(AP Photo\/Carolyn Kaster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump and Fauci first met in the White House Situation Room on Jan. 29, 2020, as the administration grappled with the emerging threat of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fauci later recorded the encounter in his diary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe President came in, and the first thing he said as he looked at me was: \u2018Anthony, you are really a famous guy,\u2019\u201d Fauci wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump stayed for about 20 minutes, asking questions about the virus and its potential threat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was surprised and very pleased, and the Deputies were clearly stunned and impressed,\u201d Fauci wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A month later, Fauci recounted that Trump called him about the emerging COVID-19 crisis. Fauci said he encouraged the president not to downplay the seriousness of the situation because, if the outbreak became severe, \u201cit would look like he is covering up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought that he heard what I said, but the next day, he again underplayed it,\u201d Fauci wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By March, however, Fauci was increasingly frustrated by what he viewed as Trump\u2019s propensity to ramble and lose focus during discussions about the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPresident Trump\u2019s tendency to announce that he loved me and then scream at me on the phone \u2014 well, let\u2019s just say that I found this to be out of the ordinary,\u201d Fauci wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their interactions could shift dramatically from one encounter to the next.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a March 2020 meeting, Fauci described Trump\u2019s discussion of the pandemic as \u201ca disturbingly rambling discussion\u201d in which the president talked about television ratings, hydroxychloroquine, influenza, and other subjects while Fauci tried to keep him focused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI insisted through the rambling and lack of attention span that the POTUS explicitly say that this is NOT a quarantine,\u201d Fauci wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet even as the relationship deteriorated, flashes of closeness remained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On June 2, 2020, Fauci recorded a more positive meeting with Trump in the Oval Office focused on developing COVID-19 vaccines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs usual, POTUS was very warm and friendly with me,\u201d Fauci wrote. \u201cWhen he walked into the Oval with us waiting, I was standing next to the door, and he said, \u2018I love you, Tony. I feel like giving you a big hug.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those moments increasingly became the exception.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the course of their relationship, Fauci privately described Trump as \u201cincompetent,\u201d \u201can idiot,\u201d \u201ctotally nuts,\u201d and \u201can obnoxious adolescent.\u201d Trump, in turn, called Fauci a \u201cdisaster,\u201d dubbed him the \u201cking of flip-flops,\u201d mocked his credibility, and accused him of seeking the spotlight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the fall, the relationship had become openly antagonistic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4669493\/fauci-katie-miller-apology-trump-scream\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4669493\/fauci-katie-miller-apology-trump-scream\/\"><strong>FAUCI RECOUNTS HOW KATIE MILLER WAS DISPATCHED TO APOLOGIZE AFTER TRUMP SCREAMED AT HIM<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-final-call\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The final call<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final phone call between Trump and Fauci was a far cry from their first meeting, when Trump had lavished praise on the infectious disease expert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The call came at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 1, 2020, two days before Election Day, when voters would decide whether Trump would win a second term or Biden would become president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump was aboard Air Force One when he called Fauci following <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/fauci-covid-winter-forecast\/2020\/10\/31\/e3970eb0-1b8b-11eb-bb35-2dcfdab0a345_story.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/fauci-covid-winter-forecast\/2020\/10\/31\/e3970eb0-1b8b-11eb-bb35-2dcfdab0a345_story.html\">an interview<\/a> with the <em>Washington Post<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTony, I really like you, and you know that, but what the f*** are you doing?\u201d Trump said, according to Fauci\u2019s diary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump complained that Fauci was \u201cconstantly\u201d dropping \u201cbombs\u201d on him and said people inside and outside the White House wanted him fired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI like you, but so many people, not only in the White House, but throughout the country, hate you because of what you are doing,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump then turned to Biden, whom he disparaged as \u201cso f***ing stupid,\u201d and predicted he would defeat him in a landslide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are 10 times smarter than he is,\u201d Trump told Fauci. \u201cI am going to kick his f***ng a** in this election. I will win by a landslide.
