The law, which takes effect soon, prohibits apps and websites from creating fake, sexualized images of people without consent and is the first of its kind in the U.S. xAI argues that the law is overly broad, criminalizing protected speech such as depictions of individuals in swimsuits or shirts and holding companies liable even when images have artistic or educational value. The company believes the law could result in massive fines and unfair liability, especially as xAI already restricts user creation of non-consensual nude images. There is no \u201csafe harbor\u201d provision for companies, making AI providers liable regardless of policies they already have in place prohibiting users from using the tool for nudification, Musk\u2019s company added, noting that xAI and other providers will be subjected to a penalty of $500,000 per violation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The law is set to take effect this weekend after the Minnesota House passed the bill 132-1 and the Minnesota Senate 65-0 during the 2026 legislative session. Proponents, led by Democratic state Sen.
