The border surge follows a recent Spanish Supreme Court ruling that prohibits the immediate return of sea-arriving migrants without due process, even though this does not apply to land crossings. The spike in crossings has prompted CeutaS regional authorities to request Madrid declare a state of emergency and deploy the military to secure the border. Video footage shows large migratory groups, mainly Moroccans, some shouting patriotic slogans, with many attempting to enter ceuta, while others seek to return to Morocco. The reasons behind the surge remain unclear, but increased arrivals have overwhelmed local facilities. Spain’s Prime Minister is expected to visit Ceuta to assess the situation. This border crisis has wider implications, including discussions in Italy about border security, and follows growing migration flows into Europe, often involving dangerous sea crossings from Morocco.

CEUTA, Spain (AP) — At least 18 migrants died trying to reach the Spanish territory of Ceuta after thousands of people breached the frontier with Morocco and poured into the tiny Spanish territory.

The border crisis boiled over Thursday and overnight.
