing a $5,000 caregiver tax credit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On housing, Benson says she wants to streamline regulations that slow down construction, increase assistance for first-time homebuyers, \u201ccrack down on corporate investors who buy up properties,\u201d and expand the Michigan homestead property tax credit. Swanson has focused on building more housing units, as at least 160,000 more houses are needed in order to create a competitive market. Swanson wants to see 10,000 new housing units built in the first 24 months of being elected to office, should he win in November.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-republicans-derail-into-messy-primary-battle\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Republicans derail into messy primary battle<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the Republican side, James has been viewed as the frontrunner leading up to the Aug. primary. He holds Trump\u2019s endorsement, as well as that of former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, who recently dropped out of the gubernatorial race. But businessman Perry Johnson has been giving him a bitter fight for the GOP\u2019s gubernatorial nomination to succeed Whitmer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polling indicates James holds a lead ahead of Tuesday. But Johnson has warned that James is set to lose to Democrats in the general election, pointing to his losses in two statewide elections before he won a House seat in 2023.\u00a0James lost U.S. Senate races in 2018 and 2020 to Democratic incumbent Sens. Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters (D-MI). James poured around $140 million into the two races yet still fell short, Johnson<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wlns.com\/skubick\/perry-johnson-says-john-james-wont-be-michigans-next-governor\/\"> warned<\/a> last month, urging voters not to give his rival a third chance for the November election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Johnson mounted his own short-lived bids for governor in 2022 and president in 2024. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">President Donald Trump and Senate candidate Mike Rogers listen as Rep.
