State Rep. Donavan McKinney, a socialist backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and supported by several congressional Black caucus (CBC) members, is challenging incumbent rep. Shri Thanedar. McKinney has received endorsements from prominent Democrats like Ilhan Omar,Lateefah Simon,Ayanna Pressley, and former CBC Chairman Steven Horsford, who praised his fight for working families. The race is pivotal, as black support could influence the outcome, though polls suggest black voters are less inclined toward socialism compared to white voters. Thanedar, a former DSA member who distanced himself from the organization after a recent incident, holds significant resources and support from party leadership but is viewed as vulnerable. The district is majority-black and historically has always elected Black representatives.Despite a substantial financial advantage for Thanedar, McKinney’s campaign is seen as competitive, reflecting tensions within the Democratic Party over socialism and race. The primary is scheduled for August 4, with the district considered safely Democratic overall.

A primary race in Detroit could be a barometer of whether black voters are energized by the surge of socialism overtaking the Democratic Party this cycle.

State Rep.
