The show stars David Morrissey, a classically trained actor who knows how to fill small screens. It produces half a dozen \u201caha!\u201d occasions, then revokes each one on the way to a logical conclusion. Most importantly, it exits the stage before we\u2019ve grown sick of it. Hand it to the Brits: They\u2019ve made in six episodes a series we greedy Americans would have stretched to 10. <\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-1\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-1\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-15\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Morrissey plays Michael Polly, an <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/england\/\">English<\/a> headmaster who falls under suspicion after the disappearance of his wife, Sarah. As taciturn as <em>Jane Eyre<\/em>\u2019s Mr. Rochester, Michael is seemingly incapable of rising to the emotional moment, insisting, for example, that he is still the man to coach the school\u2019s rugby squad even as Sarah\u2019s body turns up in a nearby woods. Attempting to fathom this coldness is Detective Sergeant Annie Cassidy (Eve Myles), an officer as empathetic as Michael is aloof. Quietly appalled by her suspect\u2019s lack of feeling, Annie sets in motion an investigative ordeal that makes little distinction between Michael\u2019s actual innocence or guilt. <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elements of this process will seem bizarre to American viewers. Initially, the lead detective on the case, Annie is soon reassigned as the Pollys\u2019 \u201cfamily liaison officer,\u201d a role that sees her all but move in with Michael and his grown daughter, Alana (Emma Appleton). The idea, one supposes, is that an on-the-scene police representative can answer questions as they arise and give comfort to the victim\u2019s family. Yet Michael is himself suspected of the murder. Whereas <em>Gone<\/em>\u2019s writers presumably see Annie\u2019s domestic omnipresence as an occasion for their main characters to spar, I see a gross violation of the common-law right to a solicitor during police questioning, to say nothing of our own beloved Fifth Amendment. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\">David Morrissey in \u201cGone.\u201d (James Pardon\/ITV)<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; data-large-file=&#8221;https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2026\/08\/localimages\/LA.TV_.080526.jpg?w=696&#8243; height=&#8221;658&#8243; width=&#8221;1024&#8243; &#8220;https:><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">David Morrissey in \u201cGone.\u201d (James Pardon\/ITV)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But never mind. <em>Gone<\/em> invites viewers to be amateur psychologists, not amateur scholars of Anglosphere constitutions. To put it another way, why Michael doesn\u2019t send Annie packing at once is not a legal question but one having to do with our protagonist\u2019s complicated needs. Rather than shutting the detective out, Michael opens up to her, revealing the shattered (and possibly guilty) man beneath the exterior of stone. All the while, Alana watches in dismay. Did her father kill her mother? Michael won\u2019t say \u201cyes,\u201d but neither \u2014 quite \u2014 will he deliver a firm \u201cno.\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Gone<\/em> dips its toes in \u201ctoxic masculinity\u201d waters without wading up to its chin. To be sure, the imposing Michael is of a type hardly allowed to exist anymore, but the show reserves just as much scrutiny for its overly feminized police force, a henhouse of gossip and bureaucratic wrangling. Annie, too, gets a turn beneath the microscope of showrunner George Kay (<em>Lupin<\/em>, <em>Hijack<\/em>), an examination that produces a useful counterpoint to other programs\u2019 vogue misandrist progressivism. Consider, for example, the detective\u2019s inability to resist the advances of her louche ex-husband (Peter McDonald). Men may be pigs, the series seems to be saying, but women are still lining up to fill the trough. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kay is right, of course, to make his characters individuals rather than stock figures in a leftist morality play. Other details of the show\u2019s construction are equally distinctive, not least production designer Anna Higginson\u2019s gorgeous interiors and cinematographer Alvaro Gutierrez\u2019s soaring drone shots of Bristol\u2019s Clifton Suspension Bridge. Yet the series is ultimately made by its pacing and cast. About the former, suffice it to say that I was never bored \u2014 no small thing for a TV critic in the age of streaming bloat. As for the latter, the assembled actors uniformly succeed, with special honors for Appleton (<em>Traitors<\/em>) as a young woman who doesn\u2019t know whether to mourn one parent or both. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/premium\/4656512\/review-apple-tv-lucky\/\">ANYA-TAYLOR JOY SHINES IN CRIME SERIES \u2018LUCKY\u2019 <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The star, however, is clearly Morrissey, a performer perhaps best known to American audiences for playing the governor in seasons three and four of <em>The Walking Dead<\/em>. A 40-year veteran of stage and screen, the Englishman so perfectly embodies the stern head of a prestigious \u201cpublic\u201d school that one expects him to get an offer to run such an institution in real life. (Does Eton need a man?) But there is rawness to his performance, too. Only an actor of exceptional technical ability could have pulled off both sides of so contradictory a character. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Gone<\/em> has been overpraised in some quarters, its many virtues notwithstanding. Contra the <em>Guardian<\/em>, the series is not \u201cthe most engrossing drama we\u2019ll see this year\u201d but a well-made, agenda-free exercise in genre storytelling. That it has turned so many heads mostly indicates how starved we all are for simple quality. So how about it, streaming giants? There\u2019s a lesson here.
